At the upcoming World Health Assembly, Lwala Co-CEO Julius Mbeya will join a panel hosted by Livelihood Impact Fund on scaling access to vision care.

The discussion will explore how near-vision care can be integrated into primary health systems and scaled through community health workers, supported by strong supply chains and government systems.

Working with county governments in Kenya, Lwala has trained more than 3,700 health workers and distributed nearly 50,000 reading glasses through community platforms, offering a replicable model for scaling pilot interventions.

Julius will share these lessons alongside leaders from Clinton Health Access Initiative, Last Mile Health, International Agency for Prevention of Blindness, World Health Organization (WHO), and Ministries of Health from Nigeria and Uganda.

The session also marks the launch of the Global Vision Impact Awards by Livelihood Impact Fund, a new financing initiative supporting governments to expand access to vision care, focused on moving from pilots to national adoption.

The good news: CHWs are eager to engage with AI and use it to sharpen their skills.

Where it gets tricky: Most AI being used in community health today aren’t built with public stewardship in mind. Many initiatives are led by NGOs or private actors, with limited government involvement--meaning they don’t easily translate into national programs.

Lwala’s vision for AI? Technologies that strengthen–rather than disrupt–Kenya’s commitment to universal health coverage.

At the launch of the new World Health Organization (WHO) Community Health Worker curriculum guide, Lwala’s Chief Program Officer, Sandra Mudhune, spoke on what it will take to translate this guidance into real impact.

The guide sets a global standard for training and supporting CHWs as a professional workforce. It reflects a clear direction: training must be matched with fair pay, supervision, and system integration. Lwala-supported CHWs contributed to its development, ensuring frontline experience shaped the guidance.

In Migori County, Lwala and the county government celebrate the launch of Midwife Kits, advancing safer births for mothers and newborns 🤱🏾

As our Chief Programs Officer, Sandra Mundhune shared, “Behind every kit is a mother, a newborn, and a midwife doing everything possible to ensure a safe delivery. At Lwala, we believe dignity in care starts with having the right tools in hand.”

Midwives are often the difference between life and death during childbirth, yet many work without the supplies they need. These kits equip midwives with essential medicines and equipment to enable safe deliveries, manage complications, and protect both mothers and newborns.

H.E. Governor Ochilo Ayacko noted, “During a time when shifts in global health funding have tested health systems, we recognize Lwala as a consistent partner, supporting the health of mothers and babies in Migori County. Each of these kits we are receiving today will help ensure safer deliveries for mothers and newborns across our communities.”

With support from Direct Relief, frontline providers are better equipped, and more mothers and newborns can receive the care they need when it matters most.
