Meet Esther Ruharara, Founder of Inspire Hand Creation Enterprise in Kakuma 3. A talented bead artist and aspiring fashion designer transforming creativity into opportunity.

From handcrafted bracelets, earrings, and lanyards to beautifully crafted leather bags, Esther is building more than a business she is creating pathways for women in her community to earn, grow, and thrive. Through skills gained from the Turkana Creative Nexus Project, she strengthened her business management and record-keeping practices, helping her turn passion into a sustainable enterprise.

Today, she proudly supports herself, mentors other women, and creates jobs through her craft.

Recognising the growing demand for beauty services, Jemmimah invested in modern equipment, renovated her spa, and expanded her stock to better serve her clients. Today, Rama Beauty Parlour Spa offers a wide range of professional services, including body massage, skincare treatments, facials, makeup application, pedicure and manicure, gel nails, tips and stick-ons, microblading, and waxing.

“When I was growing up, I loved watching my mother make beadwork. I never thought that one day I would follow the same path and turn it into my own business.”

Asha is a 22-year-old bead maker from the Turkana community living in Kakuma Town. Inspired by her mother's skills, she started learning beadwork at a young age by watching and helping her create beautiful handmade designs.

Today, beadwork is more than just a skill for Asha. It is a way for her to earn a living, express her creativity, and keep Turkana culture alive through her work. Every necklace, bracelet, and accessory she creates carries a story of tradition, hard work, and hope.

Like many young entrepreneurs, Asha faces challenges such as limited capital and access to materials. Despite these difficulties, she continues to work hard and grow her business one piece at a time.

Through the Turkana Creative Nexus project, implemented by IConnectKenya with funding from HEVA Fund under the Sanara Programme, Asha has gained new skills and opportunities to improve her business and reach more customers.

Today, Asha dreams of growing her beadwork business and teaching other young women and girls the skill that changed her life.

Creatives of Turkana - Esther Ruharara
“When I started making beadwork, I was just creating something for myself. I didn’t know it would one day support my family.”
Esther Ruharara is a fashion designer and beadwork artisan based in Kakuma. What began as a simple skill she learned from a friend has grown into a business that now shapes her future.
She creates handmade leather and beaded pieces bags, earrings, necklaces, lanyards and belts each one telling a story of patience, craft, and resilience. But beyond the beauty of her work is a deeper purpose.
Esther is using her skills to create opportunities for others, especially young people in her community who are looking for a way to earn and grow.
The journey hasn’t been easy. Limited capital and resources often slowed her down. But through the Turkana Creative Nexus, she gained business knowledge and digital marketing skills that helped her move forward and reach new customers.
Today, beadwork is more than a craft it is her identity.

Creatives of Turkana -Malua Chimosa Lugazo
“When I first started, I noticed many people around me wanted beautiful things for their homes but could not easily access them. That’s when I thought why not create them myself?”
Malua Chimosa Lugazo is an embroidery and fashion designer based in Kakuma 3, where she runs Malau Fashion Design and Embroidery. What began as a simple response to a community need has grown into a thriving business creating affordable home décor and fashion pieces for customers in Kakuma and beyond.
But for Chimosa, her work is about more than making sales.
Through her business, she has built a sustainable livelihood for her family while also creating opportunities for young girls in her community by training and employing them in tailoring and embroidery.
Through the Turkana Creative Nexus funded by under the project, she gained digital marketing skills,practical entreprenuership skills and exposure that helped her connect with customers both within Kakuma and beyond.
Now, she dreams of expanding her workshop with more machines and materials so she can train even more young women and grow her impact.
