Bentah, a community monitor from Lokori/Kachodin, reflects on her journey since 2019:

“Our village is not the same. We have knowledge now. We follow up on projects and even stalled ones are starting to move.”

She recalls a time when communities were excluded from meetings and decision-making spaces. Today, with support and civic education, they are raising concerns, questioning allocations, and helping others understand how county processes work.

Whose labour matters? 🤔

Pastoralism is often misunderstood, but it is work. It is hard, skilled, climate-adaptive work.

From herding across harsh terrains to protecting livestock and sustaining livelihoods, pastoralist communities are constantly working, yet rarely acknowledged in labour conversations. Within this system, women carry an even heavier load, balancing unpaid care work with economic contribution that often goes unrecognized.

This year, 2026, the Year of Rangelands and Pastoralism, is a moment to shift that narrative.

It is time to recognize pastoralism as labour and to value the knowledge and resilience that sustain it. It is also time to make visible the work of women that holds households and communities together.

This Labour Day, we stand for greater recognition, respect, and investment in pastoralist livelihoods.

We spoke to community members during this week’s public participation forums in Turkana and a key concern stood out.

“We don’t need new projects. Focus on stalled and incomplete ones.”

We spoke to community members during this week’s public participation forums on the Turkana County budget proposals, and one message came through clearly: people want to be heard.

From Kanamkemer Ward, Turkana Central, Cecilia Kaleng is calling for transparency, inclusion, and accountability:

“Educate our people. Consult our people. Let everyone understand how things run in our county and wards.”

She highlights urgent concerns like water scarcity and questions why some projects are repeatedly funded but never completed.

Public participation must go beyond process. It must deliver real change.

Last week , our community Monitors from across Turkana came together for a two-day engagement to reflect on service delivery, governance, and accountability at the grassroots level.

From tracking ward-level budgets to sharing real experiences from their communities, the discussions highlighted both progress made and the gaps that still remain.

These conversations are critical in strengthening community voices and ensuring that development responds to the real needs of the people.

Recently, we, alongside the Institute of Public Finance, engaged Members of the County Assembly of Turkana in a training on budget analysis and public finance oversight at the FoLT Resource Centre.

As Turkana continues to face challenges in access to water, healthcare, education, and livelihoods, the role of the County Assembly in shaping and overseeing how public resources are used remains critical.

The engagement created space to reflect on key issues and discuss how public resources translate into tangible improvements in our people’s lives.

This engagement built on our continued work to strengthen participatory governance and accountability in Turkana, ensuring that communities are not only heard, but reflected in how decisions and budgets are made. 😊 🙌🏿
