Widowhood should not mean voicelessness.

I had the honor to speak on behalf of widowed persons across Kenya — sharing our stories, our challenges, and our strength.

We are not asking for pity. We are demanding dignity, protection of property rights, inclusion, and support.

When we empower a widowed person, we empower a family, a community, and a nation.

Thank you to the organizers and to every widowed person who showed up and spoke out. Our voice matters.

This photo takes me back to where it all began. Deep in Samburu County, under an acacia tree, on red soil, with just a few stools and a big dream.
5 years ago, I started a journey close to my heart — to advocate for widows' rights. No stage. No microphone. Just listening to stories of pain, resilience, and hope that the world had ignored for too long.
I didn't know how far we would go. I only knew I couldn't look away.
5 years down the line, I still love what I started. The roads are still dusty, the challenges are still real, but so is the change. One widow at a time, one right at a time, one voice at a time.
This is not just work for me. It's purpose. It's home.
To every widow, — your dignity matters. Your land matters. Your voice matters. I will keep showing up.

There is a saying "if you are not at the table, you are on the Menu".
Yesterday I was invited to the decision _making table where issues affecting widowed persons were discussed.
The invitation matters. It means our lived experiences are finally being seen as expertise.
Inclusion is the first step to justice.

When I speak or listen to discussion that concern widowed persons I feel great. It's something that is fulfilling. Despite the challenges they go through atleast we can voice them and get solutions.
Justice for widowed persons brings alot of peace not only to them but also their children and loved ones.
Every Widowed person deserves justice and dignity.

Today we discuss a policy that moves women from beneficiaries to builders of the economy.

The National Policy on Women Economic Empowerment (Sessional Paper No. 6 of 2026) is Kenya's first standalone framework dedicated to Women Economic Empowerment.

What does it cover?
It goes beyond small loans. It addresses systemic barriers across 5 priority sectors: Trade & Entrepreneurship, Manufacturing (textiles & apparel), ICT & Digital Economy, Creative Economy, and Agriculture & Food Security.

It also finally recognizes:
✓ Unpaid Care Work - childcare, fetching water, family care that keeps women out of paid work
✓ Access to finance, markets & AGPO 30% procurement
✓ Gender-Based Violence & health as economic issues
✓ Women in humanitarian crises - drought, floods, pandemics

How will it work?
Whole-of-Government approach: National Treasury to anchor gender-responsive budgeting, National Gender and Equality Commission to oversee accountability, plus Counties, Private Sector and funds like WEF, Uwezo Fund, NGAAF & Hustler Fund harmonized for impact.

As discussed in Mombasa this week by KEWOPA & Parliament, the big question now is IMPLEMENTATION. In 2019, the Gender Policy was approved but got only Ksh 15M against a need of Ksh 500M. NPWEE must not remain a paper framework.

Women are not asking for charity. We are asking for an enabling environment to trade, to own land, to lead, and to thrive.

Widowhood is not a final chapter. God is a God of restoration, and He can transform pain into strength, mourning into Joy, and hopelessness into purpose. As widows encourage one another and walk in faith, they become living testimonies of God's faithfulness.

Our widows' project is more than just a program—it is a place of learning, healing, and transformation.

It is here that we build resilience, gather strength, and support one another through every season of life. Together, we learn about our rights, develop new skills, embrace economic opportunities, and encourage each other to rise above challenges.

Every meeting reminds us that no widow should walk alone. Through shared experiences, hope is restored, confidence is rebuilt, and lasting friendships are formed.

When women come together, they don't just overcome—they thrive.

Together, we continue to create a future where every widow lives with dignity, confidence, and the opportunity to reach her full potential.

One of the greatest achievements we celebrate is seeing widows become confident, informed, and empowered.

Over the years, we have witnessed remarkable growth as widows have gained a deeper understanding of their rights, challenged harmful stereotypes, and embraced opportunities for social and economic empowerment. Today, many are confidently speaking up for themselves, making informed financial decisions, starting businesses, supporting one another, and taking leadership roles within their communities.

Empowerment is more than economic independence—it is restoring dignity, building confidence, and ensuring that every widow knows her voice matters and her rights deserve to be protected.

We remain committed to walking this journey together because when widows are empowered, families are strengthened, communities thrive, and lasting change becomes possible.

Together, we are not just changing lives—we are changing the narrative around widowhood.

Empowering widows goes beyond providing support, it is about equipping them with the knowledge and skills to build financially secure and independent lives.

I was honored to speak at the Centre Will Widows Conference on economic empowerment and financial literacy, where we explored practical money management using the 50:20:20:10 budgeting rule. Through informed financial decisions, widows can strengthen their resilience, grow their incomes, and create a brighter future for themselves and their families.

At Together As One Kithirune ,we remain committed to uplifting widows through empowerment, capacity building, and sustainable economic opportunities.
