International Day for Women Human Rights Defenders
They defend dignity.
They defend justice.
They defend rights, often at great personal cost.
On this International Day for Women Human Rights Defenders, we honor the women who stand on the frontlines advancing the rights of women and girls, especially in hostile, unsafe and digitally violent environments.
As we mark Day 5 of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, we shine a light on the gendered and targeted risks women human rights defenders face including online harassment, surveillance, threats, sexualized attacks, smear campaigns and physical violence.
These attacks are not accidental. They are meant to silence women, push them out of public spaces and weaken movements for justice and equality.
At Kenya Ni Mimi, we say no more.
Silencing defenders is violence.
Attacking women’s leadership is violence.
Digital abuse against women activists is violence.
Our call to action:
🟠 Governments must protect women human rights defenders and hold perpetrators accountable.
🟠 Tech platforms must act to stop online harassment and gendered hate.
🟠 Communities must stand in solidarity, online and offline.
When women human rights defenders are protected, democracy survives.
When they are silenced, everyone loses.
