Dr. Joyce Kithure, Second Lady of the Republic of Kenya, who joined us for an engaging conversation on โ€œ๐˜๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐  ๐๐ž๐จ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž ๐š๐ฌ ๐€๐œ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง ๐‚๐ฅ๐ข๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ž ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐œ๐ฒ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐€๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง.โ€

H.E. Dr. Joyce Kithure officially and declared the training open following her powerful remarks on the role of young people in driving meaningful climate action.

Her presence and message were a great source of encouragement to the young people in the room. She reminded us that young people are not just beneficiaries of climate action; we are actors, advocates, and contributors to the solutions our communities and country need.

As AfriYouth Care Group, we sincerely appreciate H.E. AfriYouth Care Group .-ACG" officially commenced the ๐˜๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก ๐‚๐ฅ๐ข๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ž ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐œ๐ฒ & ๐€๐๐ฏ๐จ๐œ๐š๐œ๐ฒ ๐“๐ซ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ , creating a space for young people to strengthen their understanding of climate policy, governance and advocacy.

The first day covered three key areas:

๐Ÿ”น ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐œ๐ฒ & ๐†๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ง๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž โ€” understanding what policy is, the policy-making process and the importance of youth engagement.

๐Ÿ”น ๐†๐ฅ๐จ๐›๐š๐ฅ ๐‚๐ฅ๐ข๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ž ๐…๐ซ๐š๐ฆ๐ž๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐ฌ โ€” exploring the UNFCCC, Kyoto Protocol, Paris Agreement, COP processes and global climate mechanisms.

๐Ÿ”น ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐œ๐ฒ ๐ˆ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง & ๐€๐œ๐œ๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐ญ๐š๐›๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ โ€” examining the gap between policy development and implementation, and exploring how young people can contribute to accountability processes.

A recurring theme throughout the day was the need for young people to actively occupy governance spaces and utilise available platforms, including public participation forums, to contribute to policies that affect their communities and future.

As AfriYouth Care Group, we believe that meaningful youth participation is essential to building inclusive and effective climate action.

The learning has begun. The conversations are underway. Now, it's time to turn knowledge into action.

From understanding policy to understanding the global frameworks that shape climate action.

Our second session of the Youth Climate Policy and Advocacy Training took participants deeper into the international climate policy landscape, exploring key frameworks and processes including the , Kyoto Protocol and Paris Agreement, as well as the process and key global climate mechanisms.

The session was facilitated by JamesThonjo who guided participants through how global commitments and negotiations connect to national action.

One message stood out:

โ€œClimate finance cannot remain in the conference rooms. It has to connect nationally and internationally, and it is up to young people to make that happen.โ€

This session highlighted the importance of understanding not just what global climate agreements say, but how young people can engage with the processes, mechanisms, and decisions that influence climate action at national and local levels.

The first session of our Youth Climate Policy and Advocacy Training set the stage for understanding how policy shapes climate action,and why young people need to be part of the process.

Participants explored:

๐Ÿ”น Why policies matter in addressing societal and climate challenges
๐Ÿ”น The role young people can play in governance and decision-making
๐Ÿ”น How youth voices can contribute to stronger and more responsive climate policies

One question sparked thoughtful conversations:
โ€œIf you were to address one climate challenge, what would it be?โ€

The answers sparked conversations around the climate issues affecting our communities and the importance of ensuring that young people's experiences, ideas and solutions are represented in decision-making.

Because climate action isn't only about what happens on the groundIt is also about what happens in policy rooms.And young people belong in those rooms.

Dr. Kithure is a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Chemistry at the University of Nairobi. Through her ๐’๐š๐•๐„ ๐‚๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ž๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž (๐’๐œ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž ๐€๐๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐•๐š๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ž ๐ญ๐จ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐„๐ง๐ฏ๐ข๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐‚๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ), she champions science-led solutions to and community challenges.
