Africa Youth Trust

Africa Youth Trust Working towards youth friendly societies in Africa Africa Youth Trust (AYT) was registered as a Trust under the Laws of Kenya in 2005.
(1)

AYT was created specifically to spearhead a Youth Led Development model in Kenya with a view to replication in other African Countries. Youth Led Development (YLD) is about young people making a living and future for themselves and their communities. YLD involves Economic and Social investments such as business start-ups and community improvement projects, devised and managed by young people. YLD

projects involve adult mentors with skills in the respective area being addressed, working with and mentoring the young people.

This Mother’s Day, we celebrates the mothers, grandmothers, and guardians who shape the lives of Africa’s young people every single day.

You are the reason our youth show up with hope, resilience, and the courage to dream.

Happy Mother’s Day to the women who build Africa’s future from the ground up.

Yesterday marked the final day of the Economic Literacy, Budget Accountability and Governance (ELBAG) training. Women participants strengthened practical civic action skills to advance accountability in their communities.

The session focused on tools for action including photovoice, petitions, community radio engagement and structured advocacy approaches. Participants also gained skills on developing policy memos to clearly present community priorities and demands to decision makers.

Through ELBAG, the trained women they gain knowledge and confidence to engage public institutions, track public resources and advocate for gender responsive budgeting. Strong civic participation leads to equitable development outcomes.

We remain committed to strengthening community voices and supporting citizens to demand transparent governance and inclusive budgeting processes.

Today we held an Economic Literacy, Accountability, Budgetary and Governance training with women in Mukuru through our Access to Justice and Security Project.

The session helped them to understand how government budgets are planned and why gender responsive budgeting matters for families and communities.
Participants learned how public resources affect health, education, security, and livelihoods. They also practiced applying budgeting skills at household level so the knowledge supports daily decision making.

Empowered communities ask questions, follow public spending, and demand services that respond to real needs.

Together we build informed citizens and stronger communities.

This Labour Day, we’re celebrating the young Africans building our continent one code, one canvas, one craft, one click at a time.

From a software developer in Kenya to an artist in Nigeria, a craftsman in Zambia, or someone piecing together gigs online from Congo, you are the engine fuelling Africa’s growth. We salute you.

Thanks to our donors, programs like Shared Futures and Access to Justice continue to support young women and men in finding dignified livelihoods.

Today, we reaffirm our commitment to fighting for:
✅ Skills that lead to dignified, sustainable jobs
✅ Youth voices in labour policy & social protection
✅ Fair wages and safe working conditions for all

Too often, young people are seen as recipients of decisions made by others. But across Africa, youth are leading, organizing, innovating, and holding leaders accountable.

It’s time to move from “youth inclusion” to youth partnership in governance.

Our Executive Director, Winifred Okumu, is currently participating in a high-level continental convening on "Reflections on Democracy, Governance, and Human Rights in Africa" (20th–24th April 2026).

During her panel, Winifred shared powerful insights into the growing collaboration between Civil Society Organizations and African Union organs, including African Union ECOSOCC and the Pan-African Parliament.

But one message stood out the most: Data is no longer optional.

Thanks to our partnerships with Data for Governance Alliance (D4GA), Afrobarometer, you are proving that evidence-based advocacy can:
✅ Drive informed community dialogues
✅ Engage duty bearers more effectively
✅ Influence policy at national and continental levels
✅ Develop stronger, data-driven proposals

As Winifred reminded us all:

"Youth are not just beneficiaries of governance—they are key partners in shaping Africa’s democratic future."

At Africa Youth Trust, we remain committed to amplifying youth voices from the grassroots to continental platforms. Together, we're building an inclusive, accountable, and evidence-driven Africa.

Today, our Head of Programs, Ms. Irma Maringo, proudly represented Africa Youth Trust at the Galvanizing CSOs for the Success of the Africa Facility to Support Inclusive Transitions (AFSIT) Forum, organized by the African Union ECOSOCC

In her presentation, she urged that young people are already leaders—mobilizing communities, building peace, holding governments accountable. But these roles are often ignored in formal transition systems. The problem isn’t that youth aren’t engaged. It’s that they don’t yet have real influence.

"From Kenya to Senegal to South Sudan, young people are trained and consulted, but rarely included in transitional governments, councils, or mediation teams. That’s a risk we cannot afford."

Excluding youth makes transitions less legitimate and less durable.
Ms. Maringo called on the AFSIT to move from participation to co-creation—by embedding youth in decision-making, funding youth-led organizations, and measuring influence rather than just counting people in a room.

When it comes to justice for survivors of gender-based violence, police officers play a key role—not just in responding, but in connecting victims to the entire justice system.

From the first report through case follow-ups to testifying in court, their support can make all the difference.

Let's continue to advocate for trauma-informed, survivor-centered policing. Every survivor deserves a champion in the system. 💜

Today at the Reuben Centre, Africa Youth Trust brought together case managers, police, court officials, and justice actors for an important quarterly meeting. Because too many survivors face delays, confusion, and broken links between the police station and the courtroom.

We spent the day:
✅ Reviewing and strengthening referral pathways
✅ Identifying real challenges at every stage of the justice process
✅ Building practical solutions to improve coordination—from first report to final ruling

Our goal is simple: to ease the burden of violence and make justice a reality, not a privilege.

To every donor walking with us on this journey—thank you. Your funding turns meetings like this into measurable change for survivors.

Earlier this morning at the Reuben Center, we held a powerful GBV awareness and sensitization forum — bringing together women to discuss prevention, response, and justice.

Topics included:
✅Recognizing early warning signs of GBV
Safe reporting channels
✅ Preserving evidence when visiting hospitals or police stations
✅Leaning on support systems like family and counseling

In line with this year’s IWD theme: Rights, Equality, and Action, we also addressed the often invisible burden of paid and unpaid care work — advocating for recognition, fairness, and better systems to support the work that sustains us all.
📢 Report GBV via our 21094 SMS platform.

You are not alone. Let’s act for rights, justice, and lasting change.
