MP Nelson Koech was asked a simple question: If President Ruto says Kenya will take a 10% stake in Dangote’s Lamu refinery through a government investment vehicle, how will that stake be allocated and who negotiated the deal?

His answer: “I don't know. Ruto said that at a rally.”

That is exactly why Kenyans are asking for the agreements, financing structure and ownership details to be made public.

This business of rushing projects for political point-scoring is going to land us in trouble. The legal safeguards and requirements for public participation weren't established in vain. It is not enough to do the right thing. The right thing must be done right.

The regime must be reminded that the government is a going concern. Regimes come and go. Kenya's long-term interests are more important than short-term political calculations. The regime may be going home, but Kenya is going nowhere. Things must be done the right way. Shortcuts cut deep!

What's the agenda?
In 2026, restrictions on political meetings and demonstrations during another Ebola outbreak again triggered accusations from opposition and civil-society actors that public-health powers were being used to suppress dissent. Whether every allegation was justified or not, the lesson is undeniable: once an epidemic intersects with an election, health measures can acquire profound political consequences.

That is why Kenya must think ahead. A health emergency must never become a democratic emergency. If Ebola requires restrictions on movement or rallies, the government must publish the medical evidence, define the geographical scope, set clear time limits and apply the rules equally to government and opposition. The Ministry must protect Kenyans from Ebola, but it must also demonstrate competence, transparency and respect for democratic freedoms. We cannot afford a health response that fails at the border and a political response that succeeds in closing the democratic space as Kenya heads towards general elections.

Teacher shortages and inequitable deployment continue to severely constrain access to quality Early Childhood Education across Kenya's Arid and Semi-Arid Lands.
Findings from a recent KIPPRA study, covering 152 schools across Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera, reveal alarming disparities in teacher-pupil ratios. While the recommended standard stands at 1:25, actual figures reach 1:69 in Garissa, 1:54 in Wajir, and 1:42 in Mandera. Gender imbalances further exacerbate the workforce crisis, with approximately 67% of female teachers citing safety concerns as a major deterrent for accepting or maintaining postings in remote areas.
Compounding these challenges is a heavy reliance on untrained volunteer teachers, highlighting systemic gaps in formal recruitment, training, and continuous professional development.
