PACIDA CEO, Patrick Katelo, known in global circles as the 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬’ 𝐕𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞 , today had the honour of speaking as a panellist at the ongoing 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐆𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐚.

His participation comes at a significant moment for pastoralism globally. The 2026 gathering is being held as part of the 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 (𝐈𝐘𝐑𝐏 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔), a global initiative seeking to raise awareness of the contribution of rangelands and pastoralist communities to food security, ecosystem sustainability, climate resilience and rural development.

Held from 𝟏𝟎–𝟏𝟓 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, the Global Pastoralist Gathering brings together approximately *𝟑𝟎𝟎 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟏𝟎𝟐 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 to consolidate the priorities emerging from pastoralist gatherings and dialogues held across different regions of the world. The gathering seeks to develop a joint declaration and recommendations reflecting the priorities of pastoralists, including women and youth, while identifying policy directions and mechanisms for strengthening the sustainability of rangelands and pastoralism.

The outcomes are expected to feed into the global policy process, including the 𝟏𝟕𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐍 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐭 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐔𝐍𝐂𝐂𝐃 𝐂𝐎𝐏𝟏𝟕) , which will also take place in Mongolia later this month.

Speaking as a panelist, Patrick shared perspectives drawn from the realities of pastoralist communities in Kenya and the wider region, reflecting on the future of pastoralism in the face of climate change, changing landscapes, resource pressures and evolving development priorities.

As the world marks the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists, the message from Mongolia is clear: the future of pastoralism must be shaped with pastoralists, not merely for them.

PACIDA participated in a six-day Cross-Landscape and Seascape Learning Visit across Isiolo and Samburu Counties under the GEF-6 Programme funded by Global Environment Facility and supported by UNDP Kenya.

Hosted by MID-P KENYA in Isiolo and PACIDA in Samburu, the visit brought together partners from the Samburu- Isiolo Conservation Area (SICA) Landscape, Kwale, Bogoria, and Baringo landscapes.

Attended by county officials, the visit provided an opportunity to learn directly from community-led initiatives and explore solutions that can be adapted to their own landscapes, share best practices, and strengthen collaboration on biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable livelihoods.

PACIDA, through the Resilient Approaches in Natural Rangeland Ecosystem (RANGE) Programme, funded by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Kenya through Mercy Corps, distributed livelihood starter kits to two self-help groups to promote enterprise development and strengthen household resilience.

The Nabulu Self-Help Group from Merille received a complete apiculture package comprising Langstroth beehives, smokers, honey storage containers, and other essential beekeeping equipment. Thatha Women Group in Maikona received a poultry starter package consisting of 120 improved Kienyeji chicks, layer mash, poultry feeds, and feeders.

The intervention aims to diversify livelihoods by reducing dependence on climate-vulnerable pastoralism and promoting sustainable alternative income sources through apiculture and poultry farming, contributing to improved household incomes and long-term community resilience.

Mercy Corps I Embassy of the Netherlands in Kenya

PACIDA, through the Resilient Approaches in Natural Rangeland Ecosystem (RANGE) Programme, funded by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Kenya through Mercy Corps, supported four farmer groups: Naningo Sikinte Group (Tirgamo), Naisiriri Group (Nairibi), Nagayo Group (Adano Rangi), and St. Monica Group (Elgade) in Laisamis and Maikona wards with climate-smart agriculture (CSA) technologies and farm inputs.

Building on previous training, the support provided fruit and agroforestry tree seedlings, water tanks, drip irrigation kits, shade nets, hand tools, and protective equipment.

By integrating these four CSA groups alongside two existing livelihood groups (totaling six supported groups), the initiative aims to boost food production, strengthen climate resilience, improve natural resource management, and link farmers to sustainable, profitable market value chains.

PACIDA, through the “Climate-Induced Migrants’ Food Security Response and Resilience Building Project,” Funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency KOICA Kenya Office and Miral Welfare Foundation Kenya, distributed unimix supplementary food items to vulnerable households targeting children under five years affected by malnutrition in Kalacha, Maikona, Kutur, and Rage villages in Marsabit County.

The project team conducted routine monitoring of the School Meals Programme in supported schools, focusing on food utilization, meal preparation and quality, beneficiary attendance, stock management, and compliance with feeding guidelines. The exercise brought together school management committees, teachers, and cooks to identify operational challenges, document lessons learned, and recommend actions to improve effectiveness and sustainability.

This intervention seeks to improve nutrition for children under five and build resilience in households facing climate-induced food insecurity.

THE VOICES OF PEACE

Brilliant young learners from Rawana, Funan Qumbi, Turbi, and Tiigo united under “Beyond Classrooms: We Are Voices for Peace.” Through creative arts of songs, poems, and plays, they showed that diversity is to be celebrated, not feared.

The interschool peace forum, facilitated by PACIDA under the Emergency Project with support from Caritas Germany, was attended by the Sub-County Director of Education, school heads, and teachers.

By fostering peace and resource-sharing dialogues, the initiative builds reconciliation and lasting community ties.

PACIDA, in partnership with Condivisione fra i Popoli under the SISCA project, facilitated a community feedback session with the Gas Community in North Horr Sub-County, bringing together residents to reflect on ongoing Water Management and Soil and Watershed Conservation initiatives.

The forum aimed to review progress, track the status of previously agreed action plans, and share experiences with current interventions. The session also supported joint planning for upcoming soil conservation activities designed to promote sustainable natural resource management and strengthen community resilience in the face of climate adversities.
