Partnerships for long-term water security in the Upper Tana🌱

For over a decade, Stanley has witnessed firsthand the transformation of his farmland and the surrounding landscape of Maragua Ridge. ⛰️

Through collaborative watershed restoration efforts built on Nature-based Solutions, he has seen degraded areas gradually recover — improving soil health, water availability, and overall productivity at farm level.🌱

From forests and farmlands, to the city. 💧

Today, we had the pleasure of hosting Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA) alongside The Nature Conservancy for a journey through the Upper Tana watershed, exploring the interconnected systems that sustain water security for millions.

Our day began at Gatare Forest, where, in partnership with the Kenya Forest Service and Gatare Community Forest Association, we are restoring degraded sites to strengthen forest cover and the health of this vital water tower.

At Ndakaini Dam, we saw the next link in the chain: water flowing from the upper catchment, stored, and distributed to the over 5 Million + residents of Nairobi and beyond.

We then visited farmers Godfrey and Nancy, whose adoption of sustainable land management practices is helping conserve soil and water at farm level—protecting the watershed from the ground up.

As one of the Water Fund’s longstanding partners, Coca-Cola system has invested in nature-based solutions in the Upper Tana for a decade through The Nature Conservancy. Today’s visit was a powerful reminder that water connects us all—and that safeguarding it requires action across the entire landscape.

Earlier today, we launched the Water Neutrality Project in partnership with Haleon, the global consumer healthcare company behind trusted brands including Panadol, Sensodyne, Aquafresh, Calpol and Eno. 💊

Through 2028, this partnership will support farmer training and the adoption of sustainable land management and soil and water conservation measures, advancing Haleon's ambition to save 50 million litres of water annually within its production processes.

We were also pleased to be joined by representatives from EABL and NCWSC, alongside other partners and stakeholders, underscoring the importance of collective action in advancing water security. 💧

Together, we're investing in healthy watersheds, resilient communities, and a more water-secure future.

Nature is the foundation of how we live, grow, and thrive. 🌱

This World Environment Day, we are reminded of the power of nature-based solutions in restoring our ecosystems.

In the Upper Tana watershed, our work focuses on restoring landscapes, water sources, and strengthening community livelihoods through nature-based solutions.

Every intervention brings us closer to healthier ecosystems and more resilient communities. 🌍

In the Upper Tana Watershed, biodiversity sustains the ecosystems that support water, wildlife, and communities alike. 🌿💧

This International Day for Biological Diversity, we celebrate the resilience of nature and the collective action needed to protect it for generations to come.

It’s easy to overlook landscapes like this, until you understand what they sustain. 💧

Beyond the horizon lies a system that supports water, food, energy, and livelihoods for millions.

Securing the future of water means looking beyond what we see every day, and investing in the landscapes and people that sustain it.

The effects of soil erosion are not just felt at farmland level, they are far reaching.

When this loose soil is carried into rivers, it increases turbidity — making water harder and more expensive to treat downstream.

By investing in nature-based solutions at the source, we’re not only improving soil health and farm productivity, but also protecting water quality for millions who rely on it every day.

What happens at the upstream shapes everything downstream 💧

What does Earth Day look like where you are? 🌍

For us, it starts with water 💧

Because protecting water means protecting livelihoods, ecosystems, and the future we all share.

21/04/2026

Long before your cup of coffee ☕,
there’s a water source sustaining the entire process!

Protecting these water sources doesn’t just conserve nature, it supports farmers, strengthens livelihoods, and keeps value chains moving.

What happens upstream shapes everything downstream 💧
