The Environmental Education and Training Unit (EETU) operates under the Cross-Cutting Issues Branch of the Division of Environmental Policy Implementation (DEPI) at the UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. As a unit of UNEP, EETU is an essential component to the fulfillment of UNEP’s mission: “To provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, an
d enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.”
Leadership and partnership
EETU develops and strengthens environmental education and training initiatives so that they are relevant to all institutions, governments, segments and age groups. The unit also collaborates with partners such as governments, regional and national environmental education and training centers, institutions of higher learning, international and local non-governmental organizations and the private sector. EETU’s regional focal points are located in the following five areas:
• Mexico City (Latin America and the Caribbean)
• Bangkok, Thailand (Asia and the Pacific)
• Nairobi (Africa)
• Geneva (Europe)
• Bahrain (West Asia region)

By developing understanding, skills and values amongst the citizens of the world, environmental education promotes attitudes and value systems that influence environmentally ethical behavior. EETU encourages people to become active and informed citizens who participate in the development of an ecologically sustainable and socially just society. EETU activities aim to improve the present quality of life without compromising that of future generations. Through these activities, EETU promotes an innovative, action oriented, and value-based education for sustainable development.
