Trans Refugee Alliance Kenya (TRAK) is a trans men–led, grassroots refugee initiative established to respond to the urgent and unmet needs of trans men refugees and asylum seekers living in Kenya. TRAK exists to fill a critical gap in protection, shelter, and gender-affirming services for trans men who have been forcibly displaced due to persecution, criminalization, and violence based on gender identity and expression. While Kenya hosts a growing population of transgender refugees from Uganda and other African countries, there are currently no trans men–specific transitional homes in the country. Most available safe spaces are mixed-gender shelters that, despite good intentions, often fail to adequately meet the safety, privacy, and gender-affirming needs of trans men. As a result, many trans men refugees remain homeless, couch-surfing, exposed to violence, or forced into unsafe survival strategies.
TRAK was formed by and for trans men refugees to create a model of care that is affirming, protective, and rooted in lived experience.

Background.
Over the past few years, increasing anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, community hostility, and state-sanctioned violence particularly in Uganda have forced many transgender individuals to flee to Kenya in search of safety. Trans men refugees face layered vulnerabilities including:
Homelessness and unsafe housing
Discrimination within mixed-gender shelters
Lack of access to gender-affirming healthcare
Economic exclusion and unemployment
Mental health distress, trauma, and isolation.
Despite the presence of general refugee services and LGBTQ+ safe spaces, trans men remain largely invisible within humanitarian response frameworks. Mixed shelters often lack understanding of trans masculine identities, leading to misgendering, harassment, and unsafe living conditions. Additionally, access to hormones, binders, trans-competent healthcare providers, and referral pathways remains extremely limited or unaffordable for refugee population.
