In partnership with YSO Mombasa County and the Youth Thematic Group of the Coast CSO Network, we commemorated International Youth Day 2026 under the theme “Different Contexts; Same Aspirations.” We explored how young people with diverse political opinions can find common ground, build solidarity, and unite in advancing meaningful reforms.

We also discussed the upcoming National Youth Council Elections, scheduled for October 2026, highlighting opportunities for young people to participate, engage meaningfully, and shape the future of youth leadership and representation.

What does digital surveillance mean for young people’s civic participation? 👁️

Research by Ajenda Kenya, Scroll Bila Troll and YPL in Mombasa found that 84% of respondents sometimes or very often self-censor whendiscussing civic issues online.
With 75% aware of government monitoring, the findings point to a growing chilling effect on online expression and participation.

A study by Ajenda Kenya, in partnership with Scroll Bila Troll & YPL, finds that state digital surveillance is shaping how young people participate in civic spaces in Mombasa.
📊 145 youth surveyed
💬 66% frequently engage in civic/political discussions online
👁️ 75% are aware of government monitoring
🤐 84% sometimes or often self-censor
📉 37% say their engagement decreased or stopped due to surveillance concerns
