A Triumph of Resilience

Congratulations to Clifford Andrew Okal, Chairperson of the Vitiligo Society of Kenya (VISOKE), on being recognized among the Top 3 Most Resilient Teachers in Elgeyo Marakwet County, 2026.

Beyond the classroom, Clifford has weathered the storms and challenges of living with vitiligo—yet he has continued to teach, lead, inspire and serve others with courage and determination.

This recognition is more than an award; it is a reminder that resilience can turn personal challenges into a source of strength and purpose.

Congratulations, Chairperson. Your journey inspires us all.

When the Future Becomes a Mirage
Vitiligo is not simply a change in skin colour. For many people, it can affect daily life, relationships, work, social participation and emotional wellbeing.
A global VALIANT study involving 3,541 adults from 17 countries found that 46% reported a burden from managing vitiligo every day. The burden was particularly pronounced among people with darker skin types, facial involvement and more extensive disease.

Yet the research journey is far from complete.
We still need better answers:
Why does vitiligo develop? Why does it progress differently between individuals? Which treatments work best for whom? How can relapse be prevented? And how can care become more accessible across different populations and settings?
Research is what turns uncertainty into evidence—and evidence into better care.
The path in this image may look uncertain, but the message is clear:
Without sustained investment in research, the future of vitiligo care risks remaining a mirage.

October: A New Month, Same Courage
October begins with a simple reminder: we don't have to wait for life to become perfect before we choose to live fully.
This smile, this face, and these visible vitiligo patches tell a story that goes beyond skin. They speak of confidence, community, and the freedom to be seen without having to explain yourself.
As we step into a new month, may October be a month of fewer assumptions, greater understanding, and more room for people to show up exactly as they are.
New month. New possibilities. Same beautiful humanity.

Beyond the Skin: Economic Empowerment as Part of Vitiligo Care
Vitiligo is more than a visible change in skin pigmentation—it can become a social and economic barrier when stigma influences how people are treated in schools, workplaces and communities. Evidence from Africa and other high-stigma settings documents experiences of social exclusion and employment discrimination, including difficulties securing or retaining employment.

For young women, the intersection of gender, appearance-based stigma and economic vulnerability can make the playing field even less level. Research has linked employment difficulties among women with skin diseases to poorer psychosocial outcomes, while economic resources can influence access to care and overall quality of life.

Economic empowerment must therefore be part of the vitiligo conversation. Skills development, entrepreneurship, access to decent work, inclusive recruitment and protection from appearance-based discrimination can help ensure that a person's skin does not determine their economic opportunities.
**Vitiligo should never shrink a person's livelihood, ambition or future. Equal skin. Equal dignity. Equal opportunity.**

Vitiligo is no longer waiting to be seen.
It is asking to be understood — in our homes, our schools, our workplaces, our clinics, and our communities.
Visibility starts the conversation. Inclusion keeps it going.

Beauty wears many shades,
and vitiligo adds its own—
not a flaw to hide,
but a story written on the skin.

OUR SKIN. OUR HERITAGE. OUR STRENGTH. 🇰🇪

From the red shuka to the colours of our beads, Kenya carries a heritage built on strength, identity and resilience.

And our skin tells its own story.

Vitiligo does not take away our beauty, our culture, or our place in society.

Different shades. One Kenya.
From stigma to strength.
