A Milestone Moment for Refugee Women in Dadaab
Sabrin Darkenely Women Group in IFO2, Dadaab refugee camp marked a powerful step forward.
CARE Kenya's Country Director, Getrude Misango, officially handed over 3 Water ATMs and 1 Reverse Osmosis water purification to Sabrin Darkenely Women Group in IFO2, Dadaab refugee camp undertaking women water entrepreneurship under "From Camp to Green Cities program's.
These Water ATMs, paired with the water purifier, will serve 10,000 households; translating to bringing clean, purified drinking water to approximately 80,000 refugees and host community households, IFO2 being an integrated camp with both refugees and host communities.
But this is more than infrastructure; it is a statement that refugee women are capable entrepreneurs, leaders, and drivers of change.
The handover was witnessed by the CARE Kenya Dadaab team and key stakeholders such as the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency Kenya and County Government representatives, who applauded the initiative and called on CARE Kenya to upscale such opportunities to more women across the camps.
The ‘From Camps to Green Cities Program’, generously supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, is piloting refugee- led innovative financing model in water, food, and energy.
The program will help position CARE Kenya as one of the organizations supporting the national government in realising the Shirika plan that aims to transform Dadaab from just a camp into a thriving, self-reliant urban community.
