The launch of Kenya's Every Woman Every Newborn (EWENE) Agenda and Acceleration Plan 2026โ€“2028 is an important step toward ensuring that every mother and baby can access the care they need.

Making that vision a reality takes more than national policies. It requires communities to be part of the solution.

In Migori, Homa Bay, and Baringo Counties, community health committees are bringing together community members, health workers, facility staff, and local leaders to identify challenges and find practical ways to improve care. Their work helps ensure that health services reflect the needs and priorities of the people they serve.

When communities have a seat at the table, health systems work better for everyone.

Across Kenya, communities and health workers are continuing to shape more trusted, responsive health systems.๐ŸŒŸ

This edition of our insider report highlights how community health committees are driving accountability and improving access to care, while Lwala Community Hospital continues to raise standards for compassionate, high-quality care.

We also share progress in strengthening maternal and newborn health, advancing digital health systems, supporting CHW professionalization, and expanding community-led health to new counties.

Together, these stories reflect whatโ€™s possible when communities are trusted as leaders in building stronger health systems.

What does high-quality, community-led health care actually look like?

At Lwala Community Hospital, it looks like mothers receiving respectful maternity care. It looks like community members shaping hospital decisions. It looks like clinicians and neighbors working side-by-side to raise the standard of care for everyone.

Our latest blog post shares how a hospital built by neighbors became a model for community-led health in Kenya. Now, through our hospitalโ€™s endowment, weโ€™re working to secure this care for generations to come.

For years, global health conversations have focused on expansion: more programs, more interventions, more initiatives to close urgent gaps.

This was the focus of the side event organized by Community Health Units For Universal Health Coverage (CHU4UHC platform) at , where participants reflected on how to build stronger, more resilient, country-led health systems. Throughout the discussion there was a broad consensus that lasting progress requires coordinated action rooted in national systems and communities.

We reflected on the fragmentation that still shapes much of global health financing and implementation. When partners, donors, and programs operate in silos, countries are often left managing parallel systems that are difficult to coordinate and sustain.

The conversation highlighted the need for integrated planning, aligned investment, and long-term support for public health systems that are rooted in communities.

It was encouraging to see how much the conversation has evolved. The value of community health is well established, and attention is now shifting toward how global health actors can better support country-led models that are financially sustainable, embedded within public systems, and designed to endure beyond funding cycles.

At Lwala Community Alliance, we believe communities should play a leading role in the research process, as they are best positioned to identify challenges and solutions that are relevant to their context.

Through the Centres for Exchange initiative, supported by @/Wellcome Trust, Lwala is joining seven other organisations across India, Kenya, and South Africa to explore more equitable and reciprocal approaches to knowledge exchange in health research.
Across the initiative, partners are testing what shifts when communities move from being subjects of research to active participants in shaping it.

As part of this project, we're engaging community members, marginalized groups, researchers, Lwala staff, and government officials throughout the Lwala Household Survey process in Migori County โ€” from design and implementation to analysis and knowledge sharing.

One lesson emerging from this work is that when communities are meaningfully involved in health research, trust grows, learning becomes more collaborative, and communities feel a stronger sense of agency and ownership.

The Centres for Exchange website has launched as a living learning resource, featuring emerging insights from across the programme, including quarterly learning packages.

A big shoutout to the team supporting this project from Lwala: Sandra Mudhune, Jane Wamae, Richard Wamai, Felix Owino, and Sylvia Otieno.
