Advocating for Accountability in To***co Control Financing💪🚭

Den of Hope Youth Group , together with other key stakeholders, was honored to attend a consultative meeting organized by the National Taxpayers Association (NTA) held on 19th August 2026 to discuss the Solatium Fund in relation to To***co Control in Kenya.

It was an insightful and eye-opening engagement. Key takeaways from the discussion included:

1. The Purpose of the Fund in To***co Control: Understanding how a dedicated fund can cushion victims and support interventions for to***co-related harms, just as the road accident Solatium Fund does.

2. Management of the Fund:Who manages it, how resources are mobilized, and the governance structures needed to ensure transparency and efficiency.

3. Taking Stock:Reviewing how the fund has been utilized since its inception — what has worked, the gaps, and the lessons learned.

As to***co control stakeholders, we believe this fund holds immense potential to advance to***co control in Kenya. However, we still want to see it utilized effectively, transparently, and with full accountability.

Our call is simple: Let the fund serve its purpose — to protect public health, support victims, and build a ***coFree254.

Earlier this week, Den of Hope Youth Group joined a sensitization meeting hosted by the National Taxpayers Association - NTA National Taxpayers Association on:12/8/2026
Theme: _Gender Considerations in To***co and Ni****ne Taxation

Key Takeaways:
✅ Prevalence differs by gender - In Kenya, 17.3% of men smoke vs 0.18% of women. But the gap is closing among youth.
✅ Industry is targeting women & youth - New products like vapes, ni****ne pouches, and flavored ci******es are marketed with beauty, freedom, and lifestyle messages.
✅ Health impacts are not equal - To***co affects women and men differently. Women face pregnancy risks, cervical cancer, and carry the caregiving burden when family members fall sick. Children also bear secondhand smoke exposure at home.

The goal of the meeting: Identify gaps in current to***co laws and design interventions that target different populations and genders.

To***co taxation is one of the most powerful tools we have. But for it to work, it must be Gender-responsive

Den of Hope participated in a two day training workshop that brought together 40 Youth champions to strengthen their capacity on to***co industry interference, WHO Article 5.3 and practical tools to recognize, document and counter industry tactics that undermine public health.

Our children are starting drugs as early as *6 YEARS OLD*. 😔
1 in every 8 Kenyans🇰🇪 - that's (3.2 million people) - struggle with alcohol.

The (National Policy on Drugs and Substance Abuse 2025) is here with 1 clear goal:
*Safeguarding society from the harmful effects of alcohol, drugs and substance use.*

Den of Hope joined hands with SCAD Kenya , Cross Kenya, Nacada Kenya , International Institute for Legislative Affairs To***co Control and Health Promotion Alliance and other stakeholders for this sensitization.

Earlier today, Den of Hope joined key stakeholders in a high-level meeting to discuss the development of research aimed at generating credible data on the illicit trade of to***co products in Kenya.*

We are committed to ✅data-driven advocacy to make to***co products less affordable and accessible to children, young people, and vulnerable populations.

Other organizations present included:
✅Kenya To***co & Ni****ne Tax Coalition, ✅IILA,
✅TJNA,
✅NACADA, and ✅KRA.

Together, we are working toward healthier communities and stronger policy action.

What happens when ni****ne products start finding their way into schools and reaching children at increasingly younger ages?

Yesterday, IILA joined members of the Kenya To***co and Ni****ne Tax Coalition (KTNTC) at a media briefing calling for the urgent passage of the To***co Control (Amendment) Bill, 2024.

As vapes and ni****ne pouches become more visible and appealing to young people, coalition members warned that delays in passing the Bill leave children and youth vulnerable to addiction and its lifelong consequences.

Protecting the next generation cannot wait. Parliament has an opportunity to strengthen safeguards and close regulatory gaps before more young people are exposed.
