On October, 23, 2023, we got a desperate call from a lady in Nyeri whose life had taken a different twist after a failed marriage. She mentioned she had 4 children whom she was planning to do away with due to how tough life had become. We did our due diligence using our volunteers on the ground, and after ascertaining the authenticity of her case, we left for Nyeri. The only physical detail we had was the name of the school her children used to go to. Lucky enough, one our volunteers' rural home was in Nyeri, and with her help, we got to the school and eventually the village, a small humble set up of wooden houses dotting the silent neighborhood.
The home had two elderly people, and four small children whom we presumed belonged to the lady that had reached out. As usual, we identified ourselves to the elders, prayed and shared our reason for visiting, in Kikuyu language ofcourse as the elders were not familiar with the Swahili language. Peris, seated in blue jeans, helped us do the talking in her mother tongue.
Broken, hungry and painfully, the old lady narrated the story of her family, how things had gone from normal, to bad to the very worst. The lady in question was her grand daughter, and the elderly gentleman you see in the photos her son. The four children, as we had earlier presumed, were her great grandchildren from the lady that had contacted us.
Her grand daughter had earlier on met a guy whom they got married but left after about 6yrs in the marriage after the guy turned violent and abusive to the kids, she left the marriage and brought the children to her grandmother, only to leave to an unknown town to find something to do. Days went, months came and things weren't looking up. The children had to drop out of school.
Long story short, we donated the items we had bought, used the money we had contributed to settle the pending bills they had and paid the school fees for the children for the next coming year.
We came back to Nairobi broken by how life can get so unfair to some people, but with a story of hope and restoration that motivated us to keep supporting the vulnerable in society.
