Informal waste workers are at the heart of our cities’ recycling systems — yet remain largely invisible in policy, planning, and investment.
In Kisumu and many urban contexts, they recover up to 60% of recyclable materials, diverting significant volumes of waste from dumpsites and landfills while contributing directly to climate mitigation and public health.
Recognizing and supporting informal waste workers is not an act of goodwill — it is a strategic investment in climate justice, inclusive green economies, and sustainable urban systems.
A just transition must center those already doing the work!
