Furaha Community Foundation We believe that education is the key to breaking endemic poverty in our slums. Moving out of the slum is a far-fetched dream for most of them.

~Creating opportunities for children and families to thrive with joy, dignity, and resilience through education, healthcare, and empowerment~ Children living in the slum have minimal options in life because they lack quality education. They grow up in the slum, marry in the slum, and bear children who, in most cases, continue this vicious cycle of poverty. Our strategy emphasizes giving education and food to orphans and vulnerable children as a starting point, then empowering their guardians through micro-business loans, health care intervention for those who are HIV positive, and skills training that gives them the financial ability and muscle to take better care of their children, both within our program and their other siblings at home. We start with the child, the family, and finally, the whole community. We SERVE the community by providing the resources and the programs below. SERVE to us means MUCH more; Sustainability, Educating, Replicating, Volunteerism, and Empowerment of the Needy and Vulnerable Children and their guardians.

On August 20th, Mathare celebrated a major milestone. 236 entrepreneurs graduated from Furaha Street Business School as part of the Assisted Global Catalyst Partners (AGCP) project.

The band led us into the street, playing drums, singing, dancing. Shopkeepers stepped away from their counters to clap. Children ran alongside the procession. Traffic paused to let us pass.

Then came the certificates โ€” all 236 of them. Each certificate represents six training modules, weeks of practice, and a business built from an idea and sheer determination.

Weโ€™re still looking through the photos. In every shot, one thing is clear: pride.

To every graduate: you did the work. The business is yours. Go and grow it.

To AGCP and the Street Business School team: thank you for supporting our community.

To Huruma: thank you for showing up for your neighbors.

Some moments make you stop, look back, and say: "Thank You, God." ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ

Today is one of those moments.

Peter and Snidah are married. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ’

Both came through Furaha as children. We watched them learn. We watched them grow. We watched them finish college and come back to serve the very community that raised them, standing in front of the same children they once were.

Today, two Furaha stories became one.

Their love says something about this work. Furaha is not only about education. Furaha is about family. About walking with a child long enough to see them become who God created them to be. About planting seeds and, years later, standing amazed at the harvest.

To every teacher, mentor, staff member, friend, supporter, family and church community who prayed for them, guided them and believed in them: thank you. This moment belongs to you too.

Peter and Snidah, we celebrate you with grateful hearts. May God guide your home, strengthen your love, and use your marriage to keep blessing others.

The Furaha story continues. Today, love is part of the story. โค๏ธ

Today, we celebrate 13 of our students from the 2025 class as they join university this month.

They sat for their exams, earned their places, and now walk through gates that once seemed so far away.

Furaha covers the full tuition for every student in our program who qualifies for admission to a local university. These 13 join 99 students who have gone before them. Nine of our scholars will graduate from university this year.

To our students: go and become who you want to be. Your community and families are already proud of you.

To our supporters, partners, and donors: you made this possible, every fee paid, every mentorship hour, every prayer. Thank you.

Ten thousand, one hundred and three pairs of shoes.

Furaha Community Foundation and Because International have distributed 10,103 pairs of The Shoe That Grows across 32 APBET schools in Mathare. Five of Mathare's six wards are now covered.

Here is what the figures look like ward by ward:

Ngei: 14 schools plus a community issuance, 5,488 pairs
Hospital: 4 schools, 1,674 pairs
Mlango Kubwa: 5 schools, 1,502 pairs
Huruma: 6 schools, 740 pairs
Mabatini: 3 schools, 699 pairs

Why this shoe. It expands by five sizes and lasts for years, so one pair carries a child through several school years rather than just one term. It is manufactured in Mombasa, protecting Kenyan children and supporting Kenyan jobs in the same supply chain.

Why it matters here, APBET schools serve the children the formal system leaves out. Families pay what they have. School shoes sit far down the list behind food and rent. Walking barefoot through Mathare means cuts and infections, and a sick child stays home.

In May, Harliet and Japheth from Because International stood with our team at the schools and handed out shoes themselves. Partnership looks like that.

Our thanks to the head teachers who collected every size, to UASA-Kenya under Secretary General Christopher Barassa, to the Furaha distribution team, and to Because International.

Kiamaiko ward remains. So do the children admitted since our last count. We are not finished.

Partnerships open doors. Communities create lasting change.

We're thankful to Street Business School for recognizing Furaha Community Foundation as one of its implementing partners in Kenya.

Through the Street Business School (SBS) entrepreneurship program, we're working with women in our communities to build confidence, improve business skills, and develop sustainable income sources that uplift entire families.

At Furaha, we understand that when a mother is financially empowered, children stay in school, families become more resilient, and communities flourish. That's why we're proud to include economic empowerment as part of our comprehensive approach to breaking the cycle of poverty.

Today was more than a groundbreaking ceremony.

It was a reminder of how far partnership, faith, and community can take us.

For years, our school kitchen has faithfully served hundreds of meals every single day using firewood. Through smoke, rain, long hours, and limited space, our kitchen team has continued showing up with love and dedication for our children.

Today, we officially begin a new chapter.

Together with our friends and partners from Redeemer's Church, we broke ground for the construction of a new LPG-powered kitchen that will create a cleaner, safer, healthier, and more efficient cooking environment for both our students and staff.

Heavy rains delayed the start for months, but standing together today, watching the site being cleared and surrounded by students, teachers, staff, and community leaders, made the wait worth it.

This is not just about upgrading a kitchen.
It is about dignity.
It is about health.
It is about creating better spaces for the people who serve and care for children every day.

To Redeemer's Church, thank you for believing in this vision and walking this journey with us. Your partnership continues to create meaningful change in the lives of children and families in Huruma.

We cannot wait to see the first meal prepared in this new space. โค๏ธ

We are deeply grateful to our partners, friends, churches, and funders who journeyed from afar to be with us at Furaha. Your presence in our Primary School, Junior Secondary, and High School celebrations meant more than words can express.

You didnโ€™t just visit. You celebrated every milestone with us. You witnessed our students showcase their talents, confidence, laughter, and gratitude. You shared in the joy of a community rising.
