Autism and ADHD are not the same. 🧩⚑
🧩 Autism: Loves routines, focused on specific interests, sensitive to sounds and touch.
⚑ ADHD: Very active, easily distracted, hard to stay organized.
Both are different ways of experiencing the world β€” and both deserve understanding, not judgment.
At WeCanLead OPD, we believe awareness builds inclusion. πŸ’™

During our HI mentorship on school accessibility, one of our members showed something important.
He demonstrated how too much sand in a school compound makes it impossible for wheelchair users to move around freely.
This is why we do accessibility assessments. Small things like sand, a narrow door, or a high step can completely block a person with disability from accessing school.

WeCanLead OPD, together with other OPDs in Kakuma, is working to make sure every child can access education β€” no matter their disability.
Big thanks to & Inclusion (HI) for guiding us through this training. πŸ’ͺ

Integration β‰  Inclusion.
Here's the difference. πŸ‘‡

Integration β†’ The child adapts to the school.
Inclusion β†’ The school adapts to the child.

At WeCanLead OPD, we advocate for schools that adapt to every learner β€” not children forced to cope with systems not built for them.

πŸšͺ Last week, WeCanLead OPD and fellow OPDs across Kakuma were in the compound assessing door and gate accessibility β€” mentored by Humanity & Inclusion (HI).
Here is what inclusive access requires vs. what we found:
πŸ“ Standards:
Door width: min 900mm | Gate width: min 1200mm
Threshold height: max 13mm
Wheelchair turning space: min 1500mm
πŸ” Our Findings:
Building door threshold too high β€” blocks wheelchair entry
Kitchen door below 900mm β€” impassable for wheelchair users
Bathroom has no turning space for wheelchairs
Compound gate below recommended 1200mm clearance
For a wheelchair user, a door too narrow is not an inconvenience β€” it is a wall.
Thank you HI for mentoring us to assess and advocate with evidence. πŸ’ͺ

Heavy rains have flooded parts of Kakuma.

Children are walking through water to reach home. Some cannot reach school at all.

For children with disabilities, this is harder.
Wet roads block wheelchairs.
Crutches sink in mud.
Caregivers struggle to carry them safely.

Many vulnerable families are affected.

WeCanLead OPD stands with them.
We call for support to protect children with disabilities and keep them learning.

Leading inclusion. Empowering ability.

β€ŽπŸ” Last Week, We Went Into the Field β€” and the Barriers Were Impossible to Ignore.
β€ŽOn Day 2 of our mentorship with Humanity & Inclusion (HI), our team stepped out of the classroom and into the schools of Kakuma to conduct real, hands-on accessibility assessments.
β€ŽWhat we documented was sobering β€” some critical accessibility challenges in school facilities that are supposed to serve everyone:
β€Žβ™Ώ Dangerous ramps β€” too steep, no handrails, unusable in the rain for wheelchair users
β€ŽπŸšͺ Blocked entrances β€” door thresholds and narrow doorways at main buildings and kitchens preventing independent access
β€ŽπŸšΏ Inaccessible washrooms β€” no grab rails, no entry ramp, walls too close to allow wheelchair turning β€” effectively denying privacy and dignity
β€ŽπŸ« Hazardous outdoor spaces β€” wood stumps on pathways, loose sand trapping wheelchair wheels, and sinks too high to reach from a seated position
β€ŽThese are not minor inconveniences. They are daily barriers to dignity, safety, and full participation for learners and community members with disabilities in Kakuma.
β€ŽWe are grateful to HI for equipping us with the skills to see and name these barriers , because you cannot advocate for what you cannot document.
