ROCK: Reaching Out with Compassion in Kibera

ROCK: Reaching Out with Compassion in Kibera R.O.C.K 's objective is to promote the living standard of young people in Kibera by empowering them w This is part of our scholarship program. Asante Sana!

We reach out directly to at risk children who drop out of school or cannot afford school.Instead of leading a life of crime or drugs, we mentor, tutor and empower them to go back to school. We provide the funds to support their education and continue to work with them even as they return to school. Currently one individual provides the funds for the school fees. We also have children on a scholars

hip due to their scholastic achievements. Presently we have over 60 children in our program with 17 children in the scholarship program. Every Saturday or Sunday we have Math and Science Tutoring sessions either at Prestige food court or in Kibera at our local community center. Look for weekly updates on the group location. We need your help with this!! If your interested to help with tutoring or donating for school fees please contact us directly.

Girls in Kibera face multifaceted challenges due to their environment and family struggles. The slum environment often leads to peer pressure, resulting in early marriages, teenage pregnancies, and school dropouts. Additionally, financial constraints within families make it difficult for girls to access essential personal items like sanitary pads.

At ROCK KENYA, we are dedicated to overcoming these obstacles by providing mentorship and access to sanitary pads and other basic necessities. We are proud to report that the girls we supported in previous years have become mentors to our current group of girls. This serves as both an inspiration for us to continue our work and a testament to the direct impact of our program.

Since our early days, we have found out that some of our bright learners failed their school exams not due to insufficient preparation but to sitting for exams with empty stomachs. Furthermore, some of our learners struggled to concentrate in class due to skipped meal sessions at home. As a result, we are committed to supporting our learners by establishing a robust feeding program that ensures they have access to balanced meals during the school holidays and on weekends at our facility in Kibera.

Our feeding program has recently expanded to include junior high school students, for whom we cover school meal fees. Our goal is to further grow the program by providing daily food baskets to learners whose families struggle to consistently provide supper and/or breakfast.

You can support us in realizing this dream by donating via https://rockkenya.org/index.php/donate/

At ROCK KENYA, we value the holistic development of our learners. In addition to excellent academic performance, we foster the personal development of our learners through mentorship programs. Recently, we conducted concurrent boys' and girls' programs, led by our founder, Dan, alongside our university graduate ladies. The programs were tailored to support our learners in maneuvering their daily challenges involving accountability, responsibility, professionalism, and leadership.

We envision a balanced society that empowers both genders, ensuring that ladies are empowered to prosper in their careers and personal endeavors while their male counterparts are equipped to champion and protect these efforts, fostering mutual respect without feeling threatened.

These last few years have been challenging for so many of us especially our team at ROCK but through it all we persevered and continued our amazing program in Kibera.Dan, our founder, works around the clock 7 days a week to assure nobody is left behind, we are so grateful for his leadership as he has worked so hard to keep ROCK going through all the challenges.

However funds have been limited as we haven't had any donations in some time. We are humbly asking you this to consider ROCK as part of your giving organization. As always 100% of your donations will go to the scholarship fund unless otherwise specified by you.

We have sent over 200 kids back to school to date and we don't want to stop anytime soon. Your donation makes this all possible.

You can donate via our website at

Or

If you're on the USA you can send a zelle donation to our official organization bank account. Please DM us for this information.

Thank you so much for considering us.
We are grateful for your support this and always

REMEDIAL MENTORSHIP PROGRAM | Usually, when our students close school, we hold mentorship sessions with them. Mentorship topics vary from one session to another.

Yesterday, our students attended a mentorship session with professional counsellors from Pan Africa Christian University. Some of the topics of discussion included how to attain self-realization (knowing who you are and curving an image that matches who you’d want to become), how to boost one’s self-esteem, and how to manoeuvre through the adolescent stage of life.

Today, Tamika, an undergraduate from Strathmore University who currently volunteers with us held a session with our students on a variety of topics including peer pressure, time management, creating & maintaining good rapport with parents, and stress management.

Now that schools are closed for a period of 7 weeks (longer period than usual), it’s important for us to improvise interesting and educative activities that would help to keep the students busy and learning. Life skill sessions are one among other ways that we’re planning to help motivate and keep busy our students during this holiday.

Today, we were visited by Lauren, a long time supporter of ROCK KENYA and a staff member of the African Book Box Society (https://www.africanbookbox.org/), which had previously donated textbooks for our library. We are really grateful for Lauren and we are looking forward to our continued collaboration.

Dear Friends:

Happy New Year!!

The pandemic has made life extremely hard for people from underdeveloped areas such as Kibera slums where we are based. A lot of people lost their jobs and this made it hard for the majority of parents to provide for their families. Sometimes, the lack of enough basic needs such as food and clothing from a family might affect children mentally. It’s because of such cases that we have been closely following up with our students and their parents to learn and be aware of their wellbeing. We have been distributing foodstuff to families that are still extremely struggling financially.

Also, during the December holidays, as part of our culture, we usually treat our students with a 1-week camp retreat outside of Nairobi so they can take their heads off the academics for a while & forget about some of the difficulties that their families might be going through, bond with each other more closely, have fun, create new networks, and learn from their elder peers through stories and testimonials. This year, due to the pandemic, we organized a 3-day camp for our students at Olooltepes Picnic Site. Check out some of the pictures of our students having fun at the site.

Lastly, if you’ll like to support us to help empower more young people from Kibera through education, kindly consider contributing to us. Check out our end of year newsletter (https://mailchi.mp/f49a98e96507/2020newsletter) and donate via the newsletter link or our website, http://rockkenya.org/index.php/donate/
Thanks in advance and have a wonderful new year!
