KPC Foundation broke ground for the construction of a solarized 40-foot cold room at the Jomvu Kuu Beach Management Unit (BMU). The project is designed to support the community by providing cold storage facilities for products harvested from the creek, including fish, crabs and other marine produce. The facility will help preserve the products and reduce post-harvest losses while farmers await market opportunities.
Beyond strengthening fishermen, the initiative also seeks to enhance sustainable livelihood opportunities within the community.
As part of the engagement, members of the Dabaso Creek Conservation Group,Watamu conducted a practical training session for members of Bidii Creek CBO and Amano Mikoko CBO. The training focused on introducing crab farming as an additional livelihood activity that supports environmental conservation and sustainability.
The initiative aims to diversify income streams for community members while complementing existing mangrove conservation efforts. Through crab farming, beneficiaries are expected to enhance household livelihoods while strengthening ecosystem protection.
Mr. Dickson Mizinga, Chairperson of Dabaso Creek CBO, took the participants through the training process and affirmed his commitment to supporting the groups through knowledge sharing and mentorship. “Crab farming presents an opportunity not only to improve livelihoods but also to strengthen environmental conservation efforts. We are committed to walking this journey together with the you and creating awareness to ensure its success," he said.

The initiative aligns with KPC Foundation’s pillars of environmental sustainability and community empowerment, reflecting its commitment to creating impactful and sustainable solutions that improve livelihoods while conserving natural resources.
