Equality isn’t real if control isn’t.

When Ruth Bader Ginsburg said this, she was defining the foundation, not the surface.

That was the system.

Rights that appear equal, while the most personal decisions remain restricted or controlled.

The barrier is autonomy.

Without the ability to decide whether or not to have a child, every other opportunity is affected.

The risk is illusion.

A version of equality that exists on paper, but not in lived reality.

She rejected that.

Dignity isn’t symbolic, it’s practical, it depends on control over your own life.

The struggle is ongoing.

Policies, debates, and systems still shaping access.

That’s the breakthrough.

Understanding that reproductive choice isn’t separate from equality, it defines it.

That’s the legacy.

Not just a legal argument, but a structural truth.

And it leaves a sharper question.

If the most personal decision isn’t yours to make, what does equality actually mean?

Another year and it feels ever more important to beat the drum for International Women's Day/Week to remind us to keep fighting for gender equality for a safer, more prosperous and happier world, and to find better ways to bring more brilliant women into leadership spaces at every level for rights, justice and healthier societies. Whilst indeed, as UN Women highlight, "progress has been made — and it matters. Today, 87% of countries have laws against domestic violence, and more than 40 nations have strengthened constitutional protections for women and girls in the past decade. ...
At the same time, the world is witnessing troubling setbacks. In some places, hard-won rights are being rolled back, while new forms of violence — such as digital abuse — are increasing. ...R**e continues to be used as a weapon of war, with reported cases of sexual violence rising by 87% in just two years. When justice systems fail women and girls, the consequences go far beyond individual cases: trust in institutions erodes and the rule of law itself is weakened. "
