“I told my guide I don’t want anything easy. Boy did I get it harder.”
Our co-founder Kamawera recently summited Mount Kilimanjaro, Uhuru Peak - 5,895m, Africa’s highest point. Two hours of unbroken rain on day one alone, and that was the easy part.
It’s a fitting mirror of what we see in the founders we work with, progress rarely moves in a straight line. It looks like adjusting to conditions you didn’t plan for, and choosing to keep going anyway.

Back in April, we had the opportunity to sit down with and for a conversation about the vision, growth, and future of SHIELD. 🚀

As a youth-centered organization, moments like these matter deeply to us — not just because of who is in the room, but because of what the conversations represent: belief in young people, belief in community-driven impact, and belief in building sustainable solutions for the future.

We shared the mission behind SHIELD, the work we are doing around youth empowerment and leadership development, and the kind of long-term impact we hope to create across communities.

We are grateful for the time, insight, and encouragement shared during the meeting, and excited about the possibilities that emerge when vision, leadership, and community come together.
