Yesterday, WeCanLead OPD participated in a valuable training on disability data, facilitated by Brian Kipngenoh from Humanity & Inclusion (HI).

The session focused on the 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 (𝗜𝗖𝗙) and the 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, strengthening our understanding of how disability data can be collected and used to better identify barriers, participation, and support needs.

For us as a disability-led organization, quality disability data is important for evidence-based advocacy and ensuring that the experiences of persons with disabilities are reflected in programmes, services, and decision-making.

We sincerely appreciate Brian and the HI Kenya team for their continued technical support, knowledge sharing, and commitment to strengthening 𝗪𝗲𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗢𝗣𝗗.

We continue learning, strengthening our capacity, and building better systems for disability inclusion in Kakuma.

WeCanLead-OPD joined forces with fellow

Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) for an intensive 2-days capacity-building training session.

The day-one session focused entirely on Inclusive Leadership, diving deep into key strategic objectives to elevate our community impact:

Strategic Leadership & Systems Thinking: Shifting our approach to understand and navigate the broader systems affecting our community.

Building Trust: Establishing deep transparency and accountability within our grassroots network. Strengthening Partnerships: Learning how to collaborate more effectively with external stakeholders and allies.

Developing Leaders: Equipping emerging advocates within our team to take on formal ownership roles.

A huge thank you to the facilitators from and the team for delivering an incredibly insightful, practical, and empowering session. We also extend our deep gratitude to HI Kenya for their ongoing support and mentorship in our development journey. We are eager to implement these new tools to build a stronger, more inclusive community in Kakuma!

Yesterday, WeCanLead OPD held a meaningful caregivers session focused on 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 and 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗳.

We created a safe space for caregivers to share experiences, talk about the pressures they face, and learn simple ways to manage stress while continuing to support their children.

We were also joined by a 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿 from HI Kenya, who shared important insights on supporting children with disabilities as they 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 from home to school. The discussion highlighted the importance of preparing families, working with schools, and creating a supportive environment for children during this transition.

We appreciate the caregivers for their openness and participation, and we thank HI for the continued technical support and collaboration.

Together, we are strengthening families and promoting inclusive education for children with disabilities.

connected virtually with the (United Disabled Persons of Kenya UDPK ) team for a focused one-day session to develop an Advocacy Strategy and Action Plan for learners with disabilities in schools across Kakuma Refugee Camp.

We tackled two key barriers head-on:

Physical barriers - inaccessible classrooms, missing ramps, and unsafe school environments.

Attitudinal barriers - stigma, bullying, and exclusion that push learners with disabilities out of school life.

The plan is ready. The work begins now. A heartfelt thank you to UDPK for your expertise and partnership - and to HI Kenya for the continued technical support and mentorship that makes work like this possible.

What does true inclusion look like in practice?

‎We recently sat down with caregivers of children with disabilities in Kakuma to discuss exactly this. Using the illustration below, we explored the journey from isolation to belonging, and how we can work together to transform local schools.
‎
‎The framework breaks down four distinct realities:Exclusion:
‎
‎Children are left outside, completely denied access, voice, and opportunity.
‎
‎Segregation: Children are sent to school but kept apart from peers, treated as "different."
‎
‎Integration: Children are allowed into the classroom, but physical and social barriers remain.
‎
‎Inclusion: Every child learns together, participates fully, and receives equal respect.
‎
‎Our mission in Kakuma schools is to move completely past integration and achieve true inclusion. It is not enough for a child with a disability to simply be present in a classroom; they must be fully supported, heard, and valued.
‎
‎We are proud to be working alongside Humanity & Inclusion to achieve this vital goal. By combining our strengths and partnering directly with caregivers, educators, and community leaders, we are actively breaking down physical and social barriers.

‎Together, we want to ensure that every school community is built on respect, equality, participation, and dignity.

Yesterday, WeCanLead OPD took a significant step forward in our mission to champion inclusion and equality. We successfully hosted an impactful training and empowerment session tailored specifically for parents and caregivers of children with disabilities.

Caregivers are central to sustainable change, yet they frequently navigate immense societal and structural barriers without adequate resources. Through this targeted session, we focused on equipping families with practical knowledge, community support networks, and localized tools to ensure every child can thrive.

At WeCanLead OPD, we firmly believe that grassroots empowerment is the foundation of structural change. True disability advocacy begins by validating, supporting, and elevating the voices of the families who anchor our communities every single day.

We extend our deepest gratitude and appreciation to Humanity & Inclusion for working alongside us. Strong partnerships are vital to making a lasting impact, and their collaboration and support were instrumental in making this session a success.

Thank you to all the dedicated parents, caregivers, and team members who participated, shared their lived experiences, and committed to building a barrier-free future.
