Our Funding
GSEP require funding to conduct research, organise events, publish reports, and support their staff and operations. The main sources of funding include:-
1. Government Funding
National, regional, or local governments may provide grants or contracts.
Think tanks may conduct research on public policy issues on behalf of government agencies.
Some government-funded think tanks operate as public institutions.
2. Private Foundations
Charitable foundations often support research on issues such as education, health, governance, climate change, and international development.
Examples include foundations established by philanthropists or corporations.
3. Corporate Donations
Businesses may provide financial support for research projects related to their industry or areas of interest.
Companies may sponsor conferences, publications, or policy studies.
4. Individual Donations
Wealthy individuals and members of the public may contribute funds to support a think tank's mission and activities.
Some think tanks run membership or donor programmes.
5. Research Grants
Universities, international organisations, and development agencies may award research grants for specific projects.
These grants are usually competitive and based on the quality of research proposals.
6. International Organisations
Organisations such as the United Nations (UN), World Bank, African Development Bank (AfDB), and regional bodies may fund policy research and development initiatives.
7. Consultancy and Contract Research
Think tanks often generate income by providing:
Policy analysis
Programme evaluations
Advisory services
Training and capacity-building programmes.
8. Endowments and Investments
Some established think tanks maintain investment funds (endowments).
Income generated from these investments helps support their operations over the long term.
Importance of Funding Transparency
Because funding can influence research agendas, as a reputable think tank, GSEP: -
Discloses its funding sources.
Follow ethical and professional standards.
Maintain independence and credibility.
Avoid conflicts of interest where possible.
Challenges of Think Tank Funding
Dependence on a small number of donors.
Risk of perceived political or commercial influence.
Competition for grants and donations.
Balancing financial sustainability with research independence.
In the Context of Foreign Affairs and International Relations
GSEP receive support from:-
Governments
International organisations
Development partners
Foundations
Private sector donors.
This funding enables GSEP to conduct research on global issues, diplomacy, peace and security, trade, regional integration, climate policy, and global governance.
GSEP credibility depends heavily on transparency, accountability, and maintaining independence in their research.
