Piloten met een nieuwe missie

Vanuit Nederland ligt de hele wereld binnen handbereik. Op de fiets naar de winkel, met de auto naar familie of met het vliegtuig op vakantie. Maar voor velen in andere delen van de wereld is de dagelijkse realiteit heel anders. Zij hebben niets van dat alles en leven geïsoleerd, ver van de bewoonde wereld. Wij zijn Joost de Wit en Ruth de Wit - van der Ploeg. Samen met onze kinderen Naud (2014) en Annemijn (2016) wonen we in Leiden. Al van kinds af aan wilden we allebei piloot worden. Joost is gezagvoerder Boeing 737 en Ruth is co-piloot Boeing 777. We hebben elkaar in 2008 tijdens het werk ontmoet, nadat we waren ingedeeld om samen een week te vliegen. Begin 2021 kwamen we in contact met MAF. Sindsdien is er bij ons een snel groeiend verlangen ontstaan om onze talenten en ervaring in te zetten voor een nieuwe missie: het bereiken van onbereikbare naasten. We geloven dat ieder mens in deze wereld God’s geliefde kind is. Ongeacht kleur, achtergrond, overtuiging of welke vorm van onderscheid dan ook. Zijn allesomvattende liefde geeft ons deze nieuwe missie: we willen het onbereikbare bereikbaar maken. We willen compassie vleugels geven. Helpt u mee?

MAF pilot Joost: "I’m so grateful I could bring baby Alisha and her mother to Nairobi in just under 2 hours, instead of a 2-day journey!"

Alisha urgently needed medical care at Kijabe Hospital. Doctors discovered she had been receiving the wrong medication. She’s now on the correct treatment, and an infection is also being treated.

“Your help may have saved her life, as we had no other trip to Kijabe scheduled,” said Mick Alley, founder of Samburu Missions Kenya.

This is what MAF does: connecting remote communities to life-saving care when every minute counts.

What if you're landing on the slope of a hill? Are you going to land upslope or downslope? Landing upslope will make your landing roll shorter. But what if you have a strong and turbulent tailwind during that landing?

During a low pass we assess all conditions before making a decision: slope, wind, temperature (what's my maximum go around torque?), altimeter setting, surface condition, obstacles, go-around options and committal point.

Landing a MAF plane on a desert airstrip in Northern Kenya requires focus and precision. On this airstrip we are committed to land after about 200 metres, due to upsloping terrain. We say this out loud at the commit point, which we briefed before landing.
