Celebrating Indigenous Communities, Conservation and Freedom

As Kenya marks another Madaraka Day, the Save Beisa Oryx Community (SBOC) joins the nation in celebrating the spirit of self-determination, resilience, and community leadership.

Today, we honor the Indigenous pastoralist communities of Northern Kenya whose knowledge, stewardship, and commitment continue to safeguard some of Kenya's most precious natural heritage.

🦌 Protecting the Endangered Beisa Oryx Across the Isiolo-Samburu-Meru Conservation Areas, pastoralist communities are leading efforts to protect and recover the endangered Beisa Oryx, one of Kenya's most iconic dryland antelopes. Through community conservation, citizen science, ranger patrols, youth ambassadors, and local stewardship, communities are reversing threats posed by habitat loss, climate change, and illegal activities.

🌳 Defending the Acacia-Commiphora Dryland Ecosystems The Acacia-Commiphora ecoregions are the lifeline of Northern Kenya—supporting wildlife, livestock, livelihoods, and climate resilience. Indigenous communities are restoring degraded landscapes, protecting water catchments, reducing deforestation, and promoting sustainable natural resource management for future generations.

🤝 Conservation Through Community Leadership True conservation succeeds when local people are empowered to lead. Through the collective efforts of pastoralist women, youth, elders, community scouts, wildlife rangers, schools, and conservation champions, we are building a future where people and nature thrive together.

KENYA PROGRESS IN FOREST CONSERVATION

Save Beisa Oryx Community-SBOC appreciates and acknowledges the ASSENTING into law of The Forest Conservation and Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025 by His Excellency The President of Kenya Dr William Samoe Ruto.

SBOC will focus in Drylands Acacia Commiphora forests, Woodlands and Shrubs will be a catalyst in the next amendment to ensure incorporation of indigenous Pastoralist drylands acacia commiphora forest ecoregions into the law.

UNDERSTANDING CLIMATE LOSS & DAMAGE IN ISMCA NEEDS NOW

Save Beisa Oryx Community-SBOC team joined a research team from JKUAT to collect opinions and visit project areas affected by Climate change, in Isiolo and Marsabit Conservation Areas.

Climate loss and damages continue to be one of the persistent catalysts to severe impacts of Climate Change in Isiolo-Meru-ASAL-Samburu-Marsabit Conservation Areas.

A meeting with Nakupurat-Gotu Manager and some elders from Attan location, they emphasized in particular flush floods and prolonged drought coupled with insecurity and luck of immediate response to infrastructure repairs and advanced community response capacitation are the outmost apex drivers.

SBOC PASTORALIST MICRO-PLASTIC OBSERVATORY (PMO) is an Indigenous-Led Environmental Intelligence System for Monitoring Plastic Pollution Across Dryland Ecosystems.

PMO operates as a distributed environmental monitoring platform, tracking the movement of plastics from terrestrial ecosystems to freshwater and marine environments.
