Alcohol, Stress & Trauma

The probability of an individual falling into the alcoholism snare increases if childhood and life trauma is not properly addressed. Alcoholism becomes a coping mechanism. Some examples of childhood and life trauma are:
- Physical neglect
- Physical abuse by parent, guardian, caretaker or spouse
- Emotional abuse and neglect
- Sexual abuse
- R**e
- Falling victim to violent acts like robbery and carjacking
- Observing violent victimisation

Alcohol is not the solution. Seek help from people you can trust. Don't face the trauma alone. A problem shared is half solved!

Alcohol, Stress & Trauma

The likelihood of binge drinking (occasional heavy drinking) and developing severe forms of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) increases due to stress and trauma. One of the causes of stress and trauma is adverse life events. Some examples of adverse life events are:
- Death of a parent / guardian
- Separation / divorce of parents and conflict at home
- Isolation and abandonment
- Single-parent family structure
- Being forced to live away from parents
- Child being taken away by death or other causes eg kidnapping
- Unfaithfulness of spouse
- Losing a home due to flooding or other natural causes
- Death of spouse or close family member

In trying to cope with these events, some individuals resort to short-term relief measures such as substance abuse. There are better ways of dealing with stress. You are not alone!

What is stress?
Stress is the natural reaction your body has when changes or challenges occur. The demands are called stressors. Stress acts as a motivator for one to just behaviour to meet changing demands.

Types of stress
- Distress is negative stress and can lead to anxiety and health issues.
- Eustress is positive stress that helps us stay motivated, work toward goals, and feel good about life.

Often, people with chronic stress try different things to cope. And some of those things are habit-forming and can have an impact on your health. These may include:
Alcohol use disorder
* Gambling disorder.
* Overeating or developing an eating disorder.
* Participating compulsively in s*x, shopping or internet browsing.
* Smoking.
* Substance use disorder.

When life feels increasingly difficult and the best solution you can think of is to drink or use other substances to cope, it may be time to get help. If the alcohol or the drugs were helping, wouldn’t life become easier and more manageable? However, things keep getting harder. It feels like you are sinking day by day. Don’t lose hope! You can still turn your life around.

Do I have a drinking problem?

Drinking creates problems in your relationships: spouse, family, friends. Maybe you treat them poorly or maybe you just aren’t fully able to be there for the people who care about you.

Another clear sign: your partner begins treating you like a child. If they feel like they need to manage you, it may be an indication that they see how unmanageable things have become and are trying to help.

If someone close to you has expressed concern about your drinking, it’s worth paying attention to that feedback. Partners, family members, and close friends are often the first to notice when alcohol begins to change someone’s behavior, mood, or reliability.

There is a common misconception that alcohol is a problem only when you start drinking every day or lose everything in your life. However, alcohol problems don’t pop up one day but start piling up gradually.
Is alcohol affecting your relationships, your mental health, your work, or your ability to manage everyday life? Don’t complicate life with alcohol. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Using alcohol as a coping mechanism can provide temporary relief from stress or difficult emotions, but it often leads to negative long-term effects such as addiction, health issues, and damaged relationships.

It is important to seek healthier coping strategies to manage stress and emotional challenges.

You were created to exercise dominion over your environment. Take charge of your life and say no more addiction and enslavement! You are a king! You only need to identify the boundaries God set for you to exercise your dominion! God’s plan is better than yours!

Genesis 1:26
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Environmental stressors, such as high-pressure work situations, violent communities, or dysfunctional family dynamics, can increase the likelihood of addiction by pushing individuals to use substances as a coping mechanism. Some things you can change; start now! However, others things are beyond you. Don't stress yourself; leave them unto God Almighty.

Matthew 6:25 - 27
“That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?
