📢 BIG NEWS FROM BUNGOMA COUNTY! 🤝🇰🇪

We are thrilled to announce that Lwala Community Alliance has signed a milestone Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the County Government of Bungoma to dramatically accelerate efforts to reduce preventable maternal and newborn deaths!

Bungoma County has a strong health foundation with 351 facilities, 359 Community Health Units, and 3,590 Community Health Promoters (CHPs). However, 2026 data shows that life-threatening complications like postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), hypertension, and newborn birth asphyxia continue to challenge families. Accessing a hospital is just the first step—the health system must be fully equipped to recognize risks early and respond instantly.

Together, Lwala and Bungoma County are stepping up to close these gaps! 🧵👇
What this partnership will achieve:

* 🏥 Strengthening Emergency Care: Equipping frontline health facilities to respond rapidly to complications like PPH, sepsis, and obstructed labor.
* 🩺 Continuous Mentorship: Moving beyond one-off training to provide ongoing, simulation-based learning for health workers.
* 👶 Saving Newborns: Enhancing neonatal resuscitation and immediate stabilization for premature or sick babies.
* 🏡 Community-to-Facility Linkages: Supporting CHPs and Primary Care Networks to identify pregnancies earlier (aiming for the crucial first 12 weeks!) and track postnatal follow-ups.
* 📊 Data-Driven Action: Strengthening Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) systems to translate real county data into immediate, life-saving clinical adjustments.

Advancing Near Vision Access in Meru County 👓
What does it look like to make vision care part of primary health care?

In Meru County, it starts with strong county leadership, community health workers, health facilities, and partners working together to bring near-vision screening and reading glasses closer to our communities.

Lwala Community Alliance was honored to pay a courtesy call to the Governor of Meru County Hon. Rev. Mutuma M'Ethingia, alongside County leadership and our partners at COG; Professor Mutakha, MOH; Dr. Monicah Bitok, GRADIF, and Gladys Miriti, to discuss the scale-up of near vision services across the county.

Of Meru’s population of 1.6 million people, nearly 24% are aged 40+, presenting an important opportunity to expand access to affordable near vision correction. Through this partnership, we aim to screen nearly 500,000 people over the next 6 months. Together, we are working toward:

🎒 Training more than 3,600 Community Health Workers
🏥 Equipping and training teams across 219 health facilities
👓 Deploying approximately 83,000 pairs of near-vision glasses across all 11 subcounties
🤝 Integrating eye health into existing community and primary health care platforms

The approach is intentionally designed around county ownership and strong community–facility linkages. Through a cascade training model, trainers will equip facility champions and community health teams to take screening and services closer to where people live and work.

Near vision is about more than seeing clearly. It enables people to work, learn, earn, and participate fully in daily life. We are grateful to the Meru County Government for its leadership in bringing these essential services closer to communities.
Near vision care must be part of primary healthcare because a healthier community is one where essential care—including eye care—is within reach.

A New Chapter for Maternal and Newborn Health in Kisumu 💙

We’re excited to share that Lwala Community Alliance and the County Government of Kisumu have signed a partnership agreement to strengthen maternal and newborn health services across the county.

Together, we will:
•⁠ ⁠Strengthen emergency obstetric and newborn care
•⁠ ⁠Build health worker skills through mentorship and coaching
•⁠ ⁠Improve quality of care across facilities
•⁠ ⁠Strengthen referral systems and coordination
•⁠ ⁠Use data to drive learning and better decisions
•⁠ ⁠Connect community and facility-based care from early ANC through delivery and postnatal care

This partnership builds on the leadership, systems and work already underway in Kisumu County.

We’re excited to contribute to this important effort to strengthen health systems and advance maternal and newborn health outcomes.

What happens when a community health worker is invited into the conversation?

Sometimes, policy changes.

Margaret Odera, a community health worker (CHW) leader from Kenya, spoke at a ministerial meeting at the 2023 World Health Assembly—a contribution the Director General of Africa CDC later credited, at a 2025 United Nations General Assembly side meeting, as central to Kenya’s subsequent policy change on CHWs.

Who speaks can shape what happens next. Community Health Impact Coalition's (CHIC) CHW Advocates Bureau—formally the Speakers Bureau—was built so the expertise and lived experience of leaders like Margaret are part of the decisions that shape global health.

Today, 13 of Lwala’s expert CHW advocates sit on CHIC’s global Speakers Bureau, ready to use their voices to influence policy that improves health care for their community and communities around the world.

Real change starts with trusted conversations ✨

In Migori County, young people are creating safe spaces for their peers to access accurate information, family planning, and healthcare guidance without judgment. By building trust through community dialogue, this work is shifting social norms and creating enabling environments for young people to exercise agency over their health.

Across Migori, Youth Peer Providers (YPPs) are helping change attitudes around sexual and reproductive health by creating safe, youth-friendly spaces where young people can have open conversations, challenge misconceptions, and access accurate information.

This peer-peer approach is helping young people feel more informed, supported, and confident to make decisions about their health.

🌱 When young people have the information, choices, and support to make decisions about their reproductive health, they have greater agency to shape their futures.

And that’s a wrap for Better Breaks. 🎬

🎉 Last week across eight subcounties, our youth peer providers (YPPs) hosted three days of activities to keep young people informed, engaged, and connected during school break.

⚽From soccer games and dance competitions to lessons on hygiene, menstrual health, and family planning information and services, YPPs created spaces where young people could learn, ask questions, and access support from trusted peers.

🤝 Better Breaks is one example of what youth-led health care can look like in practice, bringing information, services, and meaningful connection closer to young people.

A big thank you to our YPPs and everyone who made Better Breaks a success! 💙
