Today, Friends of Ondiri Wetland proudly joined the rest of Kenya and the global conservation community in marking World Migratory Bird Day 2026 and participating in the Global Big Day 2026 under the theme: “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter.”

The day brought together passionate birders, conservationists, nature lovers, and citizen scientists committed to protecting birdlife and promoting biodiversity conservation. Through bird monitoring and data collection using the eBird Mobile App, our team successfully recorded an impressive 56 bird species at Ondiri Wetland, reaffirming the wetland’s importance as a critical habitat for both resident and migratory birds.

Among the most remarkable and rare sightings of the day were the African Water Rail (recorded and photographed), Grey Crowned Crane, Hunter’s Cisticola (recorded and photographed), White-faced Whistling Duck, Cinnamon Bracken Warbler, Malachite Kingfisher, and the beautiful Golden-winged Sunbird. These sightings highlight the incredible ecological richness and conservation value of Ondiri Wetland.

Other notable species recorded included the African Yellow Warbler, Yellow-billed Duck, Klaas's Cuckoo, Common Moorhen, Black Crake, Little Grebe, Reed Cormorant, Sacred Ibis, Hadada Ibis, Augur Buzzard, Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater, Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird, African Paradise Flycatcher, Red-faced Cisticola, Lesser Swamp Warbler, Kikuyu White-eye, Bronze Sunbird, Spectacled Weaver, Pin-tailed Whydah, African Citril, Streaky Seedeater, and many more.

This exercise not only contributes to global bird conservation data but also strengthens awareness on the urgent need to protect wetlands and natural ecosystems for future generations.

Ondiri Wetland continues to stand as a beacon of environmental conservation, biodiversity protection, climate resilience, and ecological education in Kenya.

We sincerely appreciate all the birders, volunteers, partners, and conservation champions who participated and made today’s activity a success.

Together, every bird counts. Every observation matters. Every action for nature makes a difference.

Today, we were honoured to host the Environmental Club members from St. Hannah’s Girls’ High School at the beautiful Ondiri Wetland for an exciting and impactful environmental learning experience.

The students had an amazing time exploring Kenya’s only quaking bog and what many visitors proudly call “the biggest natural trampoline in Kenya” during our famous Peat Bog Tour. The excitement, laughter, curiosity and love for nature made the day truly memorable.

The learners also enjoyed:

○ A guided educational tour of the wetland ecosystem
○ A tree planting and conservation learning session
○ Citizen Science activities and biodiversity observation
○ A visit to our growing Botanic Garden
○ Bird and nature appreciation sessions
○ Environmental education discussions focused on conservation and climate action
○ Tree growing activity

At Friends of Ondiri Wetland Kenya, we strongly believe that young people are the future custodians of our environment. Through Environmental Clubs and our Citizen Science Docket, students get an opportunity to participate directly in conservation, research, biodiversity monitoring and practical climate action.

We encourage more schools, institutions and learning groups to visit Ondiri Wetland for an unforgettable outdoor classroom experience that combines education, adventure, conservation and fun.

Together, let us nurture a generation that values nature, protects wetlands and champions environmental sustainability for a greener Kenya.

Yesterday, we had a fruitful engagement with the representatives of NDC Course 28–2025/26, who have been instrumental in supporting tree-growing activities in line with the Government’s 15 Billion Tree Growing Initiative.

The cohort planted over 2,000 trees on October 10, 2025, along the Alliance High School stretch, mainly indigenous species, and the survival rate currently stands at an impressive 80%.

Friends of Ondiri Wetland Kenya (FOWK) is proud of this partnership and the impact it continues to create towards environmental conservation and climate action.

We look forward to planting even more trees this May as the current cohort completes its study course.
