PACIDA, Kenya PACIDA works with pastoralist communities in Kenya and Southern Ethiopia to end poverty, hunger and disease.

PACIDA was founded in 2008 by local scholars and development practitioners who were concerned with the huge and widening humanitarian needs, deepening vulnerabilities and huge development gap in the region. PACIDA pursues long-term and sustainable development in collaboration with the beneficiary communities, government, development actors and other stakeholders.Since inception, PACIDA has grown phenomenally over the years working cordially with local communities, partners, government agencies and other stakeholders to bring positive and much needed change in the lives of the local communities. PACIDA has grown and expanded in its programmes and areas of operation, making a difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in the local communities.

SAMBURU AND ISIOLO COUNTIES BEGIN REVIEW OF JOINT CONSERVATION MANAGEMENT PLAN

Earlier in the week, the County Governments of Isiolo and Samburu, with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and strategic partners including MID-P and PACIDA, began the review of the Samburu-Isiolo Conservation Area (SICA) Management Plan as they seek to develop a new 10-year plan covering the period 2026–2036.

Senior county officials from both counties attended the review and called for land-use planning to be integrated into the strategy. They emphasised that women and youth must be central to conservation efforts and committed to coordinating conservation activities to protect natural resources for future generations.

The review aims to strengthen conservation, improve land-use planning, and enhance the sustainable management of wildlife and natural resources across the two counties.

Through the RANGE program (Resilient Approaches in Natural Rangeland Ecosystems)—funded by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Kenya, through Mercy Corps. PACIDA recently participated in the development of the RANGE Programme Year 4 Workplan alongside other consortium partners in Isiolo County.

The process brought partners together to review Year 3 implementation progress, identify key lessons and priorities, and jointly plan Year 4 interventions to ensure alignment, complementarity, and effective implementation across the programme areas.

PACIDA facilitated a two-day Football Peace Tournament in Turbi Ward, North Horr Sub-County, under the Kenya Community Engagement and Resilience Programme (KCERP), funded by the European Union through the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF).

Four teams from Turbi, Uran, and Sololo wards participated in the tournament, providing an opportunity for young people and community members to interact, build friendships, and strengthen peaceful relationships.

The participating teams were:
Turbi FC – Turbi Ward
Turbi Legends – Turbi Ward
Qumbi FC – Uran Ward
Taqwa FC – Sololo Ward

Through football, participants and spectators promoted teamwork, tolerance, mutual respect, unity, and social cohesion, demonstrating the role of sport in peacebuilding and peaceful coexistence.

Local entrepreneurs from Forolle in Maikona Ward, North Horr Sub-County, Marsabit County, have completed a two-day entrepreneurship training aimed at helping them start, manage, and grow their businesses.

The training was facilitated by PACIDA through the Kenya Community Engagement and Resilience Programme (KCERP), funded by the European Union through the GCERF Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund

Participants learned practical skills in business planning, financial management, record-keeping, identifying market opportunities, and building good customer relationships.

The training also encouraged women and youth to take a more active role in economic activities and business ownership, helping them make the most of available opportunities within their communities.

PACIDA, through the Resilient Approaches in Natural Rangeland Ecosystem (RANGE) programme, funded by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Kenya, through Mercy Corps, and in collaboration with the Samburu County Government, conducted an ecological resilience design activity in Leperengwe, Baawa Ward, Samburu North Constituency, Samburu County, to restore degraded land.

Community sensitization sessions were held to raise awareness on Complaints and Response Mechanism (CARM) and safeguarding principles. Participants were sensitized on types of safeguarding and how to report concerns through established reporting channels, including the toll-free hotline. Sensitizing communities in CARM and safeguarding issues will help promote accountability and protection in program implementation.

PACIDA conducted a three-day participatory meeting in Damballa Fachana, Obbu Ward, Moyale Sub-county, Marsabit County, Kenya, to support the development of a community grazing plan and rangeland management by-laws under the SRAPLEA III Project.

The session engaged members of the Integrated Participatory Land Use and Rangeland Management Committees and local pastoralist community representatives.

Discussions focused on sustainable grazing, livestock movement, protection of grazing reserves, management of water points, environmental conservation, and responsible use of communal resources.

The process strengthened community ownership and participation while ensuring the by-laws reflect customary practices and address emerging rangeland management challenges.

The agreed grazing plan and by-laws are expected to reduce pressure on communal resources, minimize resource-based conflicts, improve pasture availability, and strengthen the resilience and livelihoods of pastoralist communities in border areas.

Under the Kenya Community Engagement and Resilience Programme (KCERP), funded by the European Union through the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF), PACIDA successfully conducted a community training session on peacebuilding and the prevention of violent extremism at Kukub Fami, Turbi Ward, North Horr Sub-County, Marsabit County.

The session brought together community members, youth, women, and local opinion leaders for meaningful discussions on peace, security, social cohesion, and community resilience.

The training aimed to strengthen participants’ knowledge and capacity to identify and address factors that may contribute to violent extremism, while promoting peaceful coexistence, tolerance, mutual understanding, and collective responsibility for maintaining peace and security within the community.

The Area Chief and Turbi Ward Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) were among the speakers who addressed participants during the session.

Earlier this week, the Kenya Institutional Strengthening Programme (KISP) team, accompanied by the Electoral Law and Governance Institute, Uraia Trust and the British High Commission, paid a courtesy visit to the PACIDA Isiolo Office. The meeting explored areas of synergy, collaboration and opportunities for joint engagement in governance, civic participation and community-led development.
