From abandoned clay pits to thriving fish ponds, this is what community-led restoration looks like.
In Rukungiri, Uganda, SBE AquaFarm is transforming degraded clay mining pits into productive aquaculture ecosystems that support local livelihoods, restore wetlands, and strengthen food security for families across the community.
Founded by Syliah Kagiiga, a geoscientist and restoration leader, SBE AquaFarm is proving that damaged landscapes can become sources of life again. What was once abandoned land and dangerous stagnant pits is now being rebuilt into sustainable fish ponds, native tree corridors, and community-centered economic opportunities.
