On Friday, Vijana Usawa CBO joined the Kisumu County Health Committee, partners including Women and Girls with Disability, HOVUC, NAYA KE, AYAN KE, Talanta Africa and Dreams Redefined to advance the Kisumu County SRH Bill, 2025. Together, we're championing the meaningful inclusion of youth with disabilities through Community Based Rehabilitation Model (CBR) ensuring autonomy, informed decision-making, and equitable access to SRHR.

Vijana Usawa, in partnership with HOVUC and WODGA, convened a breakfast meeting with the County Assembly Budget Committee, CBEF, and the Department of Finance and Economic Planning to present findings from a community-led analysis of the Budget Policy Statement. The analysis, conducted with youth from the community, focused on disability inclusion, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), and youth empowerment.

The engagement resulted in the development of a community memorandum calling for increased budget allocations and strengthened inclusion of persons with disabilities, adolescents, and young people in Kisumu County's development priorities.

Yesterday, as a continuation of the LAC Sub-County Disability TWG process, members successfully reviewed, validated, and adopted the Sub-County Disability TOR and Logframe with key amendments. The meeting, which brought together diverse stakeholders from Kisumu County led by the the leadership of NGAO, also resulted in the development of a one-year roadmap to advance disability inclusion and grassroots mainstreaming through the Community-Based Rehabilitation and Care (CBR&C) model.

Building Effective Network within the community that aligns with the community fabrics, owned and managed by the community from the basic level plays a very pertinent role in decentralizing disability issues to the basic unit levels. Today Vijana usawa brought together all the grass root stakeholders in Seme sub county for a home based disability rights dialogue through the BEN_MAP II project focusing on community based rehabilitation Model. The participatory dialogue that was officially opened by the Assistant Sub county Commissioner led to the development of Local disability Advisory Committee and linking this committee with the young voices to build a solid and lasting approach in addressing social inclusion and disability mainstreaming in Seme sub county.

Did you know that persons with disability and their caregivers equally have the rights and opportunities to participate in meaningful economic activities?. Today, Vijana usawa CBO, Seme forum for women with Disabilities and Jiinue program under Mastercard Foundation came together to demistify community perceptions and stigma on persons with Disabilities and participation in economic empowerment. The community sensitization brought together all persons with Disabilities in Seme sub county and their caregivers, taking them through business opportunities, assessing areas of interest, and grouping them for business start up kits. This is a key step toward shaping community narratives on persons with disabilities and meaningful involvement in economic empowerment. .

Vijana Usawa CBO and women and girls with Disabilities in Action held a 2 day joint workshop with the Kisumu county Local Advisory Committee(LAC), bringing together county commissioner's representatives, Department of Health, Education, Youth, Social service, director of children services, NCPWD, sub county administrators, chiefs, CHAS,SCHSFPs, youth with Disabilities and caregivers.
Under the BEN MAP II Project, the engagements focused on; promoting positive attitude & shifting harmful norms on disability, strengthening inclusion and access for children and youth with Disabilities, enhancing coordination between community structures & government systems and building sustainable referral pathways and accountability.
Grounded in community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Model, the workshop emphasized harmonization across sectors , community ownership and practical action to remove socio- cultural barriers.
