At KAWIDO,we believe a health facility should be a place of healing and dignity… but what happens when even the most basic needs are not met?

In many of the communities we serve, health facilities have toilets, yes—but they are not improved pit latrines. They are unsafe, unhygienic, and unfit for both patients and health workers. Worse still, there are no shower rooms, and the facilities are not accessible for people living with disabilities.

Imagine being sick, weak, or pregnant—and struggling to use a toilet that is unsafe or inaccessible.

This is not just an infrastructure gap. It is a dignity crisis.

Through our WASH and One Health work, KAWIDO is advocating for urgent action to ensure every health facility has:

1.Safe, improved sanitation
2.Functional shower rooms
3.Inclusive access for persons with disabilities

Recent assessments have revealed critical challenges:
1.Lack of safe and reliable water in health facilities and communities
2.Limited access to healthcare due to migration and distance
3.Rising cases of rabies and livestock diseases
4.Ongoing drought affecting livelihoods and wellbeing
5.Inadequate sanitation facilities—patients and health workers sharing unsafe, non-inclusive spaces

Burning healthcare waste in the open is a silent danger in many of our communities.

Without proper incineration (burning chambers), harmful medical waste like used syringes, gloves, and contaminated materials are often burned in open spaces—putting lives at risk.

🚫 Toxic smoke pollutes the air we breathe

Handwashing Saves Lives – But Where Is the Water?

In many health facilities in hard-to-reach areas, something as basic as handwashing is still a challenge. There are no functional handwashing stations, and in some cases, no reliable water supply at all.

This is not just an inconvenience—it is a serious health risk.
Proper hand hygiene is one of the most effective ways to prevent infections, protect mothers and newborns, and stop the spread of diseases within health facilities. When healthcare workers and patients cannot wash their hands, the risk of infections increases dramatically.

Every day, families in hard-to-reach areas walk for hours under harsh conditions just to access basic healthcare—or go without it completely. Mothers give birth without skilled support, children miss life-saving treatment, and preventable illnesses become life-threatening.

At KAWIDO, we believe healthcare must reach the people, not the other way around.

Through mobile outreach services, community health education, and integrated human, animal, and environmental health programs, we are working to bring essential care closer to those who need it most.

But we cannot do this alone.

💧 No Water, No Safe Birth 💧

In some health facilities, mothers are forced to carry water from home while in labor. This is unsafe, undignified, and puts lives at risk.

No water means:

-Higher risk of infections
-Unsafe deliveries
-Poor quality care

Water is a basic need—not a luxury.

Every mother deserves a safe, clean place to give birth.
