On 9th April 2026, we had the privilege of hosting 64 Children of 1 Mother under the UNYOKE Foundation, accompanied by peace leaders from South Sudan. The delegation visited our offices for a learning and exchange visit aimed at understanding our work in peacebuilding and the various community-based activities we are implementing to create positive impact within our communities.

During the visit, we shared experiences, best practices, and lessons learned in promoting peace, community resilience, youth empowerment, and social cohesion. The engagement provided a valuable platform for cross-learning and strengthening regional solidarity in addressing challenges related to peace and community development.

Further to this, the delegation visited two of the self-help groups we support in Matondoni: Tarazak Women Group and Al Jannat Youth Group. The groups shared their experiences, success stories, and the different livelihood and empowerment activities they are undertaking within the community. The visitors had an opportunity to interact directly with the members and learn how community-led initiatives can contribute to peacebuilding, economic empowerment, and social transformation.

The visit strengthened mutual learning, networking, and collaboration opportunities between organizations working towards peace and sustainable community development. We continue to explore more opportunities for partnership and collaboration with various organizations to expand the impact of our programmes and initiatives.

Under the KCERP Project funded by the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund and Act Change Transform , Lamu Youth Alliance successfully conducted a 2 days market linkage training targeting 40 youth and women drawn from 8 livelihood groups (5 participants from each group).

The training brought together key stakeholders from both public and private sectors, including representatives from the Women Enterprise Fund, Kenya Forest Service, Kenya Fisheries Service, the County Government of Lamu (Ministry of Tourism and Trade), cooperative societies, local hoteliers, and Diamond Trust Bank. These stakeholders provided participants with practical knowledge, technical guidance, and access pathways to market opportunities and financial services.

A key milestone from the training was the successful facilitation of certification by the Women Enterprise Fund for participating groups. This certification positions the groups to access affordable financing starting from KES 100,000 and above, which will significantly strengthen and scale their livelihood activities.

Overall, the training enhanced participants’ capacity in market access, financial readiness, and business development, contributing to improved economic resilience among youth and women in Lamu County.

Under the KCERP Project, supported by the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund and Act Change Transform , a technical skills training was successfully conducted for three mangrove livelihood groups: Safari Swimmers, Tarazak Women Group, and Tafakur Group.

The training sessions were enriched by key stakeholders. A representative from the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit facilitated an awareness session on radicalization and violent extremism, equipping participants with knowledge on prevention and community resilience.

Additionally, a representative from the Kenya Forest Service delivered comprehensive technical training covering Community-Based Mangrove Restoration (CBMR), different types of mangrove species, as well as practical approaches to mangrove restoration and conservation. The sessions also included guidance on sustainable management practices.

To reinforce the theoretical knowledge, participants engaged in a field visit and practical demonstration at a degraded site in Njia ya Ndovu. During this session, they gained hands-on experience in monitoring mangrove ecosystems and conducting patrols to assess and address mangrove degradation.

Through the Triple Benefit Project supported by WWF, a series of community dialogues and awareness campaigns on mangrove protection and sustainable harvesting practices were successfully conducted across five villages in Lamu County: Kipungani, Matondoni, Mashundwani, Mokowe, and Manda.

The five-day activity brought together key stakeholders including representatives from the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), Kenya Fisheries Service (KeFS), the Lamu Community Forest Association (CFA), and local community members. Each village dialogue engaged approximately 15 participants, particularly in areas identified by KFS where cases of illegal mangrove cutting have been reported.

During the sessions, facilitators highlighted the ecological and economic importance of mangrove forests, emphasizing their role in protecting coastlines, supporting fisheries, and contributing to climate resilience. Stakeholders also shared insights on the Mangrove Harvest Plan 2025–2035, including the five designated harvesting blocks within Lamu County and the procedures for sustainable mangrove utilization.

Community members actively participated in the discussions, sharing their experiences on mangrove use, the challenges they face in restoration activities, and concerns around both legal and illegal harvesting practices. The dialogues created a platform for open engagement, allowing communities and institutions to jointly explore solutions for sustainable mangrove management.

The awareness campaign aimed to strengthen community knowledge on mangrove conservation while encouraging residents to adopt sustainable harvesting practices, increase participation in mangrove restoration activities, and take greater ownership in protecting these critical coastal ecosystems.
