Candlelight for Empowerment is a women-led CBO in Kilifi, Kenya, working to end violence against children and adolescents through child safeguarding, girls’ empowerment, education, SRHR, and household economic strengthening. Look closely at these smiles.

They are more than smiles after a successful baking session. They are the smiles of young women discovering that they can learn a skill, create something of value and begin building a future for themselves and their children.

A tray of muffins may seem like a small achievement.

But behind it is a bigger story:

-A skill learned.
-Confidence rebuilt.
-A possibility discovered.
-A future beginning to take shape.

We believe supporting teen mothers means looking beyond immediate needs. It means creating opportunities that strengthen their skills, agency and economic independence while addressing the realities that can keep young mothers trapped in vulnerability.

Strong organizations create lasting impact.

At Candlelight for Empowerment CBO, we believe meaningful partnerships go beyond financial support. While funding enables us to implement programmes, investments in organizational strengthening enable us to improve our effectiveness, strengthen our systems and deliver sustainable impact for the communities we serve.

We were delighted to welcome the team from the Children's rights and Violence Prevention Fund to Candlelight. Their visit was more than a programme review. It created an opportunity for honest conversations, shared learning and meaningful reflection on how we can continue strengthening our leadership, governance, financial stewardship, safeguarding and organizational systems.

The engagement reaffirmed that investing in local organizations is not only about supporting programmes but also about strengthening the institutions that deliver them. Every lesson learned and every conversation shared brings us one step closer to creating greater impact for children, young people, women and communities.

We sincerely appreciate CRVPF for investing not only in our programmes but also in our organizational growth, learning and long-term sustainability. Partnerships like these strengthen our ability to create lasting change where it matters most.

We are equally grateful to our implementing partners KAARC and the Strategic Community Based Organization (SCBO) for their collaboration in implementation of the PVAC project. Together, we are preventing violence, strengthening protective systems and creating safe, inclusive and resilient communities where children, young people and women can thrive.

Just two weeks in... and the transformation is already visible. 💚

The smiles are brighter. The confidence is growing. The questions keep coming.

Over the past two weeks, the girls in our Covering with Love Initiative have shown an incredible hunger to learn. They are asking thoughtful questions, sharing their experiences, supporting one another and embracing every opportunity to grow.

Every smile tells a story of hope. Every question reflects curiosity. Every session reminds us that when girls are given a safe space to learn, they begin to see their own potential.

This is why we do what we do and we are only getting started.

Together, we are raising a generation of confident, informed and empowered girls.

✨ One opportunity can change a life. One journey can change a generation. Today, that journey begins. 💚

We are excited to share that the first cohort of our Covering with Love: Teen Mothers Empowerment Initiative officially began last week!

This is more than the start of a project. It is the beginning of a journey where vulnerable teen mothers are gaining the skills, confidence and support they need to build brighter futures for themselves and their children.

Through Covering with Love, participants will receive entrepreneurship training, positive parenting and sexual and reproductive health education. By combining livelihood opportunities with life skills, we are equipping teen mothers to build sustainable incomes, strengthen their families and create lasting change in their communities.

At Candlelight for Empowerment CBO, we believe every teen mother deserves the opportunity to rewrite her story with hope, dignity and purpose. We are honored to walk alongside this incredible first cohort as they learn, grow and unlock their full potential.

We can't wait to celebrate the businesses they will build, the families they will strengthen and the dreams they will achieve.

📍 Kigali, Rwanda | Days 2–4 of the New African Fund Skills Workshop

Strong organizations create lasting impact.

Over the past three days, we deepened our understanding of what it takes to build a resilient and sustainable grassroots organization. The sessions challenged us to think beyond programme delivery and focus on strengthening the systems that make lasting impact possible.

We explored ways to optimize our organizational tech stack, strengthen donor stewardship through the donor lifecycle, grow local fundraising and recurring donations, improve donor retention and build a consistent organizational brand and communication strategy. We also reflected on the importance of preventing workplace sexual violence and fostering safe, respectful and inclusive workplaces.

We return home inspired, equipped with practical tools and more committed than ever to strengthening Candlelight for Empowerment CBO so we can better serve children, adolescents, women and the communities we work alongside.

A heartfelt thank you to the New African Fund for investing in grassroots organizations and empowering local leaders to build stronger, more sustainable institutions.

📍 Kigali, Rwanda | Day 1 of the New Africa Skills Workshop

How do grassroots organizations grow their impact and sustainability?

That was the focus of our first day of learning with fellow changemakers from across Africa.

We explored how to communicate our mission through compelling elevator pitches, strengthen nonprofit financial management and intentionally build networks that open doors to new opportunities, partnerships and solutions.

One lesson stood out: impact alone is not enough. Organizations must be able to clearly tell their story, manage resources with excellence and cultivate relationships that help turn vision into reality.

We are deeply grateful to New Africa Fund for investing in the capacity of local organizations. Your support goes far beyond funding, you are a trusted partner, equipping us with the skills, connections and confidence needed to create lasting change.

We are excited to bring these lessons home as we continue working to prevent violence, strengthen families and create opportunities for children, adolescents, youth and women in our communities.

Confidence. Growth. Readiness. This is how our learners returned to school this term.

They did not return as they left a few weeks ago. They are more confident better prepared and eager to learn.

During the April break Candlelight for Empowerment brought together our sponsored learners at the office for an end of term evaluation. This provided an opportunity to understand their academic progress assess their wellbeing at home identify areas where additional support is needed and address any child protection concerns.

We also created space for growth beyond academics. Through enrichment trainings, play based learning, role play storytelling and guided peer discussions learners strengthened their confidence practiced real life decision making as well as deepened their sense of voice and identity.

At Candlelight we are not only focused on academic performance we are committed to nurturing resilient empowered and well rounded young people.

Because of your support, we have successfully raised funds to empower teen mothers and help them build sustainable livelihoods.

We did not just guess what they need, we asked them.

After in-depth conversations with the young mothers, one skill stood out above the rest: baking. It’s practical, in demand and something they’re excited to learn and turn into income.

So we are starting there.

Now, we are looking for a passionate Baking Expert and a committed Intern to train and mentor these young women as they take their first steps into business.

This is more than a role, it’s a chance to create real impact.
