As we celebrate this year’s Day of the African Child (DAC), we are reminded that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.

This year’s theme, “Planning and Budgeting for Children’s Rights: Progress Since 2010,” calls on all of us to strengthen our commitment toward creating systems that protect and invest in children.

At Il’laramatak Community Concerns (ICC), we continue to support children and families through education, child protection, mentorship, and community empowerment initiatives.

When we invest in children today, we build stronger communities and a brighter future for Africa.

Menstrual health is more than hygiene — it is dignity, education, confidence, and protection for the girl child.

In Kenya, over one million girls miss school every month due to lack of sanitary products and menstrual health information, with many girls in pastoralist communities facing stigma, poor access to pads, and inadequate menstrual hygiene support. Studies in Kajiado County also show that period poverty continues to affect school attendance, confidence, and the well-being of girls. ([The Star][1])

At Il’laramatak Community Concerns (ICC), we continue to work towards changing this reality by providing sanitary pads, menstrual hygiene education, and mentorship sessions for girls in our communities. Through safe conversations and empowerment initiatives, we are helping girls stay in school, protect their dignity, build confidence, and reduce vulnerabilities such as teenage pregnancies and school dropout.

Every girl deserves to manage her period safely, confidently, and without shame.

In many communities, men are raised to believe that strength means silence. Conversations around emotions, stress, and mental health are often avoided, leaving many to struggle alone under the pressure of provision, leadership, and societal expectations.

Creating safe spaces for honest conversations around masculinity and mental health is not weakness, it is healing. Transforming mentalities begins when men and boys are allowed to speak, feel, and seek support without shame.

Did you know? In Kenya, nearly 1 in 4 girls is married before the age of 18, and Female Ge***al Mutilation remains closely linked to school dropout, early pregnancy, and limited opportunities for girls. ([UNICEF][1])

Through community dialogues, youth empowerment, school engagements, and women-led initiatives, we are working to shift harmful norms and create safer futures for girls.

We believe lasting change begins when communities are informed, empowered, and actively involved in protecting children.

Every conversation matters. Every girl deserves a future filled with choice, education, and opportunity.

Empowerment begins when skills evolve into opportunity.

Through beadwork training on products like decorative pillows, women in the community are expanding their craftsmanship beyond traditional designs and reaching new markets.

What was once familiar is now becoming innovative, marketable, and a source of income.

Change is most powerful when it begins early.

At Impiro Primary School, one of our trained ToTs—through our partnership with Spread Truth Africa—is leading a session focused on ending Female Ge***al Mutilation.

By engaging children at a young age, we are equipping them with knowledge, confidence, and the ability to make informed decisions about their bodies and their future.

When they understand, they can choose differently.

When they choose differently, change begins.

As the world gathers at Women Deliver 2026 Conference, we are reminded that bodily autonomy is a fundamental human right, not a privilege.

Every girl and woman deserves the freedom to make decisions about her own body, health, and future without violence, coercion, or harmful practices. The continued fight against Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM) is therefore a fight for dignity, equality, and justice.

Il'laramatak cc, we have observed that lasting change occurs when communities are engaged, survivors are supported, and girls are empowered to recognize that their bodies belong to them.

Ending FGM is not only about protecting girls today it is about transforming systems, mindsets, and futures for generations to come.

April, recognized globally as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, reminds us that prevention and healing require informed communities, safe spaces, and the courage to confront harmful practices that violate dignity and rights.

In partnership with Spread Truth Africa we were honored to facilitate training on the FGM Psychosocial Support Curriculum for TOTs, equipping participants with knowledge and practical skills to better support survivors, families, and communities.

In this video, participants share how the training deepened their understanding of trauma, healing, mental wellbeing, and the importance of compassionate responses for those affected by FGM and other forms of sexual and gender-based violence. Many described the sessions as eye-opening, transformative, and necessary for building stronger support systems at community level.

Ending violence requires more than awareness—it requires capacity, empathy, and action.

Mental health remains one of the most misunderstood and often overlooked aspects of wellbeing, particularly within community settings where stigma, silence, and limited awareness have shaped how individuals respond to emotional and psychological challenges. For many, struggles are endured quietly, with little access to information or support systems.
It is against this backdrop that Il'laramatak cc together with yetu and Interweave wellness, had the privilege of facilitating a community training on mental health awareness and support.
The sessions created a safe space for open dialogue, enabling participants to better understand mental health, challenge stigma, and reflect on how they have previously handled such issues. Many described the training as a powerful eye-opener shifting perspectives from silence and misunderstanding to awareness, empathy, and informed action.
Through continued engagement, participants expressed increased confidence in supporting themselves and others, recognizing the importance of communication, early intervention, and seeking help when needed.
A key highlight was the awarding of certificates, recognizing participants as emerging champions of mental health within their communities.
This marks an important step toward building more informed, supportive, and resilient communities.
