Today, Our Founder of Kapei Ateker Wellbeing Integrated Development Organization (KAWIDO) paid a courtesy call to the Founder of Scorpion Control Centre Godfrey Sangu .

The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange ideas, discuss organizational development, and explore areas of mutual interest and potential collaboration.

Key takeaways from the meeting:

1.Establishment of a physical office – We discussed the importance of setting up a physical office for KAWIDO to strengthen our organizational presence, credibility, coordination, and engagement with partners and communities.

2.Continuous networking – We agreed on the importance of continuously building relationships with organizations, institutions, leaders, and potential partners to create opportunities for collaboration, partnerships, mentorship, and resource mobilization.

3.Strengthening partnerships – The discussion highlighted the need to maintain meaningful relationships with organizations and individuals who share our commitment to community development.
Learning and growth

The meeting also provided valuable insights that can help KAWIDO strengthen its operations and position itself for future opportunities.

A key lesson: Building an organization is not only about having a good vision—it is also about creating a physical presence, building trust, and continuously connecting with people and institutions that can help turn that vision into impact.

Following our recent rapid community needs assessment across Turkana West, Lokichoggio, and Loima, the KAWIDO team took our field insights straight to the decision-makers!

We held highly productive meetings with the Turkana County Director of Medical Services and the Deputy Director of Veterinary Services.

During these sessions, we shared key field updates and immediate data collected from the health facilities and kraal communities.

Interviewed the directors on governance, departmental focus areas, and service delivery strategies.

Explored strategic partnerships to ensure our future community interventions align perfectly with county health and veterinary priorities.

True impact happens when grassroots community voices meet strong institutional governance.

We look forward to a continued, impactful collaboration with the county government!

COMMUNITY NEEDS ASSESSMENT COMPLETED!

From 25th to 30th June 2026, the KAWIDO team successfully conducted a rapid community needs assessment targeting health facilities and kraal groups across Turkana West, Lokichoggio, and Loima.

We traversed vast terrains to reach and listen to communities in:
-Turkana West & Lokichoggio: Nadapal Borders, Oropoi, Loreng, and Nomorkirionok.

-Loima: Lokiriama.Our assessment focused on two critical areas to help inform future interventions:

1. Health Facility Assessments:We evaluated service capacity, resources and staffing, disease surveillance, maternal and child health, WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), waste management, and overall infection prevention and control status.

2. Kraal Focus Group Discussions (FGDs):We sat down with communities to assess health access, maternal and child health, the intersection of animal and human health (One Health), and the pressing issues of nutrition and food security.

A big thank you to the community members, kraal leaders, and healthcare workers who shared their vital insights with us. Together, we work towards a healthier, more resilient community!

This World Water Week, Kapei Ateker Wellbeing Integrated Development Organization (KAWIDO) stands with communities across Turkana and beyond in recognizing that water is not a luxury—it is a basic necessity for life, health and dignity.

In Turkana, many communities, schools and health facilities continue to face challenges accessing safe and reliable water. Health workers need water to maintain hygiene and infection prevention. Children need water to learn in safe and healthy schools. Families need water for drinking, sanitation and everyday life.

At KAWIDO, we are committed to working with communities to improve access to **safe water in health facilities, schools and vulnerable communities across Turkana.** Our community assessments have highlighted urgent gaps in water access that require collective action.

We cannot do this alone.

At KAWIDO,we believe a health facility should be a place of healing and dignity… but what happens when even the most basic needs are not met?

In many of the communities we serve, health facilities have toilets, yes—but they are not improved pit latrines. They are unsafe, unhygienic, and unfit for both patients and health workers. Worse still, there are no shower rooms, and the facilities are not accessible for people living with disabilities.

Imagine being sick, weak, or pregnant—and struggling to use a toilet that is unsafe or inaccessible.

This is not just an infrastructure gap. It is a dignity crisis.

Through our WASH and One Health work, KAWIDO is advocating for urgent action to ensure every health facility has:

1.Safe, improved sanitation
2.Functional shower rooms
3.Inclusive access for persons with disabilities

Health care must be safe, inclusive, and humane for everyone.

Recent assessments have revealed critical challenges:
1.Lack of safe and reliable water in health facilities and communities
2.Limited access to healthcare due to migration and distance

4.Ongoing drought affecting livelihoods and wellbeing
5.Inadequate sanitation facilities—patients and health workers sharing unsafe, non-inclusive spaces

Burning healthcare waste in the open is a silent danger in many of our communities.

Without proper incineration (burning chambers), harmful medical waste like used syringes, gloves, and contaminated materials are often burned in open spaces—putting lives at risk.

🚫 Toxic smoke pollutes the air we breathe
🚫 Dangerous chemicals can cause respiratory illnesses and long-term health effects
🚫 Open burning exposes children and communities to infections and injuries
🚫 Contaminated ash can pollute soil and water sources
🚫 Health workers and patients remain at constant risk

This is not just a waste problem—it is a public health crisis.

Health facilities deserve safe, proper systems to manage waste. Communities deserve clean air and a healthy environment.
