Our goal is to increase awareness on Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), promote voluntary genotype screening among young people, and generate critical data that will support evidence-based advocacy and policy reform on genetic screening in Kenya.

One of the highlights of the day was a highly educative and emotionally moving performance by the JOOUST Drama Team, which boldly challenged the long-held myth that sickle cell disease is caused by witchcraft. Through drama and storytelling, they emphasized the importance of seeking proper medical care instead of relying on traditional misconceptions and harmful stigma.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the leadership of JOOUST, especially ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ณ. ๐—š๐—ฒ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐—”๐˜†๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ผ, for graciously hosting the event and for the tremendous mobilization that saw students turn up overwhelmingly for voluntary screening.

We are matching on with the initiative to all universities in Western Kenya , we are breaking stigma, promoting informed choices, and building a healthier future through awareness, science, and community action.

The training equipped participants with critical knowledge on malaria programming, strengthened our understanding of the vital role Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) play in community representation, and provided deep insights into Community-Led Monitoring (CLM) as a tool for driving accountability and improving health outcomes.

We also actively contributed to developing CSO county action plans and identifying key advocacy priorities that will shape future interventions.

There is an urgent need for targeted, inclusive interventions that address their unique health risks and challenges.

Today marked a powerful step toward dignity, health, and empowerment for girls living with sickle cell disease in Kisumu Central.

In a collaborative effort, Tumaini Sickle cell Organization -TSCO , Together for Better , ๐„๐ช๐ฎ๐š๐ญ๐จ๐ซ ๐‘๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐ ๐“๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž, and the Kenya Red Cross Society came together to support over 50 girls by distributing free reusable sanitary pads, a sustainable solution designed with 100% organic materials, free from chemicals and plastics, and reusable for up to two years.

Beyond distribution, the initiative created a safe and empowering space for learning. ๐ƒ๐ซ. ๐€๐ซ๐ฎ๐ง๐š from Together For Better Foundation led an engaging and insightful session on ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐š๐ฅ ๐ก๐ž๐š๐ฅ๐ญ๐ก ๐ฆ๐š๐ง๐š๐ ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ, equipping the girls with practical knowledge on:

* Understanding their menstrual cycle
* Maintaining hygiene while using reusable products
* Managing menstrual pain naturally without over-reliance on painkillers

The session also included live demonstrations on the proper use, cleaning, and care of the reusable pads, ensuring every participant left confident and informed.

For girls living with sickle cell disease, menstrual health management can be particularly challenging due to pain crises and limited access to safe menstrual products. This initiative not only addressed a critical health need but also restored dignity, boosted confidence, and promoted environmentally sustainable practices.

At Tumaini Sickle Cell Organization, we believe that no girl should miss school, feel ashamed, or risk her health because of her period. Todayโ€™s impact is a testament to what partnerships can achieve when we come together for a shared purpose.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all partners and volunteers who made this day possible. Together, we are not just meeting immediate needsโ€”we are building a future where every girl can thrive with dignity and good health.

As Tumaini, our contribution focused on what matters deeply to us โ€” prevention. We conducted free sickle cell genotype screening for members of the public, empowering individuals and families with critical knowledge about their health status. This effort is a key step in strengthening primary prevention strategies aimed at reducing the burden of sickle cell disease in Kenya.

Through early screening and awareness, we can help prevent new cases, support informed decision-making, and ultimately build healthier futures for generations to come.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all partners who made this day a success and to the community members who showed up, participated, and took charge of their health.

Together, we are not just treating illness โ€” we are preventing it. ๐Ÿ’™
