This is Jane Moyiare Meliyio and Josphine Ntito, both from Oloibor Soit Secondary School.

These girls are trekking many kilometers back home after they were sent home to collect school fees because their parents are unable to pay. They are walking long distances because they do not even have fare to board a matatu back home.

A Good Samaritan helped them, and they were able to get home safely.

They have little hope of going back to school. Sadly, one of the girls lost her father that same evening.

These girls are at risk of dropping out of school due to lack of school fees. These are just a few of the many cases of girls dropping out of school due to lack of school fees in our communities in Kajiado county in Kenya.

SMALA Foundation started with one painful question: “Who will help Maasai girls before it’s too late?”
Now we are turning pain into purpose, one life at a time.

Smala is committed to ending teenage pregnancy in Kajiado County.
The latest statistics are heartbreaking over 2,000 girls affected in just three months.
This is not just a number, it’s a generation at risk. We must ask ourselves, where did the rain start beating us?
We cannot stay silent. Something has to change.

Every girl deserves a chance to stay in school and pursue her dreams.

Recently, SMALA shared the plea of Ann Sakai Melubo, who had been forced to stay at home due to lack of school fees. Through the support of Hon. Janet Sereu the Minister of Education in Kajiado county,Ann received a bursary cheque that cleared her first and second term fees.

At SMALA, we continue working to support and empower Maasai girls through education, mentorship, and advocacy. Small efforts from different people can completely change a girl’s future and keep her in school.

We sincerely appreciate everyone who continues to stand with Maasai girls and give them hope for a better tomorrow. Together, we can create lasting change.

When I got the vision to stand with Maasai girls and return to the village, I encountered a painful reality rampant teenage pregnancies, FGM, and forced marriages. So many dreams were being cut short, and countless young girls were losing their potential. I saw a future where poverty would continue to grip our Maa community if education was neglected and harmful cultural practices were embraced.

I shared this burden with my fellow girls at the university and told them, it’s time for us to rise and bring change back home. What started as a small group of passionate young women has now grown into a community-based organization creating real impact across Maasai land.

Today, many girls are back in school, and some are even joining universities proof that change is possible.

Join us, and let’s continue transforming lives together.

Education is the great equalizer and when you educate a girl, you educate a nation.

At SMALA, we are committed to keeping girls in school and giving them a fair chance at life. This school opening season, we supported 8 Maasai girls with bursaries meaning they have returned to class instead of staying home due to lack of fees.

For these girls, it’s more than education it’s dignity, confidence, and hope for a better future. For their families, it brings relief, and for the community, it creates lasting change.

We believe real impact starts here one girl, one opportunity, one future at a time.

The Women Representative, Hon. Leah Sankaire, graced the event, where we jointly distributed sanitary towels to 2,000 girls and donated trees to all 20 participating schools.

We sincerely appreciate our partners Kipeto Development Trust, Naret Entito e Maa, Tata Chemicals, Maasai Girls Initiative,Friend of the Maasai and Beyond Cultural Limits CBO for their invaluable support in making this program a success. This is where it all began.
I was born in a community where I watched girls’ destinies being taken away by retrogressive cultural practices.
Girls my age were being forced into early marriages, dropping out of school, and losing their dreams before they even had a chance to begin.

And I told myself… this must end.

Today, I refuse to stay silent.
I choose to stand, to speak, and to fight for every girl who deserves an education, a voice, and a future.

But I cannot do it alone.

Join smala .
Support this cause.
Mentor a girl.
Sponsor sanitary towels.
Educate a girl
Speak up in your community.

Because when we uplift a girl, we uplift a generation.

Let’s rise together and change the story.

In the heart of our communities, a girl’s dream should never be limited by her circumstances. At SMALA, we are committed to empowering girls, giving them a voice, and creating opportunities for them to rise beyond the challenges they face.
