Happy International Day of Play!

This year’s theme, "Protect Play, Protect Childhood," emphasizes that happy and healthy childhoods are built on play and highlights the importance of safeguarding children's time, space, and freedom to engage in play.

At Tuungane CBO, we believe that play goes beyond just having fun. It is a powerful tool for learning, growth, and transformation. Through sports and arts, we continue to create safe and inclusive spaces where young people can build confidence, nurture creativity, develop leadership skills, and strengthen their physical, social, and emotional well-being.

Today, we celebrate the joy, imagination, and endless possibilities that emerge when children are free to play. By protecting play, we are protecting childhood and investing in healthier, happier, and more empowered communities for generations to come.

From World Environment Day to World Ocean Day, our commitment to protecting the planet continues....!

Just days after joining hands with partners to plant trees and champion climate action during World Environment Day, we were proud to be part of the World Ocean Day celebrations at Vidazini Beach, Kilifi.

Under the theme "One Ocean, One Climate, One Future — Together," we joined the Kenya Scouts Association and other climate action organizations in a beach clean-up exercise, removing plastic waste and other debris that threaten marine ecosystems and coastal livelihoods.

Beyond the clean-up, the event provided an opportunity to learn, reflect, and raise awareness about ocean conservation, responsible waste management, and the role each of us plays in protecting life below water and our environment in general.

Whether restoring our landscapes through tree planting or safeguarding our oceans from pollution, every action matters. The health of our environment and our oceans is interconnected, and together we can create a more resilient and sustainable future for generations to come.

Let us continue to be stewards of the environment both on land and at sea.

World Environment Day 2026!!

We joined the Kilifi Department of Water, Environment, Climate Change & Forestry, alongside fellow Civil Society Organizations and community members, in commemorating World Environment Day at Pwani University under the theme: "A Global Call for Climate Action."

As part of this important day, we collectively planted 5,000 exotic and fruit trees, contributing to environmental conservation, biodiversity restoration, and strengthening climate resilience within our communities.

Through such collective action, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting our environment and addressing the impacts of climate change at the local level as we continue to invest in cleaner air, healthier ecosystems, sustainable livelihoods, and a greener future for generations to come.

We are proud to stand alongside partners who are championing environmental stewardship and inspiring communities to take action for our planet.

IT'S A WRAP!

As we conclude our Adopt a Tree Initiative during the week in celebration of World Environment Day, we are proud to reflect on the impact we have made together.

Over the week, we visited three schools within Kilifi North Sub-county and planted 505 tree seedlings alongside learners and Environment Club members. Beyond tree planting, we conducted climate education sessions to raise awareness on climate change, environmental conservation, and the critical role young people play in protecting our planet.

Our work does not end here. Through continued mentorship and regular monitoring, we will support Environment Clubs to nurture and care for their adopted trees, ensuring that today's actions create lasting environmental impact for future generations.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all our partners who made this initiative a success; Kenya forest service (KFS) -Kilifi and Nacada Kenya for providing tree seedlings, Elijah Masokano from the Global Initiative for Nature Improvement GINI for supporting the development of the Adopt a Tree Handbook for Environment Club members and mentors.
We also extend our gratitude to the school administrators, teachers, mentors, volunteers, and learners for their commitment to creating a greener and more sustainable future.

World Environment Week 2026

As part of our commitment to environmental conservation and climate action, we are proud to join the Movement spearheaded by the Society for Ecological Restoration in conjunction with the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, UN Environment Programme, and Azerbaijan Baku.

This week, we will implement the Adopt a Tree Initiative in three schools within Kilifi North Sub-County. Through this initiative, each Environment Club member will adopt and nurture a tree, taking responsibility for its growth and care.

The program will also feature climate action sensitization sessions to equip students with knowledge on environmental conservation, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable practices. Through mentorship and hands-on action, we are nurturing a new generation of environmental champions committed to protecting our planet.

Together, we can make a difference; one tree, one learner, and one community at a time.

Empowering Creativity Through Skills and Opportunity!

We are grateful for the recent collaboration with Sandbox Ubuntu, which provided an invaluable capacity-building opportunity for the Young Women in our Youth Voice and Empowerment Project.

Through a 3-day Business Development Skills Training, aspiring fashion designers gained practical knowledge on transforming their creativity into sustainable businesses. The training covered key areas including creation and production, understanding the fashion business, analyzing their work, deciding what to create, planning and budgeting, branding, product protection, distribution, and business marketing.

Beyond the classroom, participants had the exciting opportunity to showcase and exhibit their products, building confidence in their talents while receiving valuable exposure for their brands.

A big thank you to Sandbox Ubuntu for investing in the dreams and aspirations of these young creatives. Empowering young people with skills, knowledge, and opportunities is key to unlocking their potential and creating pathways to economic independence.

Healthy Minds. Stronger People. Thriving Communities.

Mental Health Awareness Month may be ending, but the conversation on mental health continues. Mental wellbeing shapes how we work, lead, build relationships, and serve our communities every day.

During our recent quarterly staff meeting, the team reflected on mental wellbeing and work-life balance, sharing what keeps us grounded and resilient in both work and life.

We are also proud to celebrate two staff members from our Human Rights Advocacy and Access to Justice Department who recently completed a Psychosocial Training as ToTs powered by the Peace Brigades International - Kenya Project.
Through practical sessions on self-awareness, stress management, trauma and collective care, they are now better equipped to continue facilitating community dialogues and promote psychosocial wellbeing at the grassroots level.

As May comes to a close, we are reminded that while mental health awareness month ends, the responsibility to care for ourselves and each other continues. Every conversation, every act of support, and every safe space created contributes to healthier and stronger communities.
