What happens when voices from the grassroots finally find their way into the national conversation?

That was one of the powerful moments of Day 1 of .

For GDA this moment carried a special meaning. We were honored to bring forward the outcomes from the Isiolo Regional Consultation conversations shaped by young people reflecting on the climate realities affecting their communities.

From drought and climate vulnerability to health, gender-based violence, school dropout, limited access to climate information, exclusion of persons with disabilities, tokenism, meaningful youth participation and climate finance, the Isiolo conversation reminded us that climate change is not experienced the same way by everyone.

Those voices now joined conversations from other regions, online consultations and the Local Children’s Conference, creating a broader picture of what young people across Kenya are calling for.

The conversation has now moved beyond “what are the issues?” to “what should we do about them, and what should Kenya’s young people say at COP31?”

And this is why regional consultations matter.

Because the Kenya Youth Climate Statement should carry more than words from a conference room. It should carry the experiences, priorities and aspirations of young people from communities across the country.

From Isiolo to Nairobi, from the grassroots to the national table.
One day down. The work continues.

Imagine this scenario…
A person who uses a wheelchair gets a job in an office. The building has a ramp and an accessible entrance that’s accessibility: the environment is designed so people with different disabilities can access and use it.
But what if that employee needs their desk adjusted, a flexible work arrangement, or assistive technology to perform their specific role? That’s reasonable accommodation an adjustment made to meet an individual’s specific needs.
👉 Accessibility removes barriers for everyone. Reasonable accommodation responds to an individual’s needs.
Both are essential for meaningful disability inclusion.

Day 2 of the GBV sensitization caravan saw the County of Isiolo and the stakeholders having a one on one engagement with the community where they were sensitized on the dangers of GBV and the importance of early reporting in case one has been a victim of GBV.

This will help to curb the high number of deaths that have been experienced in the area as a result of GBV cases.

The Caravan will finalize tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Gender-Based Violence (GBV) remains a significant challenge affecting communities within Isiolo County. Chari and Cherab sub-counties are particularly vulnerable due to their vast, remote geographic layout, limited access to formal justice systems and deeply entrenched cultural norms.

A mobile public sensitization caravan is the most effective approach to reach these pastoralists and hard-to-reach communities. By bringing information directly to local trading centers and settlement clusters, the caravan will break barriers of distance, raise widespread awareness, and provide immediate, actionable pathways to safety and justice for survivors.

For the next three day GDA together with other stakeholders in partnership with the County of Isiolo will be involved in raising community awareness on the forms, impacts, and legal consequences of GBV, publicizing referral pathways and support services available to survivors in Isiolo County, engaging local leaders and community members in dialogue to challenge harmful cultural practices and distributing educational materials translated into local languages for lasting impact through a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Sensitization Caravan

With a target of public squares, markets and water points across Merti Sub-County and Cherab Sub-County the caravan will sensitize the masses that includes local administration (chiefs, village elders), community health promoters (CHPs), police gender desk officers and local civil society organizations (CSOs). Distribution of caps, t-shirts, brochures and posters detailing the GBV toll-free helpline numbers will also form part of the sensitization.

Together we can end gender based violence in our communities.

Earlier today GDA was priviledged to attend the relaunch of the National Gender and Equality Commission Isiolo Regional Office and Stakeholder engagement Forum. Our Head of Advocacy and Partnerships Ms. Iris Ayieta made a presentation on Advocacy and Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in Electoral Participation in Kenya. Among other things she was able to point out the barriers that exist within our society that prevent persons with disabilities from fully exercising their political rights, she called on all the stakeholders present to engage in strategies like raising awareness and promoting accessible elections to enable persons with disabilities participate in elections.

Emphasizing on this, Hon. Rehema Jaldesa called on IEBC and all electoral actors to embed equality and inclusion at every stage of the 2027 electoral process. She emphasised accessible voter registration and education, electoral information, polling stations and dispute-resolution mechanisms, particularly for women, youth, persons with disabilities, older persons, ethnic minorities and marginalised communities.

Hon. Jaldesa also urged political parties to remove barriers to the participation and leadership of Special Interest Groups (SIGs), while calling for early identification of exclusion, insecurity and potential conflict risks. She reaffirmed NGEC’s commitment to independently and impartially monitor electoral preparedness and use its Isiolo office as a platform for public education, stakeholder engagement, monitoring and early action on equality and inclusion concerns.
