It’s easy to overlook landscapes like this, until you understand what they sustain. 💧

Beyond the horizon lies a system that supports water, food, energy, and livelihoods for millions.

Securing the future of water means looking beyond what we see every day, and investing in the landscapes and people that sustain it.

The effects of soil erosion are not just felt at farmland level, they are far reaching.

When this loose soil is carried into rivers, it increases turbidity — making water harder and more expensive to treat downstream.

By investing in nature-based solutions at the source, we’re not only improving soil health and farm productivity, but also protecting water quality for millions who rely on it every day.

What happens at the upstream shapes everything downstream 💧

What does Earth Day look like where you are? 🌍

For us, it starts with water 💧

Because protecting water means protecting livelihoods, ecosystems, and the future we all share.

Long before your cup of coffee ☕,
there’s a water source sustaining the entire process!

Protecting these water sources doesn’t just conserve nature, it supports farmers, strengthens livelihoods, and keeps value chains moving.

What happens upstream shapes everything downstream 💧

What we conserve upstream shapes the water we depend on💧

From forests to farms to rivers, every part of the Upper Tana watershed plays a role in securing water for millions downstream.

Through nature-based solutions and sustainable land management, these landscapes are being restored, improving water quality and quantity, and supporting livelihoods along the way.

A day’s work and a decade of impact in under 70 seconds!⏱️

Behind every restored farm and protected water source in the Upper Tana watershed are dedicated Technical Assistants working hand in hand with farmers.👩🏾‍🌾

From guiding sustainable land management practices to supporting nature-based solutions, they are the bridge between knowledge and action, ensuring impact is felt where it matters most.🌱💧

The Chania River, a critical part of the Thika–Chania sub-watershed, is one of the priority areas for the Upper Tana Nairobi Water Fund Trust.

Through nature-based solutions, restoration efforts are being implemented upstream to improve water quality and quantity for the over 4 million residents in Nairobi and another 5 million people across the basin.

Swipe to discover how! 🌳

Peter from Njabini, Nyandarua, adopted agroforestry with the guidance of the Upper Tana-Nairobi Water Fund. By integrating trees with his tree tomatoes, he is not only contributing to the improvement of his livelihood but also to healthier rivers downstream.

As we often say, protecting water doesn’t start in the city, it starts upstream.

In the Upper Tana watershed, farmers are at the heart of this work, adopting practices that promote clean energy and the sustainable use of natural resources.

Through partnerships like this with HomeBiogas, the Upper Tana Nairobi Water Fund Trust continues to invest where impact begins.💧

This World Water Day, we're reminded that rivers like Kiama in Murang’a County are more than just flowing water. They are the lifelines of both local communities upstream and cities downstream.🚰

What happens at the upstream directly affects Nairobi: sediment, pollution, and reduced flow can increase treatment costs, disrupt water supply, and affect millions of people.

By working with communities to conserve rivers, forests, and farms upstream, we ensure cleaner, more reliable water reaches Nairobi and beyond, while also supporting livelihoods upstream.

What happens upstream doesn’t stay upstream, it shapes everything downstream.
