Kenya's Ministry of ICT has opened public participation on the Draft Artificial Intelligence and Other Emerging Technologies Policy a significant opportunity to shape how AI is governed, developed, deployed, and used across the country.

At Grassroots Disability Agenda (GDA), we believe that Technology for Disability Rights means ensuring AI and emerging technologies are designed to be inclusive, accessible, and rights-based from the very beginning. AI has the potential to expand access to education, employment, healthcare, justice, and public services for persons with disabilities but only if accessibility, non-discrimination, and meaningful participation are embedded in the policy.

We encourage persons with disabilities, Organizations for Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), innovators, researchers, policymakers, and the wider public to review the draft policy and submit their views. Your voice can help build an AI ecosystem that leaves no one behind.

Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) is more than a communication tool,it is a gateway to education, information, participation, and equal opportunity for Deaf persons. Globally, an estimated 1.5 billion people live with some degree of hearing loss, and communication barriers continue to limit access to education and public life for many.
The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) recognizes sign languages and calls on governments to promote their use to ensure accessibility, inclusion, and equal participation. In Kenya, strengthening recognition and use of Kenyan Sign Language supports the realization of rights and helps build education systems and services that work for everyone.
When schools, institutions, and communities embrace Kenyan Sign Language, we move closer to a society where no one is excluded because of how they communicate. How many more persons with disabilities must suffer before their rights are respected?

We strongly condemn and denounce the barbaric and unprofessional treatment of a person with a disability during the protests in Nakuru. Violence, harassment, and excessive use of force against persons with disabilities are unacceptable and violate their dignity, safety, and fundamental human rights.

Persons with disabilities have the same rights as everyone else to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, security, and equal protection under the law. These rights are guaranteed under the Constitution of Kenya and we call on law enforcement agencies to uphold professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights in all circumstances. Disability is not a justification for abuse, intimidation, or violence.

Nothing About Us Without Us. Let us build a society where every person, regardless of ability, is treated with dignity, respect, and justice.

Today marks a historic milestone for the Deaf community in Kenya. 🇰🇪🤟🏾

The passing of the Kenyan Sign Language Bill is a powerful step towards advancing inclusive education, accessibility, communication rights, and equal participation for Deaf persons across the country.

We celebrate and appreciate the commitment and leadership of the Kenya National Association For The Deaf (KNAD), and extend special recognition to Nickson Kakiri, Ashura Michael, and Millie Mabona for their efforts in helping push this bill forward in Parliament and championing the rights of Deaf persons in Kenya.

This achievement reminds us that inclusion goes beyond policy it requires action from all of us.

As a society, let us commit to learning, respecting, and accommodating Kenyan Sign Language. Communication access creates opportunity, dignity, belonging, and participation.

Together, we can build communities and education systems where no one is left behind.

Take time to care for yourself psychologically, physically, and socially. Seeking support, resting, connecting with others, and prioritizing your wellbeing are signs of strength, not weakness.

Every child deserves to grow up being seen, celebrated, and protected not questioned, excluded, or defined by their skin.

Yet for many children with albinism and visible skin differences such as vitiligo, the journey is often filled with stares, stereotypes, discrimination, and silence. Too often, they are made to feel different before they even discover who they are.

Today, on International Albinism Awareness Day 2026, we choose a different story.

A story where every skin tone is worthy.
A story where difference is not a weakness.
A story where children grow up knowing they belong.

This year’s theme, “Proud in My Skintone,” reminds us that identity should never be hidden and dignity should never be negotiated.

Let us create communities where children are raised with confidence, protected from stigma, and empowered to dream without limits.

Because being different in appearance does not make anyone less deserving of love, opportunity, or respect.

Imagine a young woman with a disability waking up to find that heavy rains have washed away the only accessible path to her home. The evacuation alerts were shared online, but not in formats she could access. The community meeting on climate preparedness took place, but no one considered her needs.

Now imagine a different story.

A community where climate information is accessible to everyone. Where young persons with disabilities are trained in green skills, leading environmental initiatives, creating green businesses, and shaping climate solutions. Where inclusion is not an afterthought but a foundation for resilience.

This World Environment Day, we are reminded that climate action must leave no one behind.

We believe that persons with disabilities are not just beneficiaries of climate actionthey are innovators, leaders, advocates, and changemakers.
