Smiles, patience, and unity in action ❀️🍲

Our Marera Comprehensive School students lined up peacefully as they waited to be served lunch. A simple meal can make a powerful difference β€” giving children the energy to learn, grow, and dream bigger every day.

Our Umoja students receive nutritious lunch daily which helps support their education journey and will lead to brighter futures for their communities. 🌍✨

Happy National Librarian Day! πŸ“šβœ¨

Today, we celebrate the heart of our Reason 2 Smile Library in Kenya β€” our incredible librarian, Norbert.

Thank you, Norbert, for your dedication, kindness, and passion for empowering young minds through the power of books and literacy. Because of you, our library is more than just a place to read β€” it’s a space where curiosity grows, dreams take shape, and futures are inspired. 🧑

Your work makes a lasting difference in our community every single day. We appreciate you!!

πŸ“’ Leadership Update from the Umoja Project

Following the resignation of longtime Kenyan Director Leonard Otiende, Linda Olaysa has been appointed Interim Director. Linda has been part of the project since shortly after its inception and has served as Deputy Director since 2018. Her dedication to the children we serve makes her a natural choice to lead during this transition.

We are deeply grateful to Leonard for his 8 years of leadership and commitment to the Umoja Project and the thousands of children impacted through its programs. ❀️

With your continued support, we look forward to continuing our mission of educating children and transforming communitiesβ€”one child at a time. 🌍✨

Empowering Young Readers at Lwala Kadawa Comprehensive School πŸ“šβœ¨

On Saturday, our Reason 2 Smile Library team brought two of our special literacy programs β€” Reading Competition and Storytelling Sessions β€” to Lwala Kadawa Comprehensive School. Over the course of five hours, 72 learners from Grades 4, 5, and 6 participated in activities designed to strengthen reading skills, confidence, and creativity. πŸ“–

The learners also shared poems, memory verses, and riddles, adding energy and excitement to the program while showcasing their talents.

We were honored to be joined by Umoja Foundation Deputy Director, Madam Linda Olasya, who spent time encouraging the students and speaking with them about the power of education and reading.

The learners and school administration expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the program and extended thanks to Umoja for supporting these opportunities.

Moments like these remind us why we do this work β€” empowering children through education and literacy.

Earlier this week, our Reason 2 Smile Library team had the pleasure of visiting three different libraries for insightful site visits. πŸ“šβœ¨

Pictured below is the group during our visit to the library at The Kisumu Polytechnic College. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn, connect, and share ideas that will continue to strengthen our mission of transforming communities one child at a time through education and literacy! πŸ’™πŸ“–

We’re excited to share that this school year, 5,453 primary and junior high Umoja students are receiving daily school lunches β€” along with 130 students from child-headed households who are receiving additional food support. πŸ½οΈπŸ’›

These meals are more than nourishment β€” they are essential to keeping children healthy, focused, and in school.

Because when hunger is removed as a barrier, education becomes possible.

A Day of Learning & Creativity at the Reason2Smile Library! βœ¨πŸ“š

Last week, our Reason2Smile Library staff had the joy of hosting 184 students from Grade 4 and Grade 5 from three different partner schools β€” Bar Anding'o, Marera, and Nyakongo β€” for an exciting FIVE hour literacy event filled with reading competitions and storytelling sessions.

The learners amazed our staff with their confidence and creativity as they shared riddles, memory verses, and poems that were both educational and inspiring. The energy in the room was truly unforgettable!

Our library staff also took this opportunity to guide the learners on how to effectively use library resources and understand the importance of reading. For many of them, it was their very first time stepping into a library β€” and their excitement said it all!

Moments like this remind us why we do what we do β€” empowering young minds through literacy and opportunity! 🧑
