Back at our Mida Creek monitoring site, now holding around 1,800 mangroves🌿, we added about 200 replacement and new seedlings. Beyond planting, the work means clearing tide debris, removing algae, gap-filling where losses occurred, and checking which seedlings are stressed.

We are also tackling barnacle and oyster colonization on young mangroves. Guided by local knowledge, we are trying a local pole method to give these colonizers an alternative surface, and we are seeing encouraging signs. We are also exploring cold water as an experimental treatment.

Most powerful of all is the leadership of the women in the community, whose care and consistency keep this ecosystem going long after planting day.💯

In mangrove restoration, success is not just how many seedlings go into the mud. It is how many actually survive.💪🏽🌿

As our cities continue to face rising temperatures☀️🥵, Together4Climate is leading efforts to cool down Mombasa.🌿 International Day of Forests 2026 marked the beginning of a major greening effort in our city, and everything aligned, the rain came and people showed up. Young people from across the city, university students, county officials, and the incredible gardening team from the Department of Environment, all along Abdul Nasser Road, hands in the soil, wheelbarrows, shovels, watering cans, real energy.

We planted 40 indigenous trees🌳, 11 coastal species including Mkunguma, Mfune, Mlanyuni, Mbambakofi, Mgurure among others, carefully selected over a year ago and primed for Mombasa’s tough climate and soils. This is people for urban resilience, cooling our city through real trees, real urban forestry, advancing tree equity, and liberating urban soils from concrete.

A powerful moment as the County Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Dan Manyala, joined in, noting the added benefit of traffic calming, and even more grounding when the traffic police officer who mans that road planted the first tree and committed to watch over them.

This is just the beginning. The real work now is maintenance, and scaling this across the city. Grateful to partners including KENHA, , , and Cathy Watson for her generous donation of trees. is powered by YCJF, and together we are growing a cooler, more resilient Mombasa.💪🏾🌿

These past few months Mombasa’s heat has been brutal and so we came together at Westerwelle Startup Haus Mombasa to talk ,shared what’s possible, and left aligned on one thing: we can cool our city, through vegetation and a more responsive built environment.

Honored to have Bamburi Ward MCA Hon with us, committing to take this forward to the County Assembly and push for better building codes that work for people and climate. He’s also committing to standing up for municipal funding for heat resilience in Mombasa.
Very grateful to and for their partnership.

This Saturday, we move to translate these good ideas into action.
We’ll be on Abdulla Fadhil Rd, opening up the soil and planting indigenous trees.

Come join us. Be part of the solution.

What do these images tell you?
Lets face it; -This road medians, holds space for trees
-But, with them being bare, heat is trapped, hence raising street temperatures
- They show a lost potential, soil covered with concrete cannot support tree life!
-Trees bring shade by cooling the streets ,hence restoring comfort to the city space.
Let urban greening begin here in Mombasa!
