Kenyan athlete Harrison Ndirangu has been freed after spending five years in prison following a case involving a 17 year old mother of 1 kid aged 3 years and 8 months.
Harrison, from Ol Kalou in Nyandarua County, was only 20 years old when he was sentenced to five years at Naivasha Maximum Prison. By then, his athletics talent had already taken him to the United States, Japan and five other countries outside Africa.
According to Harrison, his troubles began a day after he returned to Kenya from Japan. He had taken his friends to a local bar to celebrate his return when he met a young mother who was his neighbour and a family friend.
Harrison says the young woman told him that she was 22 years old. He claims she later asked him for help finding a job that would enable her to support her child. Out of goodwill, he says he helped her get work assisting his grandmother.
He was shocked when police officers later arrived at his compound accompanied by the girl's parents and arrested him over allegations involving an underage girl.
Harrison maintained that he had been misled about her age and alleged that some people who were unhappy with his progress had set him up.
He started running at a very young age and was already competing in Japan at just 16 years old, earning more than half a million shillings through athletics.
Now 24, Harrison has completed his five year sentence and is determined to return to the athletics field. He says he is still young and wants to rebuild his career and make the most of the talent that once took him around the world.
Harrison says the experience taught him a painful lesson and that he will be more careful about relationships and the people he trusts.
