HAPPY INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 2026 | Different Contexts, Common Aspirations

Nearly 75% of Kenya’s population is below 35, a demographic reality that presents both a profound development challenge and an extraordinary opportunity.

Today in Isiolo, ASREP joined the County Government of Isiolo, National Government agencies, partners and hundreds of young people to commemorate International Youth Day 2026 under the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.”

Across diverse backgrounds, Isiolo’s young people share common aspirations: decent livelihoods, opportunity, dignity, peace, inclusion and meaningful participation in shaping their future. Yet unemployment, substance abuse, limited economic opportunities and resource-based conflicts continue to undermine this potential, particularly within a predominantly pastoralist economy.

A key issue emerging from today’s dialogue was the Isiolo County Youth Policy, a critical legislative and institutional framework for translating young people’s aspirations into sustainable opportunities.

As an emerging Think-and-Do Tank, ASREP commits to working with the County Youth Department, youth-led organizations, civil society, private sector and development partners to help unlock this process. Young people are not merely beneficiaries of development. They are its architects, innovators and leaders.

Let us move from celebrating youth to investing in youth; from consultation to meaningful participation; and from policy aspirations to measurable outcomes.

Happy International Youth Day 2026! ✊🏾🌍

RUNNING FOR PEACE, RUNNING FOR RESILIENCE 🏃🏃

Together with the @ National Drought Management Authority (NDMA Kenya) , ASREP joined hundreds of community members from Samburu, Isiolo, Laikipia, Garissa and Meru Counties for the 2026 NDMA Road Race for Peace & Resilience, led by CEO Haret. What brought us together went far beyond a road race.

It was a collective call for stronger cross-county action on drought risk, water security, early warning and anticipatory action—and an equally powerful call for peaceful coexistence among pastoralist communities whose livelihoods, mobility and ecosystems transcend administrative boundaries. A key message emerged: we cannot wait for drought to become a crisis before we act.

Investing in early warning, anticipatory action, water security and locally led resilience can help communities anticipate shocks, protect livelihoods and reduce the human and economic costs of recurrent drought. We were particularly encouraged by commitments from partners to reinvigorate support for early warning and anticipatory action, while strengthening peacebuilding and social cohesion across the ASALs.

For ASREP, this partnership is an opportunity to move from fragmented interventions towards research & evidence-driven, coordinated and community-owned resilience solutions. We are most pleased to be at the centre of this growing conversation, and committed to strengthening partnerships that help communities anticipate drought, prevent conflict, protect livelihoods and build a more resilient future. Because resilience is strongest when it is locally led, evidence-informed and collectively owned.
From the road to resilience, the journey continues.

Today, on Nagaa Radio Isiolo Kenya, thousands of listeners joined a powerful heart-to-heart community dialogue bringing together ASREP, Kenya School of Government (KSG), elders, youth and women leaders, the Office of the County Commissioner, and the County Government of Isiolo to discuss Governance and the KSGUndertheTree Series (UTTS), interrogating a fundamental question:

How do we make governance more responsive, inclusive and accountable, starting at the grassroots?

Delivered by KSG in partnership with ASREP, UTTS takes citizen engagement beyond consultation, bringing capacity building, public services and problem-solving closer to communities.
The development case is compelling: KNBS reports youth unemployment in Isiolo at 19.2%, while poverty stands at 52%. Investing in entrepreneurship, skills and labour productivity is therefore not simply a livelihoods intervention—it is an investment in human capital, household resilience and local economic transformation.

The community also highlighted the potential of UTTS to strengthen:
🔹 Citizen-centred public services & community policing and Police Customer Service Excellence
🔹 Pastoralist Peacebuilding and conflict transformation
🔹 Digital literacy & AI readiness in Isiolo
🔹 Youth and women’s enterpreneueship, enterprise development & AGPO opportunities
🔹 Citizen–government accountability and responsiveness

From 24–27 August 2026, hundreds of youth, women, elders and PWDs will converge with government, civil society and private-sector actors at Wabera Ward Police Grounds for the UTTS Citizen Engagement & Capacity Building programme.Good governance begins where citizens live. UTTS is taking governance from policy rooms to community spaces, turning participation into capability, capability into opportunity, and opportunity into resilience.
