In the world of work, technical skills are only part of the equation.

How we communicate with colleagues, handle conflict, relate with employers, serve customers, respect personal space, maintain professional grooming, and lead our teams all contribute to the kind of working environment we create.

Earlier this week, we had the privilege of hosting an expert and an experienced HR professional from the Kenyan government for a Leadership, Management & Team Management training under the Turkana Soko Project.

The session explored the practical skills needed to build healthier, more respectful and less toxic workplaces because good leadership isn't just about managing people; it's about understanding and working well with them.

And for those wondering… yes, personal grooming and even making your bed count too! 👀😂

As we continue empowering creatives and entrepreneurs with skills beyond their craft, one question remains:

We had an amazing time asking random people one simple question: 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫 “𝐢𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚,” 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐦 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝? 😂

As iConnect Kenya gears up to celebrate 5 years literally half a decade! We thought, why not find out what people actually think of when they hear our name?

And in case you didn’t know, 𝐢𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬. We focus on empowering women and youth from marginalized communities by bridging the marketing gap for creative groups in Turkana through market linkages, training, and storytelling.

𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐦𝐚𝐣𝐨𝐫 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐓𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲! ❤️

And today, we choose to celebrate our mother, the woman who had a dream of empowering women and youth and simply refused to stop.

Did you know she started iConnect Kenya back in 2021 with a team of less than five people and no office? Two years later, iConnect had a physical office. And today? We’re talking about a team of at least 20 members, alongside several dedicated volunteers.

But the office was never the story.

The dream was.

The lack of resources didn’t put out her fire. The challenges didn’t make her abandon the vision. Instead, she kept building and that persistence has created opportunities and employment for both refugees and members of the host community.

Today, we celebrate her resilience, her leadership, and the impact she continues to create in society.

Because knowing the fire in this woman, what we are seeing today is only a glimpse of what is possible.

If you ask me, she is hands down a powerhouse and an icon who deserves bigger wings to fly even higher.

Her resilience is part of the reason she keeps moving despite the challenges. And clearly, she has her eyes on the prize.

So, on behalf of the iConnect family:

𝗔𝗽𝗲𝘄𝗲 𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶 𝗸𝘄𝗮 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗲𝘁𝘂! 😂👏🏾

Our Super Terrific Tuesday is brought to you by Ornella, a Burundian crochet maker with her eyes firmly on the prize.

As part of the Turkana Soko Project’s visitation of artisans, we met Ornella, whose crochet skills have become more than just a craft. They are a source of income, purpose, and a competitive advantage in a new environment.

Like anyone entering a new environment, you do what you can to stay grounded. For Ornella, that meant turning her creativity into something tangible creating beautiful crochet pieces, selling them, and building an income from her skills.

But she doesn’t keep the knowledge to herself. Ornella also trains fellow women who are interested in learning the craft, because when one woman gains skills and opportunities, the impact can extend far beyond her.

Yet despite the challenges she has faced, Ornella hasn’t given up.

So, what keeps her going?

Meet Ornella, our content creation queen, showing us how to make Matoke, a beloved Burundian delicacy.Wait… didn’t we all think Matoke was a Ugandan delicacy? 👀 Well, we’re surprised too!

What makes Matoke even more fascinating is how differently it can be prepared across cultures. Different methods, different flavours, different vibes but still the unmistakable Matoke we know and love.

So, tell us which type of Matoke have you tried so far, and which one are you looking forward to trying next?

Today’s WCW is Noella Kadanga.

A farmer in Kakuma 1, a mother of eight, and a woman with a simple reason for doing what she does: to feed her family and earn an income.

But today, let’s talk about something a little closer to home. Literally. 😄

Some of you may never have had the privilege of tasting Sombe. And if you know, you KNOW.

For those who may not know, sombe is a traditional Congolese dish. It’s not exactly an everyday meal. Think of it as something that belongs on the specials menu.

But have you ever stopped to wonder what sombe is actually made from?

Cassava leaves. 🌿

And that is where Noella’s story becomes even more special.

Despite the challenges of farming in a semi-arid place like Kakuma, Noella continues to grow cassava and other vegetables not only to support her family, but also to make food that carries memories, culture and identity available to the community around her.

Because sometimes, farming is more than putting food on the table.

Sometimes, it is about giving someone a taste of home.

Today, we celebrate Noella not just as a farmer or a mother of eight, but as a woman helping people stay connected to their roots, one cassava leaf at a time. ❤️🌱

Meet Grace, the President of Single Mothers! 👑

If you ever find yourself in Kakuma 1, make sure you meet Grace. And whatever you do, don’t forget her title: President of Single Mothers.

Grace is a talented basket weaver who has turned her craft into a source of income but she didn’t stop there. She is also passing her skills on to other single mothers, helping them discover that their hands can create more than beautiful baskets; they can create opportunities.

We paid Grace a visit through the Turkana Soko Project, and let’s just say… the President is busy! 👀

Behind every basket is a woman building, teaching, creating, and refusing to let circumstances decide how far she can go.

Being a single mother may be part of Grace’s story, but it is certainly not the end of it. Her fire is still burning, and from where we’re standing, it looks like it’s only getting bigger.

This is what empowerment looks like: one woman discovering her strength, sharing her knowledge, and bringing other women along with her.

And if Grace is the President, we already know the agenda: women creating, women earning, women leading.

As Beyoncé said… women run the world.

Looking back at this iconic Kitenge Festival, one thing about vitenges they will have you showing up and showing out, unapologetically. And honestly? Everyone understood the assignment.

As we take a little trip down memory lane, this throwback is a reminder that we all express ourselves differently and fashion is one of the most beautiful ways we get to tell the world who we are without saying a word.

So wear the colour. Wear the print. Wear the thing that makes you feel like YOU.

Don’t shy away from expressing yourself. Show up. Show out. Be unapologetically you.

Meet Elizabeth Nangolol, a traditional hairdresser keeping Turkana culture alive, one hairstyle at a time.Elizabeth learned the art from her mother, watching closely and eventually practicing what she had seen her mother do.

This is no ordinary hairstyle. Awoyere is a traditional style worn on special cultural occasions, including traditional weddings.

Elizabeth begins by carefully rolling the hair, a technique she says came naturally because she grew up watching her mother do it. Once the hairstyle is complete, it is oiled and finished with a round metal ornament placed around the woman’s neck which is a symbol of marriage, much like saying “hayuko soko.”

What may look like a hairstyle is actually a story of culture, identity, and knowledge passed from one generation to the next.

Through stories like Elizabeth’s, we celebrate the women who carry cultural knowledge forward and help ensure that traditional skills remain part of our living heritage.

Because culture is not only something we remember. It is something we continue to pass on.

Saturdays are better when there’s a full table, full hearts, and a community showing up for one another. ❤

At the 3rd Edition of the Kupika Drive, women and girls came together for more than just cooking. They cooked, shared a meal, connected, and reminded us that fighting GBV also means creating communities where women and girls feel supported, valued, and empowered.

And because community support should go beyond the meal, generous well-wishers made it possible to share essentials and more. From serving food to sharing resources, from receiving sanitary towels to simply sitting together and eating, every moment was a reminder that when a community comes together, everyone has a seat at the table.
