Candlelight for Empowerment is a women-led CBO in Kilifi, Kenya, working to end violence against children and adolescents through child safeguarding, girls’ empowerment, education, SRHR, and household economic strengthening. Through our organization, vulnerable children are becoming empowered and educated, realizing their dreams and beginning to break the cycle of poverty. Candle Light for Empowerment Kenya has a unique position of being deeply rooted within the community, ready to tackle challenges and create sustainable impact. We are People of Action, ready to turn our ideas and vision into lasting change, by creating opportunities, supporting those who need it most and transforming their lives. Our Four Thematic Areas:

Opening New Digital Pathways for Teen Mothers 💻🌱

Twenty teen mothers. Three months. New skills. New possibilities.

This week, Candlelight expanded our Teen Mothers Empowerment Programme to include digital skills training. For the next three months, 20 teen mothers will build practical computer and digital skills alongside the baking and livelihood skills they are already developing.

In an increasingly digital world, digital skills are no longer a luxury. They are a pathway to education, information, employment, entrepreneurship, services and economic opportunity. By adding digital skills to our livelihood training, we are equipping teen mothers with a broader set of tools to navigate opportunities and strengthen their economic independence.

For us, this is about more than learning to use a computer. It is about expanding choices. It is about helping a teen mother see possibilities beyond the circumstances that may have limited her, while giving her practical skills to pursue them.

At Candlelight, we believe empowerment means giving girls and young women the skills, confidence and opportunities to shape their own futures.

These 20 young women have started that journey and we are excited to walk alongside them over the next three months.

Beyond Project Funding 🤝

What if partnership was not only about funding a project but also about strengthening the organization behind the impact?

That is what our partnership with Shining Hope for Communities means to us.

As SHOFCO supports our Youth Voice Project, they are also investing in Candlelight’s institutional growth through a series of capacity strengthening trainings. We are strengthening our systems, leadership, governance and organizational capacity so that Candlelight can deliver stronger programmes, grow sustainably and create greater impact.

For us, this is an investment in the future.

Because strong communities need strong local organizations behind them. Organizations that are equipped to lead, learn, adapt, build partnerships and remain accountable to the people they serve.

We are learning, we are strengthening and we are growing.

And with every step, we are building a stronger Candlelight and increasing our ability to create lasting change for young people, girls, women and the communities we serve.

Five years ago, Children's rights and Violence Prevention Fund made a bet on a small, women-led team in Kilifi. Last week, they came back to see what that bet has grown into. 🌱❤️

We were delighted to welcome the CRVPF team to Kilifi PVAC cluster continuing a partnership that has grown for more than five years.

We took them into the community to one of our partner schools and to a parent group we work with. Real conversations with the children, parents, teachers and community members at the heart of our work.

CRVPF's support for our violence prevention work has been part of that story from early on helping us strengthen families, schools and communities so children and young people can learn, grow and thrive in safety.

The visit gave us space to reflect on how far we have come, celebrate the progress and listen and learn from communities about what's next.

For us, partnership means walking alongside communities not just supporting programmes, but building solutions together.

We are grateful to CRVPF for believing in locally led solutions and for continuing to walk with Candlelight and the communities we serve. ❤️

A tray of muffins may seem like a small achievement.

Strong organizations create lasting impact.

At Candlelight for Empowerment CBO, we believe meaningful partnerships go beyond financial support. While funding enables us to implement programmes, investments in organizational strengthening enable us to improve our effectiveness, strengthen our systems and deliver sustainable impact for the communities we serve.

We were delighted to welcome the team from the Children's rights and Violence Prevention Fund to Candlelight. Their visit was more than a programme review. It created an opportunity for honest conversations, shared learning and meaningful reflection on how we can continue strengthening our leadership, governance, financial stewardship, safeguarding and organizational systems.

The engagement reaffirmed that investing in local organizations is not only about supporting programmes but also about strengthening the institutions that deliver them. Every lesson learned and every conversation shared brings us one step closer to creating greater impact for children, young people, women and communities.

We sincerely appreciate CRVPF for investing not only in our programmes but also in our organizational growth, learning and long-term sustainability. Partnerships like these strengthen our ability to create lasting change where it matters most.

Just two weeks in... and the transformation is already visible. 💚

The smiles are brighter. The confidence is growing. The questions keep coming.

Over the past two weeks, the girls in our Covering with Love Initiative have shown an incredible hunger to learn. They are asking thoughtful questions, sharing their experiences, supporting one another and embracing every opportunity to grow.

Every smile tells a story of hope. Every question reflects curiosity. Every session reminds us that when girls are given a safe space to learn, they begin to see their own potential.

This is why we do what we do and we are only getting started.

Together, we are raising a generation of confident, informed and empowered girls.

✨ One opportunity can change a life. One journey can change a generation. Today, that journey begins. 💚

We are excited to share that the first cohort of our Covering with Love: Teen Mothers Empowerment Initiative officially began last week!

This is more than the start of a project. It is the beginning of a journey where vulnerable teen mothers are gaining the skills, confidence and support they need to build brighter futures for themselves and their children.

Through Covering with Love, participants will receive entrepreneurship training, positive parenting and sexual and reproductive health education. By combining livelihood opportunities with life skills, we are equipping teen mothers to build sustainable incomes, strengthen their families and create lasting change in their communities.

At Candlelight for Empowerment CBO, we believe every teen mother deserves the opportunity to rewrite her story with hope, dignity and purpose. We are honored to walk alongside this incredible first cohort as they learn, grow and unlock their full potential.

We can't wait to celebrate the businesses they will build, the families they will strengthen and the dreams they will achieve.

📍 Kigali, Rwanda | Days 2–4 of the New African Fund Skills Workshop

Strong organizations create lasting impact.

Over the past three days, we deepened our understanding of what it takes to build a resilient and sustainable grassroots organization. The sessions challenged us to think beyond programme delivery and focus on strengthening the systems that make lasting impact possible.

We explored ways to optimize our organizational tech stack, strengthen donor stewardship through the donor lifecycle, grow local fundraising and recurring donations, improve donor retention and build a consistent organizational brand and communication strategy. We also reflected on the importance of preventing workplace sexual violence and fostering safe, respectful and inclusive workplaces.

We return home inspired, equipped with practical tools and more committed than ever to strengthening Candlelight for Empowerment CBO so we can better serve children, adolescents, women and the communities we work alongside.

A heartfelt thank you to the New African Fund for investing in grassroots organizations and empowering local leaders to build stronger, more sustainable institutions.
