Every mother deserves a safe delivery, and every newborn deserves a healthy start. 🤱✨
Recently, ICRHK joined forces with the Council of Governors-Kenya for a powerful peer-to-peer learning exchange in River County. Our mission? To turn data into life-saving action through Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response ( ).
The results of this collaboration speak for themselves:
💰 Governor H.E Maj (Rtd) Dr Dhadho Godhana committed KES 15.4M to operationalize theaters and repair critical equipment at Hola County Referral Hospital.
🏥 Bura Sub-County Hospital saw its emergency obstetric theater restored after 7 years of dormancy.
👶 Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) was established at Hola Level 5 to give tiny fighters a better chance.
📉 The MPDSR Action Tracker was rolled out to ensure every recommendation leads to real, tangible change.
From refueling ambulances to empowering health management teams, we are closing infrastructure and governance gaps to ensure no mother is left behind.
Together, we are building a future where motherhood is a journey of joy, not a risk.
How is your county implementing MPDSR recommendations? Let’s share best practices below."

Today, as the world celebrates ’s Day with flowers and cards, we are honoring a different kind of strength. We’re honoring the mother who didn't just give life, but fought to give her child their life back.
When a child survives sexual abuse, the road to recovery is long. A mother’s unwavering support is the light that guides them through the dark. She is the advocate in the courtroom, the hand held during therapy, and the voice that whispers, "It was not your fault."
To the mothers standing on the frontlines of healing: We see your courage. We honor your resilience. You are the heartbeat of recovery.
Our Gender-Based Violence Recovery Centre (GBVRC) at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital welcomes you. We provide medical care, psychological support, and legal guidance in a safe, confidential environment.

At , our Technical Lead, HIV/STI and Research, Dr. Dismas Ouma, is presenting on Nuru ya Vijana project, a community-led intervention from Kilifi County aimed at improving HIV and SRHR outcomes among young key and vulnerable populations.
The project has built strong networks of trust and collaboration between young people, service providers, and stakeholders, enabling collective action, reducing stigma and discrimination, and improving access to SRHR services.
Through participatory approaches involving community actors, NASCOP, and service providers, and structured engagement mechanisms such as TWGs and Community Advisory Boards, the project continues to strengthen service responsiveness and address barriers to quality SRHR care.

📍 What does it really take to reach those most at risk?
✴️ It takes trust.
✴️ It takes community.
✴️ It takes meeting people where they are.
But it doesn’t stop there.
Because risk is not just about health, it is also about opportunity.
Through initiatives like Nuru ya Vijana, supports young peers with livelihood skills like soap-making, helping reduce economic vulnerability and build safer, more stable futures. Even in the face of stigma and disruption, outcomes remained strong.

In 2025, our work was shaped by one simple truth: lasting change happens through partnership. Through the support of our donors and partners, we expanded access to quality sexual and reproductive health services, strengthened support for survivors of violence, and ensured adolescents and women could access care that is respectful, responsive, and rooted in dignity.
Beyond service delivery, we worked side by side with partners in advocacy spaces, bringing evidence, lived experiences, and community voices into national and global conversations on health and rights.
This progress reflects collective effort, shared commitment, and the power of collaboration for meaningful impact.

📍 Did you know? Many STI infections show no symptoms, yet continue to cause long-term harm when left undiagnosed.

For decades, we’ve relied on syndromic management, treating based on visible symptoms rather than laboratory confirmation. But silence and missed diagnosis come at a cost: untreated infections, continued transmission, and preventable complications.

Our Technical Lead, HIV/STI, Dr. Dismas Ouma, shared critical insights in the Daily Nation newspaper, read more.

It’s time to shift toward integrated, patient-centered STI testing and care that is accessible, stigma-free, and evidence-based.

In Kenya, infections like HIV, human papilloma virus (HPV), chlamydia, syphilis and hepatitis B remain widespread.

At this morning’s WHS Summit session on quality of care for women, children, and adolescents, , represented by the Country Director, Dr. Susan Ontiri, contributed to a critical conversation on improving maternal health outcomes.

Dr. Ontiri highlighted a critical reality in Kenya: national progress masks deep inequalities. In some counties, skilled birth attendance remains below 60%, while adolescent pregnancy rates remain high. Trust in the system is fragile while poor experiences and stigma continue to push women away from care.

But some solutions work.
Dr. Ontiri shared a powerful example of a First-Time Young Mothers Clinic in Mtwapa that has been supported by in partnership with Kilifi County Government, offering integrated support for adolescent mothers from antenatal and postnatal care to psychosocial support, HIV services, and pathways back to education and livelihoods.

This model shows that improving outcomes requires more than clinical care; it demands integrated, people-centered approaches that address the realities young women face. Because it’s not just about getting women to facilities, it’s about ensuring they are respected, supported, and truly cared for.

Key takeaways from the session point to a critical gap: Kenya has strong health policies, but implementation and financing are not keeping pace.
From early leadership in family planning to progress under devolution, the foundation is solid. But key challenges persist:
✅ Counties remain underfunded, limiting service delivery
✅ Contraceptive access is inconsistent, with clear supply gaps
✅ Community health workers, critical to the system are under-resourced
✅ Integration of services is uneven, risking inefficiencies
✅ Marginalized communities continue to face the greatest barriers
At the same time, rising demand for sexual reproductive services and stark regional disparities highlight the urgency of getting this right.
As Country Director emphasized, civil society has a critical role to play in championing women’s health, driving political commitment and securing adequate financing for primary health care.
The takeaway is clear: achieving universal health coverage will require aligning policy, financing, and community systems, while treating health as a long-term investment, not just a cost.
