TURNING IDEAS INTO SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS

Economic empowerment is more than learning how to start a business—it is about building the knowledge, confidence and opportunities needed to create sustainable livelihoods.

In collaboration with Compassion International, we recently supported caregivers in Mnarani through a Business Mentorship and Training session, providing practical knowledge and skills on how to start, improve and manage their businesses.

From identifying viable business opportunities to understanding basic business management, financial planning and sustainability, the caregivers were encouraged to think beyond simply starting a business and focus on building one that can grow and support their families over time.

One of the highlights of the session was seeing participants transform their ideas into practical and sustainable business plans. With their plans in hand, alongside newfound knowledge and confidence, they are now looking forward to taking the next step—turning their ideas into businesses and their businesses into sustainable sources of livelihood.

This is what economic empowerment looks like: equipping people with the knowledge, skills and confidence to create opportunities for themselves and build a more secure future for their families.

We look forward to seeing these ideas grow, businesses take shape and livelihoods strengthened!

Happy Teachers’ Day to everyone shaping lives through education, mentorship and learning!

Today, we celebrate every person who plays a role in shaping the lives of learners both inside and outside the classroom.

Teaching is more than delivering lessons. It is inspiring curiosity, nurturing talent, building confidence, sharing wisdom, creating safe spaces, and helping young people believe in what is possible.

To every teacher who stays after class to explain one more time, every mentor who listens, every coach who teaches beyond the game, every community educator who creates learning opportunities, and every role model who leads by example, thank you for helping shape the next generation.

We believe learning happens everywhere, and every young person deserves opportunities to learn, grow, discover their talents, and thrive.

Today, we honor you for being part of that journey.

Building Africa’s Business Events Ecosystem: Reflections from the Arica MICE Summit 2026

We were privileged to take part in the just concluded Africa MICE Summit 2026, held at Tembo International Conference in Mombasa, under the theme: “Building Africa’s Business Events Ecosystem for Trade, Investment & Innovation.”

The summit brought together investors, entrepreneurs, exhibitors, and participants from across Africa and beyond to exchange ideas, share experiences, and explore opportunities for strengthening Africa’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) ecosystem.

For us at Tuungane, the conversations went beyond events. They challenged us to think about how business events can contribute to meaningful economic and social impact within communities, create opportunities for young people and entrepreneurs, and help tell Africa’s stories to the world.

💡 Some of our key takeaways:

🔹 Successful events are built around people. The connections, experiences and opportunities created for people are at the heart of any meaningful event.

🔹 Africa must move from potential to action. We are not only talking about what Africa can become—we are increasingly seeing the importance of Africa doing, creating and leading.

🔹 Impact must reach communities. As we grow Africa’s business events ecosystem, we must ensure that the benefits translate into meaningful opportunities and impact at community level.

🔹 Africa has stories to tell. Our diverse cultures, innovations, people and communities are part of the story we must continue sharing with the world.

🔹 Collaboration is key. Building a stronger, more inclusive and sustainable MICE economy requires partnerships across sectors, countries, communities and industries.

We leave the summit inspired by the possibilities that emerge when people, ideas, innovation and collaboration come together.

At Tuungane, we look forward to continuing to explore how our work with young people, communities, sport, art and social development can contribute to Africa’s growing ecosystem of opportunities and impact.

Africa is not just a destination of potential. Africa is a continent of people doing, creating, innovating and shaping the future.

From Takaungu, to Mwangea, and back to Chonyi… what a journey!

We were pleased to join fellow youth-led and women-led organizations within Kilifi county, key stakeholders and community members for the COSME Project Close-Out Forums, organized by Plan International Kenya.

What stood out most during the forums were the happy faces of project participants, the powerful stories of transformation and the pride communities have in the initiatives they have built and continue to nurture.
The most encouraging part was hearing about the strategies already in place to sustain these initiatives beyond the project close-out.

This was a beautiful reminder that sustainable development is not simply about what happens during a project period, but about what communities are able and willing to carry forward.

It has been an incredible one year ++ implementing the Roots & Shoots project under COSME, alongside our conservation initiative with farmers in Chonyi and one key lesson we take with us is that sustainable initiatives create lasting impact. COSME may be coming to a close, but for the young people, women and communities involved, this is not an ending. It is another beginning.

We carry with us the ideas, skills, networks, relationships and initiatives that continue to grow.

Here’s to communities that own their change and keep the momentum going!

New Month. New Leadership. New Milestone!

We are starting October on a high note!

Tuungane CBO proudly celebrates the election of Ann Waithera Mwangi, one of our dedicated staff members, as the National Chairperson for Economic Empowerment & Livelihoods – Kenya under the Global Alliance for Communities (GAC).

From serving as the Coast Region Economic Empowerment Thematic Lead Staff, Ann now takes on a national leadership role, bringing with her the experience, passion and commitment to advancing economic empowerment and sustainable livelihoods for communities.

This is a moment of pride for us and the Coast region, and a testament to the power of committed young leaders to create change beyond their communities.

Congratulations, Ann! We are proud to see you rise, lead and represent. Here’s to new beginnings, new responsibilities and new possibilities this October!

New month. New role. New level of impact.

Ending September with a little more care, connection and reflection.

We were glad to take part in a 3-day Psychosocial Forum for Toolkit Organizers under Peace Brigades International - Kenya Project. A safe space to pause, reconnect and reflect on our wellbeing.

The sessions explored burnout and secondary trauma, stress and its impact on the body, healthy boundaries, grounding and coping techniques, Psychological First Aid, peer support, collective care and safety planning.

Beyond the learning, we also made space for laughter, dance, games, creativity and simply enjoying each other’s company. A reminder that rest and joy are part of the journey too.

As we close the month of September, we are carrying forward renewed energy, practical tools and a stronger commitment to collective care as we prepare for the final quarter of the year.

Because caring for ourselves and one another helps us sustain the work that matters.

Saturday is for Soccer!

For our girls and young women in Mtomondoni, Kilifi South, and Kibarani, Kilifi North, the football pitch is becoming much more than a place to play.

It is a space to connect, build friendships, learn, express themselves and grow with the support of coaches, mentors and fellow players. Through these sessions, girls and young women have opportunities to build confidence, develop skills and have meaningful conversations about issues that affect their lives.

As we mark World Contraception Day, we are reminded of the importance of ensuring that young people have access to accurate information, supportive spaces and the confidence to make informed decisions about their health, relationships and futures.

Sometimes, creating change starts with simply creating a space where young people feel safe enough to ask questions, learn and be heard.

And that is why we keep showing up. One training session, one conversation and one young woman at a time.

On this International Day of Peace, we pause to reflect on the Murals for Peace initiative.

Peace is not only something we talk about. It is something we create, nurture and express in our homes, our communities and in the spaces we share.

Through the Murals for Peace initiative, we collaborated with community members and partners within Kilifi to use art as a powerful tool for peacebuilding, dialogue and community expression. Together, we collaboratively created five murals in public spaces across Shella, Ganda, Kibarani, Tezo and Mnarani wards, within Malindi and Kilifi North Sub-counties of Kilifi County.

Each mural became a shared space for reflection, conversation and a visual reminder of the kind of communities we want to build; where diversity is embraced, young people have a voice, and peaceful coexistence is a collective responsibility.

We are grateful to Peace Brigades International - Kenya Project for supporting this initiative and to the Toolkit organizers, the artist, young people, community members and partners who contributed their creativity, time and ideas.

On this International Day of Peace, we celebrate these murals as expressions of hope, unity and our collective commitment to building peaceful communities.
