Effective drug awareness and sensitisation is about more than sharing information. It means creating honest conversations, understanding community realities, challenging stigma, and ensuring people have the knowledge and support they need to make informed choices.

Recently, our Community Advisory Board (CAB) came together to reflect on our initiatives and help shape the way forward. Their insights, drawn from firsthand community experiences, highlighted the importance of trust, understanding and compassion in strengthening prevention and awareness efforts.

At Reachout Centre Trust, we believe communities must have a voice in shaping solutions that affect their lives. Listening to community experiences helps us design interventions that are relevant, responsive and grounded in reality.

The recommendations from our CAB will continue to guide our work as we strengthen drug awareness, challenge stigma and support healthier and safer communities. When communities are heard, solutions become stronger.

Know Your HIV Status. Protect Your Health. Defend Your Right to Care.

HIV advocacy is more than raising awareness; it is about creating communities where everyone can access HIV testing, prevention, treatment, and support without fear of stigma or discrimination. At Reachout Centre Trust, we advocate for a people-centred HIV response where every individual is treated with dignity, confidentiality, respect, and compassion. Knowing your HIV status empowers you to make informed decisions about your health, while access to prevention and treatment services supports healthier lives.
We also believe that ending HIV stigma is essential to ensuring that people feel safe to seek testing, treatment, and support. It is time to challenge stigma, promote accurate information, strengthen access to services, and ensure that no one is left behind.

Through the Kijana Salama programme, Reachout Centre Trust is empowering Adolescents and Young People (AYP) to take an active role in protecting themselves and their peers from HIV. Trained peer navigators are taking the HIV prevention conversation beyond programme spaces and into the grassroots, engaging fellow young people where they live, learn and socialise.

The peer navigators are creating awareness about PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis), sharing accurate information and encouraging their peers to make informed choices about HIV prevention. By speaking to other young people as peers, they are helping create open conversations around HIV prevention, personal responsibility and healthier choices.

The peer-to-peer awareness activities are being implemented across all six sub-counties of Mombasa County Jomvu, Changamwe, Likoni, Kisauni, Nyali and Mvita bringing HIV prevention information closer to young people in their own communities.

Through Kijana Salama, young people are not simply recipients of information; they are becoming champions of change. By equipping peer navigators with knowledge and skills to reach their peers, Reachout Centre Trust is supporting a youth-led approach to HIV prevention and contributing to efforts to reduce HIV prevalence in Mombasa County.

Great Minds at Work

At Reachout Centre Trust, we continue to invest in strengthening our advocacy capacity and ensuring that our work is grounded in evidence, rights, and meaningful community engagement.

We recently coordinated a one-day advocacy workshop aimed at strengthening our team’s understanding and practical skills in advocacy, while supporting the development and strengthening of our Advocacy Guide and Toolkit.

The session was facilitated by Melba Katindi, NextGen Lawyers Kenya from Nairobi, whose expertise and insights helped our team explore effective advocacy approaches, strategic communication, policy engagement, and how to translate evidence and community experiences into meaningful advocacy action.

It was a day of learning, reflection, collaboration, and strategic thinking bringing together great minds committed to advancing positive change.

Accessing healthcare can be a significant challenge for many people who use drugs, particularly those who inject drugs. Barriers such as stigma, discrimination, fear, and social exclusion often leave vulnerable communities without the vital information and services they need.
At Reachout Centre Trust, we believe that outreach means going beyond traditional health facilities to meet people where they are. Our community-based outreach teams actively connect with hidden and underserved populations, offering accurate health information, HIV and STI prevention services, referrals, and essential harm-reduction support.
We understand that every conversation can open a door, every service can prevent harm, and every person reached is an opportunity to protect health and restore hope. Harm reduction isn't just a strategy; it embodies healthcare, compassion, and effectiveness.

Recovery is not only about leaving substance use behind. For women, the journey can also involve rebuilding confidence, processing difficult experiences, restoring relationships and finding the emotional strength to move forward.
Through Sister-to-Sister, Reachout Centre Trust creates a safe space where women in recovery can come together with female Reachout staff, share their experiences and openly discuss issues affecting their mental and emotional wellbeing. These conversations allow women to feel heard, supported and reminded that they do not have to walk the recovery journey alone.
Supporting a woman’s wellbeing is an important part of supporting her recovery. When women have spaces where they can speak freely, encourage one another and receive compassionate support, they can begin to rebuild their sense of dignity, confidence and hope.
This Wednesday, we celebrate every woman taking steps towards recovery and a healthier, more fulfilling life. Her wellbeing matters. Her voice matters. Her recovery matters.

Reachout Centre Trust joined young people, delegates and partners from across Africa and Kenya for the 1st African Youth Summit 2026, held on Tuesday at Mama Ngina Waterfront, Mombasa.

Held under the theme “Uniting Youth for a Drug-Free, Crime-Free and Transformed Africa,” the summit brought together young people and stakeholders to engage on drug prevention, crime prevention, community safety and the role of youth in building stronger and healthier communities.

The summit was organised by the African Youth Initiative on Crime Prevention, in partnership with Angaza Mission Mosocho and the Mombasa County Government, in collaboration with the Mombasa County Liquor Board, Tourism Kenya, Kenya Red Cross, NACADA and Reachout Centre Trust.

For Reachout Centre Trust, meaningful youth engagement remains an important part of building communities where young people can make informed choices, access support and realise their potential. A safer, drug-free and transformed Africa must be built with young people at the centre of the conversation and the solution.

Recovery is more than overcoming substance use it is about rebuilding lives, restoring confidence, and creating opportunities for a better future.

At Reachout Centre Trust, we support people in recovery by equipping them with practical skills that can help them become self-reliant and earn a sustainable income. Through barbering skills training, participants gain more than a skill they gain an opportunity to rebuild their lives, support themselves and their families, and contribute positively to their communities.

Every haircut can become a source of income.

Every opportunity can strengthen the journey of recovery.

We had a productive County Health Management Team (CHMT) meeting and feedback session that brought together key stakeholders and partners to reflect on progress, share experiences and strengthen our collective response to the health needs of key and vulnerable populations across Mombasa County.

The discussions focused on interventions supporting people who inject drugs (PWID), with particular emphasis on HIV prevention, care and treatment. We also explored practical strategies to strengthen and expand Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) services across the county, ensuring that people who use drugs can access quality, dignified and non-judgmental healthcare.

Reachout Centre Trust also had the opportunity to share insights and data from the Kijana Salama Programme, highlighting how our interventions are reaching young people, supporting their wellbeing, strengthening their knowledge and skills, and contributing to positive change within youth groups and communities.
We are grateful to our partners, including ADS Pwani and MEWA, the County Health Management Team and all stakeholders whose expertise, commitment and valuable feedback continue to strengthen access to healthcare, support young people and advance a health system where no one is left behind.
