🌿🍃ASREP Unveils Inaugural Ward-Level Eco-Champs Chapter in Ngaremara Ward, Isiolo

Today, ASREP trained, commissioned, and launched the first Ward-level chapter of the Waso Eco-Champs in Ngaremara Ward, Isiolo County; a powerful movement led by indigenous women and youth stewards, at the frontline of the climate crisis.

Through a participatory climate awareness and capacity-strengthening forum, community members voiced, with urgency and emotion, the deepening climate impacts reshaping their lives:

🐄🌿Dwindling pastoralist wealth and resilience,

🌍💥 Rising inter-communal tensions,

🐘🦏Escalating human-wildlife conflicts, and

🪫🌾Eroding hope for a fair, secure and thriving future.

These lived realities reaffirm ASREP’s mandate: to document, elevate and safeguard indigenous climate knowledge and frontline voices, especially across Kenya’s ASAL landscapes where climate injustice is most severe.

Communities also highlighted a persistent policy blind spot - the overemphasis on grassland and wildlife, while dryland forestry (‘acacia economy’) remains under-prioritized, despite being the backbone of ASAL climate resilience and green-economy pathways, the alternative livelihood gap that should bridge charcoal burning activities and localized RETs (Renewable Energy Transitions).

As part of the action agenda, 2,000 indigenous tree species were planted across the Conservancy site and neighbouring schools, all geo-mapped for joint monitoring with the Ward Chapter, Nakuprat-Gotu Community Conservancy, Kenya Forest Service, County Government of Isiolo, the Office of the MCA, and ASREP.

This milestone forms part of the , targeting 200,000 trees and empowering 2,000 women and youth Eco-Champs across all 10 wards of Isiolo County over the next 12 months. This is poised to rejuvenate critical wildlife habitats and ecosystems.

Local leadership is climate leadership.
Indigenous voices are climate action.
ASREP is committed to ensuring both shape Isiolo’s resilience journey, and inform global climate justice dialogue.

🌱 Scaling ASAL Climate Action: ASREP Leads Isiolo’s Drylands Forestry Revolution

Tropical forests represent 45% of global forest cover, yet Kenya accounts for only 1%, despite its tropical geography.
Within Kenya, the ASAL counties, covering 80% of national land, hold under 40% of Kenya's total tree cover (now at 12.3%: KFS 2024), leaving dryland ecosystems acutely exposed to climate shocks and slowing progress toward national and global restoration targets.

Today ASREP, led by ED Dida Fayo, in a multi-agency partnership with the Isiolo County Commissioner’s Office, Kenya Forest Service, Kenya prison, Nema Kenya, State Department of Housing & Urban Planning, County Government of Isiolo and local community, to plant 1,500 climate-resilient trees at the Kenya Prisons Grounds, in Wabera Ward.

The activity advances ASREP’s flagship “Waso Eco-Champs Project”—a scalable, community-driven initiative targeting 200,000 trees across Isiolo’s 10 wards within 12 months. The project integrates dryland forestry, nature-based solutions, and community monitoring, designed for compatibility with results-based climate finance.

The model directly supports:

🌿Kenya’s NDC LULUCF and adaptation pathways,

🌾AFOLU priorities under the Global Stocktake,

🍀UNCCD dryland restoration targets, and

🪵Continental goals under AFR100.

🌲 Tropical Forests Facility Framework, recently approved at COP30

With 55–60% depressed OND 2025 rainfall projected by KMD and early livestock losses in Wajir and Mandera signaling heightened drought stress, ASAL counties require urgent, climate-aligned investment.

ASREP positions Isiolo as a demonstration hub for scalable dryland restoration, delivering co-benefits in carbon enhancement, ecosystem stability, and community resilience.
