Maternal healthcare is a RIGHT, not a political branding opportunity.
We strongly condemn the use of the Mombasa Governor’s. Abdul Swamad personal image on Mother & Child Health Handbooks meant for prenatal and postnatal care.
These books are sacred tools for birth justice, meant to protect mothers, support safe pregnancies, and uphold the dignity of women and children—not serve as campaign posters.
Birth justice means centering mothers, not politicians.
When a public official places his face on a maternal health handbook, it sends a dangerous message: that women must be grateful to individuals for services that are funded by public taxes and guaranteed by the Constitution. Safe pregnancy, respectful maternity care, and postnatal support are not favors—they are rights.
At a time when women are still being detained in hospitals after giving birth, dying from preventable maternal complications, and facing violence in healthcare spaces, this kind of political self-promotion is insulting and unacceptable.
We reject the personalization of public healthcare. We reject the politicization of women’s bodies. We demand dignity, accountability, and reproductive justice.
Our wombs are not campaign grounds. Maternal care is not a photo opportunity.
