📘 We Have Launched!

Today, NIMD Kenya, under the Women and Youth in Democracy (WYDE) Civic Engagement programme, officially launched the Country Action Plan on Youth Political Participation (2025–2030) alongside the East Africa Regional Roadmap for Youth in Politics.

These two landmark publications provide a practical framework for strengthening youth political participation by promoting civic knowledge, advancing youth-inclusive legal and policy reforms, improving access to political financing, and fostering safe, inclusive, and non-violent political spaces across Kenya and the wider East African region.

Developed through a collaborative process involving young leaders and key stakeholders from Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Somaliland, the reports reflect a shared commitment to ensuring that young people are not only represented in political processes but are empowered to shape democratic governance.

The East Africa Regional Roadmap on Youth Political Participation did not begin as a policy document. It began as a conference.
From 4–6 August 2025, the WYDE East Africa Regional Conference in Malindi, Kenya convened youth delegates and democracy academy alumni from Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Somaliland. The conference demonstrated that when young people are provided with platforms, skills, trust, and networks, they do more than participate — they lead.
That momentum shaped a five-year regional roadmap and, now, Kenya's own Country Action Plan — launching 29 July in Nairobi.

Kenya is one of the youngest nations on earth.
🔢 ~80% of the population is under 35.
🔢 Those aged 18–35 make up about 36% of the total population.
Yet young people remain deeply underrepresented in Parliament, county assemblies, and political parties.

On 29 July 2026, in Nairobi, the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) Kenya will launch the Kenya Country Action Plan on Youth Political Participation (2025–2030), operationalizing the East Africa Regional Roadmap on Youth Political Participation developed by youth delegates from Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Somaliland at the WYDE Regional Conference in Malindi.
The Country Action Plan translates regional commitments into concrete, measurable actions for Kenya — strengthening civic knowledge, promoting youth-inclusive legal frameworks, improving access to political financing, and fostering safe, accountable political spaces.

The Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) paid a courtesy call on the Garissa County Assembly ahead of the inaugural Intergenerational Dialogue in the County bringing together youth and duty bearers in Garissa County.

The delegation was received by Speaker Hon. Abdi Idle Gure and Clerk CHRP Mohamud Abdi Santur, where discussions focused on strengthening youth participation, inclusive governance, and creating meaningful spaces for engagement between citizens and leaders.

The upcoming dialogue will provide an opportunity for young people to identify key issues affecting them and engage directly with duty bearers on practical solutions, accountability, and democratic participation.

NIMD appreciates the support and commitment of the Garissa County Assembly in advancing inclusive democratic governance and fostering constructive engagement between youth and decision makers.

NIMD Kenya, in partnership with the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties ORPPKenya , convened a Duty Bearers Readiness Reflection Forum to assess institutional preparedness in addressing Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) and Online Violence Against Women in Politics (OVAWP). The forum brought together political parties, regulatory agencies, civil society organizations, technology experts, and other key stakeholders to strengthen collective action against digital harms in Kenya's electoral processes.
Through interactive panel discussions and stakeholder engagements, participants examined:
• The readiness of political parties to prevent and respond to online violence through stronger compliance and disciplinary frameworks.
• The role of digital platforms, content moderation systems, and rapid-response mechanisms in protecting women candidates and political actors.
• The effectiveness of state regulatory and enforcement institutions in addressing cyber harassment, data privacy violations, and other forms of online abuse.
• Pathways for developing a coordinated 2027 Electoral Rapid Response Framework and a Joint Institutional Communiqué on Digital Safety.
As Kenya prepares for the 2027 General Election, safeguarding digital spaces is critical to ensuring inclusive, safe, and meaningful political participation for women, youth, and all citizens. The discussions reaffirmed the need for stronger collaboration among duty bearers to prevent online violence from undermining democratic engagement.
