What started with laughter, excitement, and curiosity around the board slowly became honest conversations about relationships, HIV, consent, mental health, peer pressure, online experiences, and the pressure of fitting in.

Some participants spoke openly from the beginning. Others took time, listening quietly before finally finding the courage to share their thoughts and experiences. By the end of the session, even the quietest voices were part of the conversation.

One participant told us:
"This is the first time learning felt safe and fun at the same time."

Moments like these remind us that young people are not afraid of difficult conversations. They are simply looking for safe, relatable, and non-judgmental spaces to have them.

RWASH is proud to have participated in the Love Land board game by Taboobreaker Association/SA NPC — an innovative, interactive tool transforming conversations around Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).

This is not your regular board game. Love Land creates bold, safe, and engaging spaces where young people and communities can openly discuss topics often considered taboo. Through 12 interactive Topic Islands, players explore conversations around contraception, safer s*x, puberty, menstruation, HIV, STIs, healthy relationships, online safety, GBV prevention, wellbeing, identity, and more.

The experience was energetic, reflective, and deeply impactful. We witnessed how play-based learning can break silence, challenge stigma, and encourage honest conversations in ways that traditional approaches sometimes cannot.

As RWASH, we are excited to be part of this journey and look forward to learning, adapting, and expanding innovative community-led approaches that strengthen SRHR awareness, digital safety, gender justice, and youth empowerment in rural and peri-urban communities.

One pilot down. More transformative conversations ahead.

RWASH recently participated in the FemTech Academy on Digital Rights held in Nairobi (23rd–25th April 2026), a Legal Vanguard programme by Equality Vanguard.

The Academy brought together women and gender-diverse practitioners from across Africa to explore key issues at the intersection of technology, law, and gender justice including AI governance, data protection, platform regulation, and technology-facilitated gender-based violence.

Through interactive sessions and collaborative labs, participants developed practical solutions such as policy interventions, advocacy strategies, legal approaches, and tech-based innovations to address digital inequalities.

We are grateful to have been part of this powerful learning space and to connect with inspiring leaders working toward more inclusive, just, and safe digital futures.

Girls in ICT Day Spotlight
Today, we join the world in celebrating International Girls in ICT Day
A moment to recognize the power, potential, and impact of girls and young women in technology.
At the heart of the digital economy are bold ideas, creative thinkers, and opportunities waiting to be unlocked. Today, we proudly spotlight Dorice, our Co-ED, whose work continues to inspire innovation, leadership, and inclusion in the ICT space.
Her journey is a reminder that technology is more than just a tool. It is a gateway to endless possibilities. Through her leadership, she encourages young women and girls to step into the digital world, build solutions, and create opportunities not just for themselves, but for their communities.

Reflections!!
Attending the IJUE DATA YAKO COHORT III last week : PROMOTING LOCALLY-LED AWARENESS ON DIGITAL RIGHTS AND DATA PROTECTION AMONG CSOs IN KAKAMEGA, BUNGOMA AND BUSIA COUNTIES was a defining moment to our work.
While the conversations centered on inclusion, digital rights, and data protection, it was evident that smaller, community-led organizations often navigate these spaces differently which reinforced the importance of intentionally creating platforms where grassroots voices are not only present but actively shaping agendas. Much appreciation to ICON Data and Learning LabsIcon Data Labs and Amnesty International Kenya for deepening our understanding of the Kenya Data Protection Act (2019) and the urgent need for localized awareness. For the many rural women, girls and marginalized communities we work with, digital rights are not abstract concepts. They are lived realities tied to privacy, safety, dignity, and access to services. This experience reshaped how we approach our programming, pushing us to more intentionally integrate digital literacy, data protection, and efforts to tackle technology-facilitated gender-based violence into our work.
Looking back, IJUE DATA YAKO III was not just a convening. It was a catalyst that challenged us to think more critically about equity and strengthened our commitment to community-led approaches. It also highlighted a key gap: the need for organizations like ours to register with the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner as data controllers/handlers, a step that continues to shape how RWASH engages in responsible digital rights advocacy today. Looking foward to a wonderful 6 months of learning, unlearning and re learning!

It's a wrap
25 CSOs. 3 counties. One shared learning journey.

As participants in , this moment reflects a collective commitment to strengthening digital rights and data protection across Busia, Bungoma, and Kakamega.

Together, we are building our capacity as local organizations working across diverse thematic areas — learning, unlearning, and supporting one another to better understand and apply digital rights in our work.

We are also taking steps to navigate the Kenya Data Protection Act, 2019 within our own organizations, while co-creating digital campaigns that raise awareness in ways that resonate with our communities.

Through this shared experience, we are contributing to a broader learning process — exploring how peer-to-peer approaches can strengthen knowledge, practice, and accountability in digital rights and data protection.

This is what collaboration looks like — grounded, local, and led by communities.
