Restore to me the joy of your salvation

In this article we are going to write a bit about Psalm 51, but not without first highlighting that this Psalm was written by King David from the depths of his heart and his sensibilities as a human being. From the first verse we see his soul emptied before God, speaking as a man who has been destroyed and who recognizes his sin and simply cries out for God’s mercy. David wrote this psalm after he had committed a series of sins and simply no longer felt comfortable without God.

What do we feel when we sin? Really many times when we sin we only think about what people will say, but have we thought about what God will say? When we sin our greatest concern, it should not be men but God, that God who looks at us from heaven who is offended by our actions.

And David at that time did not have men in first line for the terrible fault he had committed but he felt extremely alone without God because he understood that he had transgressed all types of Law.

David begins this chapter with the following verse:

Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
blot out my transgressions.

Psalm 51:1

The first thing is that we should never go to God justifying ourselves for what we know is wrong. Dear brother, before God there is no human justification, the only thing that justifies us is the precious blood of Christ on the cross but for this we must go before God with a totally repentant heart that recognizes its failure. Remember that God looks at the humble closely and the proud looks at him from afar.

But I want us to pay full attention to the following verse of this supplication of David:

Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

Psalm 51:12

It is good to point out that David had lost the joy of salvation, the joy of the Lord was no longer in him, and precisely because of this he had become involved in so many unpleasant acts. What I want to highlight with all this is that when we lose this joy we also get involved in things that are not pleasant the Lord and that is why, together with David, we should say: “Restore to me the joy of your salvation”.

If we have lost that joy we should ask God to relive that joy in us again, those moments where we only wanted to be in the house of God, those moments where the things of this world did not fill our eyes, where we only wanted to be close to the Lord and nothing else. If we have lost that joy this is the time to renew it before the Lord, to go in prayer and ask Him that we can no longer be without Him, that our souls are dejected and that without Him we can do nothing.

Take delight in the Lord

Sometimes we will have moments of affliction, but also moments of joy will come, which we have to take advantage of. Let us be faithful to the Lord and He will have mercy, and His joy will be eternal in each of our lives.

The joy of the Lord will bring to each person’s life peace, love, humility, patience, kindness, and a spirit of mercy. When the Lord comes into our lives everything is different, there is no sadness because our sadness becomes joy.

Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Psalm 37:4

God fulfills what He promises, but everything arrives in His time, because nobody gives orders to God, only He in His will and His infinite mercy gives us everything we need, but in due time.

It is good that in difficult moments we rejoice in Almighty God, be faithful, even if we have problems, that if the trials come, we be prepared so that we bow down before God and ask for strengths.

Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him and he will do this:

Psalm 37:5

Only God knows your ways, your thoughts, He guides you every day. God tells you where there is danger, where you can walk, where you can tread, only He can see the intentions of the evil one. Trust in Him and He will do, He has control of all things.

He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn,
your vindication like the noonday sun.

Psalm 37:6

God is a God of order, He does justice to His children, He fights for them, He alone is always there to help them, He is in our bad times, and He also helps us overcome the darkness in the name of the great and strong God.

Verses to help you control your anger

“because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.” James 1:20

The Bible tells us that we must manage our emotions and control our temper. Many of us, if we want to admit it, find it very difficult to control our temper, especially when we are angry about something that we dislike or do not find completely reasonable.

Anger is relative. We do not get angry with the same things, but we get angry when something unpleasant or painful happens to us. When we are offended or dismayed by something or someone, we get angry and sometimes we say or do something we regret.

Sometimes we do not even realize how we give ourselves to the anger we have. A friend at school makes fun of you and you do the same and you can even imagine doing violent things to them. A colleague at work does not do what you asked for and you respond by tearing off your tongue as if you are no longer a human being. Also in some marriage situations, if your spouse can not do something you asked for, you may end up hurting the person you promised to love and appreciate.

Uncontrolled anger is not a good thing. Proverbs 16:24 advises us the following:

Pleasant words are like a honeycomb,
Sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.

How to control our temperament
We should all learn to control our temperament. Controlling it does not mean repressing it and denying the pain or discomfort that we feel inside. It simply means training us to these annoyances without the need to do something that offends God. Yes, we can do that.

To help you control your temper, here are some verses from the Bible that you can meditate on and remember to apply to yourself when you are tempted to get angry:

26 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath,

27 nor give place to the devil.

28 Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.

29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.

30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.

32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

Ephesians 4:26-32

7 Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him;
Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,
Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.

8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath;
Do not fret—it only causes harm.

9 For evildoers shall be [a]cut off;
But those who wait on the Lord,
They shall inherit the earth.

Psalm 37:7-9

21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’

22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire.

Matthew 5:21-22

The power of the gospel

What is the gospel? The gospel message is “good news”. What is the good news? Without a doubt, despite the fact that this message has now been exchanged for other messages very distant from what the Gospel really is, it is a message of good news, and the good news is that Christ came and died on the cross, and rose again to save sinners.

The Word of God says in Romans 1: 16-17

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.

17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”

First of all, it is necessary to point out that this letter was not written to the Jews, it was to the Romans, to a people that was not called the people of God, however, the great apostle was taking them the news of salvation to that people, a people that was not Jewish. I assure you that they knew who the Apostle Paul was in other times, a man who was a great Pharisee who knew the law, instructed at the feet of the best teacher of his time.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel”. This expression has much to teach us, since Paul, who now believes in the Son of God, was perhaps mocked by the Pharisees and all the learned of the law. However, the apostle now says that he is not ashamed of his new life, of the message he is transmitting, Why? Because the gospel is the power of God, and he rejoices to be able to talk about the most important news that has ever reached humanity.

Why is this message the power of God? It is the power of God because it is the only message that can resurrect the spiritual dead, it is the only message that can change lives, it is the only message that can change the worst sinner, exactly because it is the power of God.

This message has transformed us and we are not ashamed of this good news, although the world mocks us, we say together with the apostle: “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God”

Praise for the mighty deeds of God

Psalm 66 is one of my favorite Psalms, due to the fact that it urges us to praise our God for its powerful works, and it is something we must do in our day to day, praise God for all the wonders He has done for us and all this starts from giving thanks for the air we breathe and most important: Christ died for our sins and has redeemed us. Is not this a sign that we should give glory to God?

Let us remember that one of the Hebrew customs was to remind all generations of the mighty works that God had done for the people of Israel, so that the following generations would never forget how majestic and good God has been. They taught their children the wonders of God. Sometimes we as parents fail in these things, we forget to teach our children all the good that God has done throughout the biblical history and in our lives alike.

In verse 6 of Psalm 66 David tells us about the wonderful deeds of God in the desert, when he brought out with a strong hand the people of Israel from Egypt:

He turned the sea into dry land,
they passed through the waters on foot—
come, let us rejoice in him.

Psalm 66:6

The verse number four is the axis of this entire chapter:

All the earth bows down to you;
they sing praise to you,
they sing the praises of your name.

This verse inspires us to give glory to God and at the same time teaches us the great purpose for which we have been created: to worship God. And today is a good day to say together with the psalmist David the end of this psalm: Blessed be God, Who has not turned away my prayer, Nor His mercy from me!

Humility lesson: The foot washer

A lesson of humility is what we found when Jesus washed the feet of His disciples, because He taught them that they had to do the same with their brothers, because if He, being the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, did it, what else does He leave us to us who are small before Him?.

Jesus was always speaking to the disciples, teaching them about being compassionate towards others, Jesus was doing all this because He would one day leave this earth. These teachings served for when His disciples walked all over the world preaching, teaching about the good news of salvation.

For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.

John 13:15

Jesus spoke to them and set the example so that none of them would forget to do this with their neighbors, and this so that they understood that, even if they considered themselves older or younger, they could make this gesture of humility.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.

John 13:16

Jesus sets an example about His Father, who is greater than Him and that those around Him, giving them to understand that, if He can do these things with us, what can we say about the Father who created us, who gave us life, that created all the things that are around us, and that His mercies are upon us every day, and that they are new day after day?.

If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.

John 13:17

Blessed is he who knows these things and puts them into practice, as the previous verse says. We hope that we can put these teachings of Jesus for the disciples into practice, showing humility with others

He does great things that we do not understand

A wonderful, powerful, majestic God who controls all things. He does things that we do not understand, but that someday we will can understand why the Lord did it that way.

I will give you an example of what people want and ask, they tell the Lord “I want a car or a house”. Actually it is not bad, the problem is that they ask, without patience and with exigency. He is the one who controls everything and therefore we should not give orders to God as if He were our servant, the good thing is to ask and wait because He does as He wants and when he wants.

God thundereth marvellously with his voice; great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend.

Job 37:5

God is good to each one of us, Job had such a great trial that he lost everything, but he did not deny the power of God, nor did reject him, but he adored His name and believed in Him as He went thhrough his great trial.

The works done by His hands demonstrate His power, nature and everything that was created by Him praises Him at all times, so we must cry out to the Lord, give glory only to Him.

For he saith to the snow, Be thou on the earth; likewise to the small rain, and to the great rain of his strength.

Job 37:6

Just as everything has been created by Him, He has authority over all things, and even nature obeys Him, because He is God.

He sealeth up the hand of every man; that all men may know his work.

Job 37:7

If we breathe it is because it has pleased Him, if we walk it is because He has mercy on us every day, because His words say that His mercies are new every day. For this fact let us give thanks to God and let us hope in Him, because He knows when and why He will continue to do things we do not understand.

His mercies are new every morning

Every morning when we open our eyes to the light of day, when we put our feet on the ground, each new dawn that God gives us, we must understand that it is not something we deserve, but because of His infinite mercy allows us to live another day and that it is a special reason to give glory to God regardless of the difficult time we are going through. And is that glorifying God is not something we can negotiate in our state of mind, our spirit should always be to worship God.

The people of God have always gone through moments of great bitterness, however, in all those moments God has never forgotten them, and in the same way, something that should serve as a great motivation is that God does not forget us in our difficult times and if today we get up from our beds once again, it is a great demonstration of God’s mercy.

The book of lamentations says:

22 It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

Lamentations 3:22-23

The author of the book of Lamentations knew very well that if they were alive it was because of the mercies of God and not because of their own strength. Do we understand that today? In us there is no strength to stand, but God sustains us each morning through His infinite love and great mercies.

The mercies of God are new every morning, they are not exhausted, they are eternal, they have no end, and those mercies are available to us and that is why we have to give glory and honor to our great Creator God.
