Across East Africa, mothers continue to nurture families and communities despite facing immense challenges from limited healthcare access to poverty and inequality.

This Mother’s Day, we honour not only mothers, but also the changemakers working every day to ensure women are seen, supported, protected, and given the opportunity to thrive.

To all mothers, thank you for your strength, resilience, and love.

What happens when renewable energy innovation meets the resilience of smallholder farmers across East Africa?

Between 6th and 7th May 2026, Ashoka East Africa, with support from Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and in partnership with E4Impact Foundation, successfully hosted the first two workshops of Phase 2 of the Towards Improving Livelihoods for Smallholder Farmers in East Africa program.

The workshops brought together 22 innovators from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda who are developing distributed renewable energy solutions to strengthen agricultural value chains and improve productivity, resilience, and livelihoods for smallholder farmers.

Over the two days, participants engaged in rich conversations and practical learning sessions on social entrepreneurship, innovation, systems thinking, and strategy development, setting the foundation for a six-month journey focused on mentorship, ecosystem engagement, partnerships, and scale readiness.

We are inspired by the passion, collaboration, and commitment demonstrated by the innovators and ecosystem actors who joined us during these sessions. Together, we are building stronger pathways for sustainable agriculture, renewable energy adoption, and long-term impact across East Africa.

Stay tuned as we continue spotlighting the innovators and solutions shaping this journey.

A special thanks to David Cheboryot, Ruth Soi, Sarah Machio, Gideon Gachoki, Njeri Kamau Justin Kasia, Joy Mwania, & Wanjugu Magdalene

Last Thursday, we brought the Ashoka Changemaker Baraza Ye! Chapter Edition to a meaningful close with our final Meet & Greet in Nairobi.

Facilitated by Advocate Grace Waswa, Founder of Africa, the session provided valuable insights on “Legal and Regulatory Aspects of Building an Enterprise/Organisation/Project and an Introduction to Sustainability Frameworks.”

Participants gained practical knowledge on business registration, compliance, and ESG frameworks. Important tools to strengthen their ventures.

We are deeply grateful to every young changemaker who actively participated throughout this six-month journey. Thank you for your commitment, openness, curiosity, and consistent engagement from November to April. Your energy, stories, and dedication made this Baraza truly special and inspiring.

This may be the end of the series, but we are confident that the impact you will create is just beginning. We are proud of you all.

A heartfelt thank you to Eliud Luutsa, Ruth Soi, Bryan Wanyama and the entire ITC Ye Community for making this series impactful.

We are proud to officially launch Phase 2 of the Towards Improving Livelihoods of Smallholder Farmers in East Africa Program in partnership with E4Impact Foundation

Over the next six months, these changemakers will receive expert training, personalised mentorship, and ecosystem support to scale solutions that improve productivity, resilience, and incomes for thousands of farmers, transforming smallholder farming and their livelihoods in the region.

The Ashoka Changemaker Baraza Ye! Chapter Edition, an initiative by Ashoka East Africa and the ITC Ye Community, enables young Kenyan entrepreneurs to build sustainable, climate-smart ventures through connection, learning, and collaboration.

Last Friday in Nairobi, young changemakers came together for a dynamic session on “The Power of Collaboration and Networks in Scaling Youth Ventures.”

We were honoured to host Vincent Muhoro, Founder of Dunia Bora, who shared his inspiring journey of transforming cactus into food, fashion, and energy. His message was clear: bold ideas grow stronger through the right partnerships and community.

From honest conversations to meaningful connections, the session was a powerful reminder that entrepreneurship thrives together.
